"The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked. The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years." - DFC analyst David Cole

I think it's a little strange to hear how the DS has peaked, when you look at just how well the system is still doing all around the world. Perhaps I'm just blinded by the Nintendo side of things, but I wouldn't call this point in the DS' life it's peak.

Also worth noting, the DFC surveyed 8,000 game players in North America and Europe about their mobile gaming habits. Turns out that 29% of people surveyed own a DS.

He could be right. We're far into the DS and PSP's lifetimes, but with Nintendo's marketing and the still young DSi as well as Sony's just released PSP... I could easily see him being wrong too.

I'd agree with his statement. "Peaked" doesn't mean that the DS will have a smaller install base, it just means that it probably won't sell more on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis than it has over the past few years.

I don't think a redesign will do it. It's gonna take the successor to the DS to actually improve upon the phenomenal sales that it's had since launch.

Nintendo needs a new system seller to spark sales again. It's a crime that there hasn't been a must have DSi exclusive game.

Oh boy, another pathetic Technocrati analyst is quacking about the same crap they've always quacked about. I'm quite positive there were analysis claims that the DS has peaked for a couple years now, and look at that, the DSi is selling faster than the Lite did even WITHOUT system sellers.

Why do we keep giving attention to these hacks who have been wrong for YEARS now. YEARS. Analysts are the most useless, ignorant, dense people in the entirety of gaming, and considering the state gaming is in that's saying a LOT.

edit: In fact, let's let the quacking heads speak for themselves!

"Casual gaming growth has been the primary driver for the industry over the last three years, the key player being the Nintendo DS. We believe DS hardware demand has now peaked globally.

-Hiroshi Kamide from KBC Securities, 06/17/08"

DSis should come "bundled" with certain DSiWare titles, that would be interesting, like a "Minis March Again" DSi with a "Minis" logo on it that is the same price as a regular DSi, or something along those lines. Wouldn't burn us early adopters either, since we got the 1000 points.

If you look at the PS2, which is STILL selling at 140 million units, I think the DS has a long life ahead of it.

And the PSP isn't even close to where the DS is in terms of sales. The PSP has much room for growth.

well a peak is only as high as the number of games...games on the ds has slowed some. there are only 2 really big name games for it right now and they are both remake games, the rest of the stuff is pretty much ho-hum at best.

psp has moments of awesome, only to be kicked in the teeth by the tool that is sony. sony has not handled the psp well at all. it's a wonder it even sells, i mean with how they handled it overall, and now with go....
