Heh heh heh, short sweet and to the point. Better than the intro to the last NSMB, I'll admit.
Needed something like this after being creeped out by Uboa... (if you don't know who Uboa is or what "it's" from then I'm not going to stifle your obvious curiosity to go check, but geez it's surprising how something so simple looking also looks so damn creepy...)
@TheSuperMario
Wasn't Mega Mushromm just a replacement for the Starman? Correct me if I'm wrong (it's been a few months since playing NSMB) but wasn't the Starman not in the game, with Mega Mushroom acting as a replacement?
Anyway, Starman is in the game.

Has Morton always been that big!? Maybe after watching the cartoon comparing Big Mouth size to the others. Has confuse me! Either way with his color and size he really stands out now.

At least no one in the Mushroom Kingdom can be faulted for being so defensively weak this time around. They used the good ol' trusty Trojan Horse technique.

Love it! More videogames should have stories like this, imo. It really fits what I think a "videogame" story should be like.
October 16, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Honestly a story like this is more fun than most stories in games.
I love it.
I love it.

@TheSuperMario
Ah I see then. Well my only guess as to the lack of the Mega Mushroom is because of the co-op. If one person went giant then how would everyone else keep up without the side of the screen possibly killing them once it reaches it's limit? (I think I heard that's how it works for those who lag behind.)
Well I get to have Mario in a penguin suit. All is right with the world. (penguins = cutest birds ever, just a little above ducks, and I'm not just saying that because of the current penguin craze [actually, has that craze died down yet? I know after "March of the Penguins" there were suddenly even more penguin focused movies the following years, but I haven't seen anything recently on penguins in the media].)

I refuse to watch..
I have no problem with watching some gameplay footage but this is stepping into spoilers territory.

Isn't this why you can't play as Princess Peach? Not because of the 'dress-physics'?

Me is not watching, but I look forward to seeing this and much of the game for the first time when I play it. =)

We really should have gotten Geno and Mallow as PCs instead of two generic Toads.
October 16, 2009 at 10:55 pm
@icedrake523
Geno and Mallow are not canon Mario characters.
I don't understand people's obsession with SMRPG characters. The game really pales in comparison to Paper Mario (mostly) and especially to M&L series on handhelds.
A better bet for NPC would have been Rosalina or a Pianta from Sunshine. Oh well.

Love it, simple, cute, to the point...Exactly what a straight-up platforming Mario game needs.

I was just playin some super mario 3...and realized that nsmbwii really needs a level with kuribo's shoe...imageine 4 of those bouncin around stombin on spinies and such...too good.

@bunny-cow
Even worse is that the Doomship is in PLAIN SIGHT outside the castle.
No wonder Mario and Luigi have a job.
@icedrake523
1. Because Mallow and Geno are overrated non-canon Mario characters that most hopeful emo wank sue-fic writing fans cream their pants over too many times creating situations where Geno or Mallow do some DBZ-crap that could never be done in their respective games.
2. Toad hasn't had a playable role in a Mario ACTION title (anyone who contradicts me saying the Kart or Party titles will get smacked in the jaw for their lack of reading) since SMB2USA and every port and/or remake of it.
3. Even if the Toads feel generic, it shows that some of the Toad are actually worth their salt as Mushroom Guards to go on adventures with Mario
@Burgers
Thank you that was awesome. I thought I was the only one that felt the SMRPG character were overrated as all hell.
However that isn't to say I wouldn't mind seeing them in another game but it would have to be a Square-Enix collaboration mixing the Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy engine with RPG elements.

Really awesome intro actually. Can't wait for November for what has quickly become my most anticipated game.
Personally I didn't really care for the Mega Mushroom, it was kind of cool being all Godzilla-like but it took away a bit of the Mario platforming charm in my eyes. And don't even get me started on the Mini Mushroom. Making you weaker and forcing you to pick it up just to get to secret areas.
As far as powerups go, NSMBWii seems to easily outdo the DS game (which really isn't that hard of a thing in my eyes).
@boxter432
Oh my god would that be amazing!

A pretty damn good intro in my opinion, even if I think the production values could have been better.
The whole attraction of 2D Mario is the sheer simplicity of it, and this nonsense fits it perfectly.

I don't know what gets me more excited in this game. The 2D graphics with awesome backgrounds, the overworld, the visual effects, the fluidity of ennemies animation ? Or maybe the fact that I suppose there will be a lot of hidden stuff like Super Mario World. Videos don't really tell if a game is linear or not. Anyway, can't wait to play it !

this is confusing.

it also explains alot more in terms of how the hell those items get there.
im still waiting for the official MMO mob loot explanation

I support this claim.
Also, I am glad this comes out around my birthday/Thanksgiving.
I'll have at least 2 other people (if not 3) to play it with on both my birthday (my house) and Thanksgiving (my girlfriend's).

As @Burgers and @DeAngelo Guillory pointed out, those characters aren't part of Mario canon since Square has full ownership over them. If they ever returned it'd be in the form of another Nintendo/Square collaboration (which COULD happen again since Nintendo is interested in doing more collaborations like the current Team Ninja collab on Metroid: Other M).
Plus... even though I do like what I've played so far of SMRPG, I've gotta admit I think the original characters in the game (Geno in particular) are about as overrated as Cloud and Sephiroth. I have nothing against FF7 (I DO intend on getting it for Christmas this year so I can finally see what the big deal is), but Cloud and Sephiroth don't come off as feeling like they deserve more praise than, say, Cecil or Kefka.

@Eternal Rain
You're talking about characters that do have a huge fan base behind them. The same with Mario, Link, Gordon Freeman, Kratos and so on..
People that say this or that character/game is overrrated are people who probably weren't around when they were at their prime or simply didn't connect at the same level their fans did.
From your post I see that you started to play SMRPG recently so you most likely won't see and percieve the game in the same way I or many of the people who played it back then because you've played many games that came after it.
I see that you haven't played FFVII yet neither so it's easy for you to say that Cloud or Sephiroth are overrated, first because you haven't played the game and secondly because the characters and their attitude were based on what was percieved to be appealing to some cultures on that time and are now viewed differently.
That's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but the fact is that all of this games and characters do have people who still like them for what they represented or meant to them and that's undeniable.
Also, I still won't watch the intro.

Geno and Mallow are a helluva lot more interesting than two Toads which aren't even the red Toad with blue coat like we get in the Mario Kart games.
I prefer Super Mario RPG over the Mario & Luigi series.

I guess that's okay, you can prefer it, but you should also realize M&L:BiS is pretty much the best Mario RPG ever made (having played it all the way through, I fully know this) and reviews seem to support this.
It's just so much more active than SMRPG was. I could never go back and have fun with the generic RPG SMRPG battles after hopping, bopping, countering and doing all kinds of things at once in the battle system in the M&L series.
But, to each his own.

Hmm, point taken. Yeah I GUESS I could say the same about Gordon Freeman... and I've played all of the Half-Life games! "What's so special about him? He NEVER says anything! He has ZERO personality, I don't see why the hell people like this guy so much when his only claim to fame is beating stuff to death with a crowbar." That's not my opinion, but I can see that as the opinion from someone who's only heard about Half-Life (or seen videos) and never played them. Maybe I'll just keep my "things I think are overrated" comments to myself from now on since I can change my mind after seeing the characters in action. Who knows, maybe once I finally get to Geno in SMRPG I'll be like "oh NOW I see what the big deal about him is... Geno for next Smash Bros. plz!" (but of course I'm only giving a "possible situation").
Getting back on topic: this game will rock my socks.

Do yourself a favor and ask for an other game. FF7 is a mess. I know... it's a bad thing to say, but believe me there better ways to spend your Christmas then with that game.

I should have added that if I'm lucky I'll get FF8 and 9 as well.
FF7 may be 12 years old and the graphics haven't aged well, but I'm just hoping I'll enjoy the story and gameplay. I've got other RPGs to play just in case I find FF7 to be underwhelming (like "Golden Sun" and "Mario and Luigi").

Like you said, the graphics haven't aged well but that's about the only thing that you'll problems with if you keep an open mind.
The gameplay is turn based something that games like Mario&Luigi:BIS and Paper Mario have so if you didn't have a problem with them you'll be just fine with FFVII.
Storywise is not something out of this world but it can be interesting if you follow through.
And I think that the fact that there has been so much talk about people wanting a remake of it says good things about this game.
I have been playing FFIX on my PS3 recently and it still is a very good game.. I also plan on getting FFVIII again because I lost my original game somehow a while back and I've been wanting to take another look at it

This game is going to be amazing. I just wish it had better music (hell, just reuse some Galaxy tracks, I wouldn't mind) and more playable characters.

@Facepalm
I hear ya. I wish Nintendo would create unique story lines for every new Mario game and not just recycle every the kidnapping bit. I had an idea about a darker Mario where he dies and goes from Mushroom kingdom to The Death Kingdom and use a halo as a weapon. It would be dark. Maybe Mario ain't supposed to be dark in the same way that Superman is supposed to be light.

Just do that from now on. Oh and Square owns Mallow and Geno so their canon-osity (hell if I know the right word to use here) is constantly brought into question. Yeah Geno has a cameo in the first "Mario and Luigi," but it clearly says in the credits "Geno is copyright Square-Enix."

i admit that i myself never played the game (i loathe rpgs for the most part) but it reminds me of FF7, it is entirely too much credit, and your opinions are most certainly clouded by nostalgia
again, never played it, but it gets a level of love rivaling FF7, and considering who made it, i cant help but feel like they are both overrated for the same reasons.
@Eternal Rain
well think about it like this:
if starfox adventures is developed by rare, and the character krystal was created by rare, but she belongs to nintendo, and has since been included in the canon
where does that leave others like her?
i suppose rare never owned krystal, but if they had, would that mean that adventures never happened?

Geno and Mallow are okay characters, I think just having them in one game makes some people go crazy. You know, they wanna hang with there pals Geno and Mallow in a NEW game. I dunno, Mallow was weak in the game and Geno just had some arm cannons. Are they on the final "Dream" team tho? nope, Smithy only fights Mario, Peace and Koopa hehhheh.
As for FF7, the game gained a lot of hype because it was an introduction to RPGs for most gamers. Remember, The PSX saw a new batch of gamers born when it was released, so games like FF7 are the first RPGs some gamers played. Making that title the end all be all of RPGs.
In reality Final Fantasy 7 just ho hum (Ya gatta omit any review that praises it based on the name and not the gameplay), I prefer 6 myself but thats just me. And yes, Ive finished 7, beaten the weapons and found most secrets (I mainly just do the ultimate weapons, Knights of the Round) and I still dont think its worth its stink.
Zelda OoT is the same thing, Great game, but godlike for those who started with it or climbed the hype train.

I would't say nostalgia more like facts... If you remember FFVII was graded as one best games/RPGs of all times back then (that is compared to RPGs of that era). And there are still some gamesites that consider it to be.
I'm not saying that it's still the best RPG of all, there are far better RPGs that came after it, but the game does deserve credit.
Like I said before.. If you didn't play the game back then I don't think you can make a clear case of your view of it (not saying that your opinion don't matter or that you are wrong, we just have different views)

@Atariadam
interesting, so more than just nostalgia may contribute to its popularity.
as for me, until CC, the last FF game i thought was even halfway decent was 4, almost entirely on that first story twist, just because i love a little non conformity in my stories
but i have question the OoT thing, considering that zelda STILL doesnt have the kind of insane retarded brand as FF.
i mean yea, zelda is a household thing, but look at FF, people started crying at e3 (twilight princess style) when they saw a new FF game trailer, and all the trailer was was a bunch of random, unconnected, and pretty damn boring cgi videos of people riding chocobos
the TP freakout was because it was adult link again after a great number of years.
the FF freakout happened even though there are still 4 freaking FF games coming out in the same damn timeframe,
@NeroSuferoth
to be clear, ive played ff7, not mario rpg, but from my experience with square, those jackasses have no difference between their games that isnt cosmetic
interesting, so more than just nostalgia may contribute to its popularity.

the FF freakout happened even though there are still 4 freaking FF games coming out in the same damn timeframe,
@NeroSuferoth
to be clear, ive played ff7, not mario rpg, but from my experience with square, those jackasses have no difference between their games that isnt cosmetic

Haha, short and sweet. Can't wait for the game. Better start saving up for it.

Wish I would've been invited back to the party again. Tri-clyde, Mouser, and myself have been dying to get back into the action.

Why does Bowser continue to kidnap the princess? And this game needs online...

@Eternal Rain
Well hell I can tell you why Gordon Freeman rocks.
How often do you have a game hero that looks like an AWESOME teacher?
@Nuffsaid
You know experience varies on the person. It's very much possible to like the game everyone hates and hate the game everyone likes.
In short no matter what reviews a game has the only way you can be certain is by playing the game yourself.
@hcig
"well think about it like this:
if starfox adventures is developed by rare, and the character krystal was created by rare, but she belongs to nintendo, and has since been included in the canon
where does that leave others like her?
i suppose rare never owned krystal, but if they had, would that mean that adventures never happened?"
The difference is that RARE did "Work for Hire". Krystal and all of the extra Kongs became Nintendo property because they were meant to be supplementary to the franchises they appeared in. This is why you see Tiny, Dixie, Lanky and Candy in other games.
It's the same reasoning why Sega is able to control Gunster and Guardian Heroes. Treasure made them but only Sega can say if they can make another.
This is different from Banjo and Conker because they were developed as separate properties from the beginning thus their appearance in Diddy Kong Racing does NOT make them DK characters.
Nice try trying to poke a hole in the logic of Geno not belonging to Nintendo but you forget that I come here to argue technicalities.
"as for me, until CC, the last FF game i thought was even halfway decent was 4, almost entirely on that first story twist, just because i love a little non conformity in my stories

To be fair there was still machinery (and in some cases space travel) in FFIV and FFVI as well so if anyone says "OMG FFVII RUINED EVERYTHING WITH TECHNOLOGY" they forget the above games and really Midgar was the only place that looked like a city.
Not much other places were all that developed (if you can call it that).
You shouldn't fault the ENTIRE Final Fantasy series just because Nomura's vision of Final Fantasy is a BIT more cynical, anachronistic (FF8 and FFX) and feels more sci-fi from the rest (FFXIII). That just shows how he climbed the ladder to become an influence on the industry and players.

From what I've gathered, Geno is mostly only liked because his attacks looked cool and what he was, and not that he was actually that great of a character. Granted, I don't like SMRPG, and just because people played it when it came out, doesn't mean that makes everything okay because it was then. That's precisely why it IS nostalgia.
I've played FF7 and I still don't see why Cloud or Sephiroth are cool. They are both unoriginal archetypes that were recycled from SNES Square games, they have huge swords, which apparently makes them badass, and Sephiroth is a bishounen. Cloud is a terribly boring character, ESPECIALLY after beating the game and finding out the truth about what happened. Fangirls thinking characters are hot and that being a primary basis for their popularity certainly means nothing to me.
FF7 was a great game, and it definitely changed things when it was released, but Square really has nowhere to go from there. They've been reusing almost everything since then.
@hcig
I agree with the last part, but FF9 doesn't follow that mold.
And most pre-FF7 FF games have a different mold they follow, and almost all of the spin-offs are different from the normal FF mold.
Also, they cared about FF13 (or 14, I forget) because it was an actual numbered game again. Not a sequel, remake, prequel or spin-off, which is what they have been pumping out non-stop.
FF12 came out in 2006, and before that, they had a fake game, and I don't remember if people really liked 12.
HOWEVAH...
Zelda fans can get just as bat-s*** crazy as FF fans. Trust me.

@topic of nostalgia/overratedness:
I grew up playing Ocarina of Time from launch, and I played it on N64 and both Gamecube discs and I've played it every possible way you could play the game, 100% each time.
I loved that game.
But I don't think it's the best Zelda, and it was my 4th Zelda title. Do I think it deserves recognition for changing the way a lot of 3D games are now? Yes. Just like FF7 does.
But to say it's the best game, best Nintendo game, best Zelda or best N64 title? I feel as though those are totally incorrect titles for OoT.
Even worse are those that think Twilight Princess fits any of those categories (subbing N64 with Wii/Gamecube). TP is a hell of a lot more overrated by some fanboys than OoT is.

@MoldyClay
The thing is that SMRPG was highly graded back then also.. If it were just some average game I could agree with you, but both games were praised by gamers and gamereviwers.
