I can't help but feel a bit sad when putting together a list of top 10 Cube games with our friends over at GameDaily. The poor GameCube never received the respect it deserved. The worst part is, I can understand why gamers kept their distance. For a large majority of the platform's life, there just wasn't much to see in the way of third party support. Nintendo fans love their first-party games, but we were all feeling the pain of the Cube software drought. I can't think of any other time in my gaming life where I was literally waiting months for a single new title to come out.
That means that any Cube list is going to end up being dominated by Nintendo software. That's not to say that previous lists didn't have a sprinkling of Nintendo games on them, but the Cube only barely survived because of Nintendo's offerings. With that said, it's funny to see that the Cube tried such radically different ideas with their core franchises on the Cube. I guess they figured that they might as well experiment now so they could get things even better for the next console!
Number 10 - Pikmin 2
I fell in love with the original Pikmin, a franchise that was birthed on the GameCube. We were all excited to see this brand-new idea from Shigeru Miyamoto, the mastermind behind so many of Nintendo's beloved franchises. We were all a bit nervous when we heard that the original game was inspired by Miyamoto's gardening habits, but those fears melted away once we got to jump into Olimar's world.
While the original was a fantastic outing, it was the sequel that really got things right. One of the greatest things Pikmin had going for it was the fun of exploring a new world. Too bad there was a timer to count down your fun-time. Thankfully, the sequel did away with the timer, which completely opened up the exploration elements from the first game. You could enjoy the music, build your Pikmin army, and wander the landscape at your own pace. This all came together into one of the most serene experiences the Cube had to offer.
Number 9 - Mario Kart: Double Dash
As I was saying above, Nintendo was trying some different things with their franchises. Mario Kart 64 was wildly successful, and Nintendo decided to build upon that idea for their next console outing. This time around we were going to have not one, but two characters in each kart. This gameplay mechanic lent itself to an even crazier feeling while driving. Holding items, switching drivers, and picking the best paired-up kart made for quite the unique kart experience.
Truth be told, I wasn't too happy with Mario Kart: Double Dash at first. I remember the first wave of reviews that were less than stellar. Still, I decided to give the game a shot. I went from being slightly let down to becoming absolutely addicted. Once you accepted what the game was doing, you could really get into the whole vibe. To this very day, we have a few staffers that call Double Dash the finest entry, as far as console Mario Kart titles are concerned.
Number 8 - F-Zero GX
This is my favorite F-Zero game, hands down. In my opinion, there has never been another entry in the series that really captured the speed that F-Zero was always supposed to be about. I remember sitting down for my first play to be blown away by the title. Not only did the soundtrack kick and the graphics pop, but the gameplay was extremely satisfying. This was futuristic racing at its best.
The best part is, this game was a combination of work from Nintendo and SEGA! Who knew that the two could team up and make such a fantastic F-Zero experience. Too bad Miyamoto thought the game was a dud. As far as we know, SEGA will never work on the F-Zero franchise again. I consider that a real shame, because this outing is the king of F-Zero racing. I think I'll go pop in my copy right now...
Number 7 - Soul Calibur 2
I'm not really into fighting games, but I was at my local GameStop on day-one to pick up a copy of Soul Calibur 2. Why was I so excited to have this game? Well, Namco saw fit to add in Link as a playable character in the Cube version. I'll fully admit that my Nintendo whore attitude convinced me to pick up this game. While Link was definitely the icing on the cake, the game itself is still one of the greatest fighters of that generation.
While the Cube had trouble with third parties, gamers spoke loud and clear with Soul Calibur 2. Fans were definitely ready to play as Link in their favorite fighting franchise, as this version of Soul Calibur 2 turned out to be the best-selling entry. That says a lot in a time when the PS2 and Xbox were thrashing Nintendo. It just goes to show that the perfect pairing of characters can make an already outstanding franchise that much better.
Number 6 - Super Mario Sunshine
For the life of me, I cannot understand why people dislike Super Mario Sunshine so much. I can see where people are coming from with their distaste of F.L.U.D.D. as a talking character, but after you strip away that small portion of the game, I think the rest is absolutely terrific. Using F.L.U.D.D. to soar to new platforming heights in a tropical-setting Mario title was like a vacation dream come true.
Playing Super Mario Sunshine actually makes me feel liek I'm going on vacation. The bright colors, warm setting and lovely locations have me ready to pop on my swim trunks and head to the beach. While the main levels were all a blast to play, it was the challenge rooms that really took things to another level. I think this is the real reason people were upset with Super Mario Sunshine. The challenge levels were sans-F.L.U.D.D., and they were arguably some of the most challenging and unique ideas in any Mario game!
Story Feedback
EDIT: Not a bad list over-all. I wouldn't have Wind Waker as number 1 and Melee is too low.
I agree with #1. Wind Waker is freaking awesome.
why? its one of the greatest racing games ever made. actually THE greatest.
anyways, I agree mostly of what games are on there, but not in that order. for me its:
1 Metroid Prime
2 Resident Evil 4
3 Super Smash Bros Melee
4 Zelda Wind Waker
5 Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
6 F-zero GX
7 Viewtiful Joe (WHERE THE F IS THIS???)
8 Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
9 Resident Evil (REmake)
10 Super Mario Sunshine
THAT is how SEGA and Nintendo produce a quality game together. Not this Sonic and Mario at the Olympics stuff.
Wind Waker at #1 is awesome though! TP was also a Gamecube title, don't forget.
fzero should at least beat out soul caliber, but thats just because fzero had one of the greatest racing game of all time, OF ALL TIME
as for your sadness about the gamecube, i blame the redneaks of gaming, the ps2 had been the 360 of this gen (it was out first, so it was the original next gen, most people already got one) and pc fanboys shat brix over the xbox, though ultimately, the xbox sucked, and hard, but still, it was seeing more love from 3rd parties than the gamecube, who was first shunned for being purple (seriously? thats a reason not to play?) the system was an offset cube with a handle, so it was a lunchbox (again, seriously?) the controller looked like it was made by mattel (one last time, seriously? if all the buttons were grey, they wouldnt say the same thing) and ultimately, the "hardcore" had dismissed everything nintendo ever did for them, because now they were big kids, and they needed tits and blood, and goombas were mushrooms and peach has no nipples.
unless you can figure out why its so easy to port wii to ps2 but not ps2 to gamecube
Wind Waker is way too high though Resident Evil 4 deserves to be above it IMO it was a very special game.
Fro~
PS: It does seem like a pretty great list to me, although I haven't played RE4 for a long enough time to really give my impressions, after watching the game and all that good stuff, it's totally deserving of a spot! Although my personal number one would have to be Melee. I put down so many hours into that game it's not even funny. xD
Never played Pikmin 2, but after seeing that picture of the Duracell battery makes me wonder if we're seeing an Earthbound legal situation in the works... or maybe they are waiting closer for a date on Pikmin 3 to be released to finally bring out the sequel.
@Freddy Fro
I skipped the PSOne/N64 generation and almost skipped the last generation until I played Melee in 04 or 05. Such a simple, yet wholly entertaining game, I bought a GC because of it, and bought a Wii because of Brawl.
Also I've enjoyed Pikmin 1 more than Pikmin 2... but I guess I'm weird.
Hmm, well Europe's already got it, but then again I guess the European laws on product placement royalties are different, and plus the Euro version featured some different products that'd be recognizable to Europeans. Guess it wouldn't be too far fetched if Nintendo of America was forced to alter graphics in the NPC! release in NA because whatever contracts they made with Duracell, Kiwi brand shoe polish, or Chapstick brand chapstick may have expired.
even though i wish it was a different story, nobody does games better than the big n. also, f zero on cube is probably the hardest game i've ever played. that, along with the great visuals and awesome tracks, make it one of the games i will never forget. please make another one, cause mariokart wii just doesn't do it for me.
I hope you already bought Little King's story? As much as I wanted Pikmin 2 after finishing the first one on my cube and it not being available anywhere, I think that Little King's story deserves the sale a lot more right now than a NPC Pikmin 2. Especially considering I could get it even cheaper than Pikmin.
"why? its one of the greatest racing games ever made. actually THE greatest."
Except it isn't. Fast does not automatically mean good.
Is this somekind of joke? if so, I don't get it...AT ALL!
What's your beef with F-Zero GX? Reviewers and most people who have played it agree that it is the best F-Zero game to date. It's speed was never something that made me feel as though I was out of control. Frankly, it was a masterpiece.
I really should get around to getting LKS. Only reason I don't own it yet is because my more recent purchases have been older games I never got around to getting last gen. I also recently discovered what's available at my local Play N Trade store and oh man some of the rare gems they have there are just awesome.
But anyway, LKS might be an after Christmas purchase, along with The Crystal Bearers.
I have no beef with it. It just contains plenty of poorly designed tracks, so I have no idea why it's so over-rated.
THIS.
Pikmin 2 should totally be in the top 5 at the very least, but that's just me.
Other than that, good list.
I agree with you in that REmake SHOULD be ranked higher than Resident Evil 4. REmake was the better Resident Evil game, in my opinion. And as much as I love Wind Waker, I would never put it as number one. My number one spot would be reserved for Metroid Prime. That game is without a doubt my favorite GameCube game. Everything about it was perfect. The other games on the list are also good. F-Zero should have been ranked higher too. Can't complain though, I like all of those games.
I think it more likely that NOA looked at the sales for the current NPC games and went "ah whats the point in releasing Pikmin 2 nobody buys these anyway...who care that a new NPC Pikmin 2 would be cheaper than a used Gamecube version...". I think it is up there with the Trace Memory R and Disaster Day of Crisis myself.
Also, why, on GameDaily, is this PS3/RE5 news?
I actually own ALL of those games except Pikmin 2.
I'm not willing to spend full game price for it just because it's *rare*. Unless it was the Wii version, which, US doesn't have, so what's that about?
I agree with this list for the most part, but I may switch around some of the orders.
@Alkemystical
How so? I personally prefer it to most of the other Mario Kart titles.
@hcig
How did RE4 not do it's job? It's job was specifically to not be old RE and to take it in a new direction, which it did. And it sold awesomely because it was a great game.
@bobyoko
More like 3rd parties didn't care that much, not that 3rd parties aren't as good, if not better, than Nintendo in areas. Just that they had no interest.
That and you know RMC is biased, lol.
Also, on this list, 4 of the games are 3rd party (F-Zero GX is technically made by SEGA).
1) Metroid Prime
2) Resident Evil 4
3) Wind Waker
No Eternal Darkness? I'd replace Resident Evil remake with that. I would also include Killer7. I heart that game.
everything about that game screams masterpiece
Luigi’s Mansion
Super Monkey Ball 2
SSBM
Timesplitters 2 & 3
Eternal Darkness
LoZ: WW
MK: DD!!
Sonic Heroes
ToS
Baten Kaitos
PM: TTYD
Pokemon XD
I duno... but I loved Mario Galaxy. I beat it twice (both Mario and Luigi) I just thought it was a little too easy. And yes I got all the stars in the game. Mario sunshine never made me want to go back and play the way galaxy did.
But well, there are great games here, too. So I guess the GCN just had a lot of great games over all. Well, enough for me anyway.
ToS was my fav, too. Over 100 hours pure fun, crying, awsome story and characters, which other game offered so much? None.
Although in my opinion, Double Dash shouldn't even be on that list. But, I know it's wildly popular game, so my say means nothing.
Pikmin was my very first game. Although it frustrated me to no end trying to get the Geiger Counter from the Snagret, and the radar from the Beady Long Legs, I finally beat it after three or four years of getting the bad ending.
SSB Melee was my second game, and I had SO much fun with it. Unfortunately, 7 years of love poured into that game were deleted when my friend popped in my memory card to play a pirated copy of SSBM on his Wii. Haven't touched the game since.
Luigi's Mansion I could not appreciate at first, but since I got the game for free, I figured 'why not', and had a thoroughly great experience. The store demos offered at Wal-Mart just didn't do the game justice, lol.
Now, Mario Kart Double Dash...what a winning combination, Koopa Troopa and Baby Mario, riding in the green koopa car. Use a Chain Chomp for a free ride to the front, and use the triple shells to keep everyone at bay. I understood the lack of tagteam in MK:DS, but I was pissed about it in MK: Wii. They really need to bring it back.
And F-Zero GX...I know Miyamoto was huffing 'shrooms back when he made SMB (seriously trippy game w/o drugs when you think about it), but I have no idea what he was smoking when he thought Sega did anything but absolutely FANTASTIC for the franchise. The only gripe I have is the extreme difficulty, which I'm still only on the 4th or 5th chapter, lol. Might have to pop it in again...
I thought Paper Mario was the dumbest idea, so I stayed far away from it when at Blockbuster, but I thought to pick up TTYD out of the blue, and I had a blast. Out of the three so far, This is the best, followed by the N64 and the crappy, RPG-less SPM. Great story, well placed humour (especially when the 4th wall is broken down thanks to Goombella and Lord Crump), and an all-around epic adventure with loads of sidequests and background stories.
TimeSplitters 3. My friend had it on PS2, and I got to rent it (my first M game when under 17! I felt so happy ^_^). The multiplayer maps may have been smaller than it's PS2 counterpart, but it still a helluva lot of fun. Fun fact: I once had a dream where I was playing this game, on the couch, from the 3rd person. The exact scene I remember that was happening in the game was that I was comign around the corner shooting a boss with a brain for an ass. That dream occured probably around 8 years iirc before I even picked up that game from Blockbuster.
Soul Calibur 2 had Link, I needed a new game to tide me over until Wii was released (didn't actually get a Wii until March), and I rented twice before. The only tiem my sister ever beats me is when she spams the vertical attack for Xianghua (y button on button layout A, fyi).
Super Mario Sunshine. I spent ~$90 renting that game alone. Probably more. Picked it up after beating the main story as pre-owned. The copy seems to lag when jumping off a cliff and hovering in the beach level.
Worms 3D. Awesome game. Had to pick it up, despite being heavily scratched. Always great fun, even with the minor control glitches and superstretch worms, lol.
tl;dr my life story about
Pikmin
Super Smash Brothers Melee
F-Zero GX
Luigi's Mansion
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
TimeSplitters 3
Soul Calibur 2
Super Mario Sunshine
Worms 3D
I have never played a Zelda or Metroid game before Wii.
Except he never said that. He said he was disappointed from a sales perspective and he also didn't say which F-Zero game. What many people seem to forget completely are the GBA F-Zero titles (F-Zero GP Legend and F-Zero Climax).
He may have misunderstood the question as that whole interview seemed to lack the humble nature he usually has.
It is annoying how these stupid misinterpretations keep flushing around the Internet. The latest one being the Wii 2 will be smaller but the same power. Many sources had picked up on an interview and though he was talking about the console with that remark and not the controllers.
I only own 3 games on this list though, Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros Melee, and Soul Calibur. 4 actually because I have RE4 on the Wii I guess. I've borrowed/used to have Mario Kart Double Dash, Metroid Prime, and Super Mario Sunshine. (I sold Dash though, the rest are just games I rented or borrowed)
Wait, what? Wind Waker was largely superior than Twilight in my opinion. Twilight had many flaws as a Zelda game.
Anyhow, largely agree with the list though I question whether Prime should be 2 or not.
I would put Sunshine, Tales, Prime, Melee, and WW as my top 5.
My list in no order:
Metroid Prime
LoZ: Wind Waker
Smash Bros. Melee
Fire Emblem: PoR
Soul Calibur II
X-Men Legends (Sooo much fun to play co-op)
Metroid Prime 2
Luigi's Mansion
I know, that's only 8, but I tend to buy very few games for consoles due to the large price tags (Plus, I wouldn't rank some of the others I have as "top 10 material").
I'll make up for it by having more than 10 on my best of DS list.
I forgot entirely about AC. I just hated on that game before even renting it. Heck, it was my sister who I thought wasted a good rental, but bloody hell that game was addicting. I was even surprised at one of the guy's other files, who had OVER 1,000 BELLS IN HIS POCKETS :O
And I bought Starfox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet, because the screenshot on the back of the GameCube had a dinosaur fighting a fox.
Never played a StarFox game before that, but oh God is that game ecstacy. I think my best run-through of that game was 9 hours in one sit down. Might have to fix that
Also this list conveniently left out Skies of Arcadia Legends, Capcom vs SNK 2 EO, Tales of Symphonia, Killer7, Viewtiful Joe... I don't know how to feel
Here's my personal list:
10. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
9. F-Zero GX
8. Viewtiful Joe
7. Soul Calibur II
6. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
5. Pikmin 2
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3. Metroid Prime
2. Animal Crossing
1. Super Smash Bros. Melee
I'm not sure if Twilight Princess counts, but if it did it would be between Wind Waker and Pikmin 2.
RMC, please don't perpetuate that "Miyamoto hates F-Zero GX" rumor. It just came from an IGN podcast. The actual quote in question was probably referring to consumer reaction (i.e. sales), and he didn't even mention GX by name.
My only grievance with the game is I'm 2 blue coins away from 120 shines and even with the help of picture walkthroughs, I can't find them anywhere!!
I also would have included Killer7. I know it wasn't critically acclaimed, but it's such an awesome game. Very underrated.
I actually own all of these games as well, except for Pikmin 2.
I'd probably rank REmake over RE4 as I feel REmake is the best the Resident Evil series has to offer. RE4 absolutely deserves to be on the list though, of course.
@The_Dude1212
I wholeheartedly agree about Starfox Adventures. I just recently replayed through it a second time (I got it when it was released) and it definitely won't be the last time.
I own them all. I've made it my life's goal to obtain the best Gamecube library possible. I want to prove to the nonbelievers the truth that it was indeed a great system.
Double Dash didn't do much for me. I wouldn't put it in my top 10.
Sunshine is my favorite Mario game of all-time!! In fact, its in my top 3 games ever!
@ Skyofwelkup and The_Dude1212
People hate on Starfox Adventures because its not a traditional Starfox game, which is very true. If you stop thinking of it in that way though its just an incredible adventure that feels a ton like Zelda. I haven't replayed it in a while, but I definitely need to soon. I remember loving everything about it.
I never have, and I never will understand the hate for GC. It had an incredible lineup of AAA Nintendo titles, and the third party titles were top-tier as well. Some of my favorites of all time were on the Cube. Fantastic system, second only to the SNES I think, but its still pretty close.
nintendo gamers have turned into cupcakes which is why they all loved pikmin 2, there were no limits and it was a simple game overall.
pikmin 1 was awesome, it was the first game where i got to the end and couldn't beat it. i ran out of days to collect. i had to start all over again, and i wanted to do so, it was that much fun. plus the level design in 1 was much better than in 2. and lets be honest the 2 new pikmin really weren't needed. 1 kept it simple and let you do as you will.
also, speaking of cupcakes, please, when it comes to number 1, change it up a bit, make a 1A and a 1B because we all know that windwaker will be number one, lets just man up and move on.
I'm not sure what racing games you like... Maybe Need for Speed? Gran Turismo? Yeah. Those have tracks that are generally just curved lines circling around and around. F-Zero actually made the tracks interesting without going all Mario Kart and making them ridiculous. F-Zero is probably one of the greatest racers of all time. It's too bad you won't let yourself enjoy it. Maybe you're struggling with the difficulty? Story mode is a b****.
Anyways, GN you guys are obsessed with Metroid and Zelda. Good games, but they never make my top ten...
No. What everyone sees as difficulty, I see for what it really is; bad design.
I don't blame everyone for not being able to see it, because everything else about the game is utterly fantastic.
And no, I like neither Need for Speed or Gran Tourismo. I hate realistic racers.
Extreme-G, Mario Kart, Wipeout; these are vehicle based series I like.
well at least those are the games i spend most of my time
never liked smash bros, rpg, rts
never bought into the usual routine of "worst mario kart ever" , or "worst mario game ever" , "worst zelda ever". Especially given the absolute lack of competition from the other two.
The tracks are, in fact, superbly designed and I'm surprised you put Wipeout on your list... I've always considered Wipeout a poor man's F-Zero. I found Wipeout tracks very striaghtforward and uninteresting.
Oh well, agree to disagree I guess.
This. I thought story mode was potentially the worst designed thing in the game. Not that the tracks were difficult, but the way the missions were set up and how the game was programmed in these situations.
I think F-Zero is good, barring storymode, except the lame cutscenes, which I love.
@thisboywillbreak
You're cute.
1. Super Smash Bros. Melee
2. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3. Super Mario Sunshine
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Pokemon Colosseum
I could tear through the list but I won't bother. Seriously though, even the Gamecube didn't get any of the respect it deserved but the third party support was FAR better than it currently is for the Wii in my opinion. There was no bullcrap with the Gamecube either, within the first stages of the systems lifetime we got beautiful games like Starfox Adventures and Rogue Squadron 2; these games ripped the crap out of anything else last generation frankly.
Other easily better games than RE1 and SC(I mean COME ON!):
Paper Mario, Monkey Ball, Eternal Darknes!
Othervice very good list. I couldn't put them in any order, I love them all so dearly! Come to think about it, even as GameCube were thought to have weakest success, it had amazingly strong library quality vice!
Wind Waker is the best 3d Zelda...so that makes it best Zelda of all times.
I disagree. I think TP is the best Zelda ever made. It is Zelda perfected and refined.
It has the deepest and moodiest story out of all games in the franchise. It also introduced an amzing character in Midna and ended up being polished beyond perfection.
Most people fling poo at TP nowadays, but the style was what I want out of a Zelda game and the gameplay was not only perfect...parts of it were innovative. Some of the new items were simply amazing and the Wii controls added way more depth to the gameplay.
We all have our own opinions. My opinion that TP is the best Zelda ever made isn't a popular one, but it is how I feel.
Toon Link needs to stay on portbales from now on. The art style is beautiful but I don't want it in my console Zelda games.
I love Twilight Princes, but it had couple very weak points! It was too familiar(i like familliarity in Zeldas, but there are limits to everything) to keep things really interesting and it missed the very promising darkside theme in the dull tear drop collecting(I expected great things from it, when we were waiting for it, but it was the greatest disappointment when we finally got it, as Zelda 3's dimension changing was my fondest memories in gaming). I just wanted to get out from the damned dark side everytime I went there! And seconly it was far too easy. So easy, that it wasn't exciting anymore! Its hand holding attitude made the whole adventure feel flat, and this MUST STOP!!! No more too easy Zeldas(the Miyamotos Zelda patents sure are promising!)!!! Where Wind Waker excels, is the feeling of grand adventure, coming from its open world and interesting side characters. TP's spectrum of feelings were also a bit on a cold side when compared to WW's warm highlights and humour. When a story has this much warmth, the cold sides also feel really chilly! WW's main city is ultimate example of lovable, warm hearted side in Zelda games. Its absolutely full of touching moments. TP's Hyrule Castle Town was boring next to Windfall Island.
I don't mean to downplay TP. These were just couple of points I didn't appreciate so much. It still has millions of good points and I think Twilight Princess is one of the best games ever. It just cannot match WW...or they cannot be compared, because of differences in their styles create different emotions. I love them both dearly. The "(more)Realistic" style allows different themes that cartoon style might struggle to tell, and vice versa. Cartoon style awakes a young boy in an old man once more and can touch its player very deeply.
A random point for Twilight: TP gets massive boost from Wiimote in all kinds of aiming and I liked sword play in it, even if it was trigger based! I cannot wait for next Zelda, and I'm equally excited of either of style styles, it may have.

Not the way my list would look, but hey, they like what they like I guess. Though I wonder what the purpose of making lists like there is sometimes.
