I look at that cover, and I struggle to figure out what the hell is going on. Who are some of those characters? What kind of craziness is going on here?
While I'm not in-the-know, there are thousands of people that are. The Sonic comic book series is running 200 issues strong, and continues to perform quite well. There are plenty of dedicated readers out there, and it seems like the comic series has been handling things much better than the game line that it's based off of. Perhaps the games need to take some cues from their comic companions.
Story Feedback
I got into it a little when I was twelve, but stopped because the comic wasn't conveniently available. Anyway, it was pretty darn cool, and I'd love it if a game was set in that universe.

I haven't read the comics since it became angst teen drama. Since then I haven't touched the comics, perhaps I'll swing by my comic shop to see how it's going.

Those are all characters from the Sonic SATam show. Great show by the way.
I see the comic at Borders all the time.
I never get it because I feel like I need to read all of them and there are too many right now.
And no, the games shouldn't be like the comics. If people complain about the 20+ reoccurring furries we have NOW, they'll be up in arms on the amount in the comics.

Underneath Sonic's hand is Lien-Da, sub-leader of the Dark Legion [the minions around her].
The big nosed guy is Snively [Robotnik's nephew].
The octopus head-in-a-jar is Dimitri [actual leader of the Dark Legion] and the shadowy figure in the back is the Iron Queen [technomage, once filler villain now a main one, who is ruling in Robotnik's place for the time being].

I actually recognize most of the characters here, they're from the old Sat AM cartoon. Awesome sauce.

The comics are amazing. The games really need to take a cue from the comics in being able to be serious in a way that also allows people to take you seriously.
The comics can exist on their own, but no way in hell do the games need to become like them. The games suffer from simple things that the comics actually had long before the games. But the difference is that it works for comics and not for games. Sonic games simply need to forget anything made after 2001. In fact, forget anything made after 1995. Go back to classic speed and level design, nothing else. Only Sonic. No gimmicks, and very little story. It was amazing how much character development they managed to put in S&K with Knuckles. He didn't talk, just made hand gestures. That's all we needed.

With Fleetway's UK Sonic comic being stopped at #184 in the late 90s, I was so happy that I got to get into the Archie Sonic universe [subbing it and SU through eBay of all things].
It's great stuff.
