October 16, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

A portion of an IGN Minute with Nintendo's Denise Kaigler...

IGN: We're liking the new Nintendo Channel. The weekly show is a great idea. What other types of updates are you planning for the Wii experience this year and beyond?

Denise Kaigler: We're really happy that our fans seem to be so positive about the updates to the Nintendo Channel and the new Nintendo Week show. As the show develops, viewers can expect Nintendo Week to be a source of exclusive game announcements and special guest appearances by game developers and celebrities. Of course, we're all about providing our fans with surprises, so here's a tease for you: We're working on a little surprise for those who connect their Wii to the Internet, so keep your eye on the Nintendo Channel for that announcement to come in the near future.

Hmmm...wonder what that one could be. Perhaps a new Channel to keep an eye out for? Thanks to RCMadiax for the heads up!

A firmware update that actually provides all the Wii features and enhancements we've wanted for 3 years. ;)

Actually, I wonder if it's a Nintendo Channel update with a Wii Download Service (same as DS Download Service) to download Wii game demos. Naw... that's expecting too much.

I sure do hope it's a new Wii channel. I've been waiting for one of those for a while. I'd expect an announcement to be made sometime in December or early next year.

I think they mean announcing a game in that weekly show.

I don't think It'll be a great surprise for me. Definitely not if an update is involved or needed for it. I don't even have the Nintendo Channel anymore.

When is Denise gonna answer more of our question?

Europe didn't even get the new Nintendo Channel yet, and the Dutch digest video hasn't been updated since the channel was released.
Consistency first, Nintendo, then you can focus on new things...

Oooh, what? what? what? *prances around like a curious meerkat*

It's probably nothing to get worked up about, isn't it? Like maybe they're giving devs an extra 640KB to work with for WiiWare games...

*sigh*

I've given up hope of Europe getting the new Nintendo channel. Looks like I'll stick to using homebrew to find out how long I play my games (irony is the homebrew method is probably more accurate anyway)
@martijn2
Consider yourselves lucky. this is the trash the UK gets:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTMtznKUeJo
Oh well at least some of that is gif worthy.

That said, I'm willing to bet it'll be North America finally getting the Today and Tomorrow channel much to the angers of Christians...

[I've never seen the need for keeping the Nintendo Channel since, like, I'm on here everyday]?

I think it's just the prize system, that you help other people to connect their wii online and receive prizes for this, like VC's games. I think that it's out just in Europe, not in NA yet.

Nothing new but cool to finally have a US confirmation.

I highly doubt this is anything special. Probably a Wii version of Pictochat or something.

I have absolutely no faith in anything Denise Kaigler talks about as having any bearing on the type of games that interest me.

You know what would be neat? A revamped Mii channel that would work with future games. It would be separate from the original Mii channel to ensure compatibility with past titles, but you could import your old Miis from there and make new ones with expanded customization options (we need real mohawks to use on Mr. T, and more hair colors for various anime and game characters).

Wii demos would definitly make me happy.
I dont have high hopes of that happening, but maybe just maybe, Nintendo will take advantage of the SD card slot like they should. Seriously, everything that you guys have listed is possible with the SDHC capacity/accessibility that Nintendo has opened up to the devs (Guitar Hero 5). They just need to take advantage of it themselves.

Movie download channel?

Wii Shop Channel x10? Meaning we can download demos for games. Also trade in our Wiiware mistakes for some points?

It better be something good.

Hmm... this could be anything.

- A worldwide release of the video channel that is in Japan.

- Universal Friend Codes

- Friends list

- The ability for developers to patch/fix their broken games

- A new Wii Channel (most likely)

- A redesigned Wii Menu

- Support for external hard drives

Make it Pizza Hut instead and I'm in.

As much as I'd love achievements on Wii, Miyamoto had a good point -- Nintendo tries to focus on encouraging players to play games for the sake of PLAYING them and having fun, not to build up an artificial e-penis.

OK, he didn't phrase it like that but you get the picture.
