October 22, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii

Check out this blurb from NewTeeVee, which summarizes some information from a Netflix conference call concerning their recent earnings report.

Particularly enticing was the news dropped during the call that Netflix would be partnering with another CE device later this year with a “material installed base,” big enough that the company revised its fourth quarter guidance upwards. Earlier in the call, Hastings mentioned that more CE companies want to include Netflix service and he specifically said “game consoles.”

Well, that means we can infer that either the Wii, PS3, PSP or DS is going to get the service. Of course, we can take things further and say that the term 'console' only refers to PS3 or Wii. Could we soon see a deal with Nintendo for a Netflix service on Wii?

I get the feeling that 'game consoles' was referring to the whole spectrum and just to, well, the consoles here for some reason, so I think this will end up being a PSP deal [goodness knows the PSP Go needs some gimmick to sell its carcass now].

That TV/Movie channel of Nintendo's in Japan [supposedly coming west before the year 3000...] doesn't scream Nintendo as needing a pick me up [in that department] to me. Why pay extra fees when they can do it themselves?

And alot of Nintendo fans would dismiss a Wii + Netflix shindig because it isn't compatible in HD anyway.

Wouldn't mind it on Wii. But how can they do HD?

I have a feeling it will be for something BUT the Wii. And the DS? No chance.

The DS? How in the hell would that happen?

I can see it possibly going on the PSP or PS3... but Sony already offers downloadable movies and TV shows on the PSN.

The Wii is the strongest possibility. Let's hope Nintendo can come to an agreement.

Meh to netflix. Reason I say that is because it put alot of movie / game rental stores out of business. Which is odd considering the service is a pretty stupid idea.

Why not be on the DS? You can view video on every other portable device in the market.

Well. The install base part of the quote would make it seem likely For The Wii, but we'll see.

Could the Wii even do this?

Also, surprised RMC didn't pull the "OH MAN, MAYBE I'LL JOIN IF IT GETS ON WII" which just shows blatant fanboy because there's no reason to not get it on 360 (which he has) if you have intent to get it on Wii, which would have worse quality.

@Perfect_Chaos

DS isn't every other portable. It doesn't even have Youtube, which at least the Wii web browser can do.

@WiiFolder

How is the service silly?

Our plan has it so we get 2 films at a time and can send them back and get new ones almost immediately for one price instead of a price each time we rent a film. It's a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of movies we may not like and renting them individually.

And I can watch them online or on the 360 for free.

HOWEVER, the online selection is very lacking. The amount of times I found a movie and was like "OH MAN, DO WANT" and then saw I can't watch it online was upsetting.

I personally think Redbox did A LOT more damage to rental stores. It's more accessible and the kiosks are in almost every McDonald's and Wally World. Being available in those two alone ensured Redbox to become a BIG success. Plus at $1 per night, it's hard to pass up.

@wiifolder

what planet are you on pal?

i'm getting so lazy that waddling out to the mail box is starting to become too much work, much less going to a crappy store, picking out a set number of movies, being forced to watch all the set number of movies within a set number of days, or there will be a late fee...watch what you will, when you will, it's a novel idea.

and i don't think that the DS has the gumption to handle something like netflix...besides who would want to watch a 2 hour movie on those BS screens of the DS? even the psp screen would be pushing it for me.

not sure i'd want to watch movies on the wii either, most people today don't want their movies looking like crap, i mean i guess wii owners are used to that by now, but i'm not seeing it being the best way to watch a movie, even if it does happen.

if anything ps3 will be doing it for sure. the ps3 and 360 are set up to do this type of stuff, where for the wii/ds it's either secondary, or not even in the ball park.

Yes, the 360 and PS3 are both built for online heavy functions like this. The Wii can't even compute and it would have to buffer far too much. Well said.

I dunno if you could tell, but the GIF was supposed to show he was laughing at the idea.

We all know it's not going to Wii, and if it does, it will be a flop.

Odd, there's a few issues with this.

1.) Microsoft just got an exclusivity deal with them if i'm not mistaken (maybe that exclusivity is for HD content)

2.) All you people saying it's not for Wii because Wii cant handle it are just not thinking properly. Have you not watched streamed content on your Wii yet? It's right there, on the Nintendo Channel, in 480p glory. Yeah it buffers like s***, but Netflix has excellent servers. Youtube vids and others buffer with the speed of a Kenyan. The real issue is if Nintendo wants Netflix or their own service which is available only in Japan, currently.

3.) PS3? Let me try to understand this:

Netflix: Hey Sony?

Sony: Yeah Netflix?

Netflix: Hey, can we provide streaming HD movies on your BLURAY PLAYER?

Sony: Yeah, why not! It's not like we're trying to Trojan Horse our own physical movie format with our console in to homes and cover both bases, we'd love to have medialess movies available on our console for no extra fee and make people avoid buying Bluray.

Netflix: KTHX

I agree with the lazyfatbum (sorry, can I call you that?!).

In terms of the Wii streaming higher quality video than it currently manages on YouTube, the Nintendo Channel often has very nice looking video running fullscreen (running youtube fullscreen causes choppy frames for me, same for Orb). As for whether it'd be possible for Netflix to deliver a good service, I wouldn't be able to comment as I live in the UK. However, before the end of this year (supposedly) we should be getting a BBC iPlayer Channel, which should at least give some indication of what the Wii's capable of.

I wouldn't say the PS3 is a definite "NO" but it's certainly not a clear 'YES' by any means, for all the reasons mentioned thus far.

My mom has the netflix roku box and it sucks all you can get on that are childrens shows, old movies, bad stand-up, movie flops, and South Park Seasons. My mom also has the 4 movie out plan and it is so much better even though there is hardly worth watching nowadays.

Wii can handle Netflix. In the past Netflix has already proposed this with a disc that would be mailed and billed to you as a one time fee and every time you would watch a movie, you would put the blank disc in so that the disc would be taking the brunt of the ram usage. Its very possible and you would have DVD quality image.

You do realize that Sony offers HD video content on the PSN right?

The have thousands of TV shows and movies you can download to your PS3 or PSP. So obviously Sony is into digital distribution as well. Not just Microsoft.

Not that anyone will read this, but Netflix was announced for PS3. I know, I thought it would come to DS too...
