As promised, the gang at ONM have answered your New Super Mario Bros. Wii questions. This is round one of three, because between you guys and the comments at ONM, there were a ton of questions! You can check out a few questions and answers below, but make sure to click over for the full piece.
Q: If playing with only two players, can you play as Toad?
A: Player two can play as Toad but Player one will always be Mario. Any other players who join can choose from Luigi or one of the two Toads.
Q: Is there any playable characters other than Mario, Luigi and the two Toads? I was kind of hoping for a wide variety.
A: No.
Q: How many hours will it take to finish for a person who is fairly decent at platformers?
A: It took me around six hours to complete, but that was blitzing through it and not collecting the Star Coins. That will easily add another seven or eight hours to the proceedings, because you'll obviously have to play through most of the levels again and some of the coins are in really awkward

Six hours, wonderful...
Okay. I think I know what I need to know. I obviously have to try the game now, with all the hype it's been getting, but my expectations are set.
@Inneverate
He's complaining? I don't think anyone was expecting the game to take 20 hours to beat.
It only takes an hour or two to fully beat SMB3, what's your complaint?
"Will multiplayer feature computer-controller characters?
Nope. Humans only I'm afraid."
So it looks like it's either solo or bust, if you're looking to play with the three other characters controlled by CPUs!

PS: That was from their website, there's a buttload more Q&A if you click the link, hope that helped HoL! ;D
Absolutely.
Great.. nice to know its an enjoyable experience for one person alone.
-Are there any multiplayer battle modes? If so, what is the objective of it? Is it like the DS VS. mode?
There's Free For All mode and Coin Battle mode.
Hehe.. I will enjoy coin battle mode teasing my friends.. also replay value confirmed.
-Would you say it's easier or harder than past Mario Bros. games?
I'd say it's easier than the end of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Lost Levels, and much harder than Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario. Bros. on DS. I'd put it on a par with Super Mario World.
Similar to SMW's difficulty is not bad at all but I was hoping for a real challenge.. Maybe is not as hard as they made it sound to be.
-Are there 80 levels? Do the levels vary?
I counted 74 stages.
74 levels and around 6 hours for a fast playthrough sound ok.. Someone should've asked how long are the levels though?
Perhaps it deserved the 7 given by EDGE, even.
It's the standard mario length and number of levels, how exactly does it deserve a 7 when NSMB got an 8?
That's coming from a guy who's played Mario since he was three though, so I would believe what he thinks is hard and what we think is hard are VERY different. >.>
Waitwaitwait, NSMB got an 8?!
How could a game that improves upon the original in every way get a lower score? I take what I said back.
Yup, according to metacritic they have an 8

Can someone please post a screen of the actual written review? I want to see their justifications of the score. They gave a lot of low scores this magazine (tekken 6 looks better than a 7/10)
Well, I've been playing Mario games since I was 6 so I think I can relate.. but yeah, what I call hard some may call easy and vice versa.
SMW wasn't a walk in the park neither.. some of those especial stages were tough.
Well, NSMB came out years ago on the DS. This game is coming now on the Wii, and expectations for what is on the Wii now are higher. The best the wii can do, and the best the ds can do are very different. Plus, There are more Mario games now for this latest one to be compared to. And it is very possible that they just didn't enjoy the title enough, or find it impressive enough to award it an 8 or higher. It takes more than a glitchless experience to earn an 8 or higher.
Game looks pretty good, and yeah, SMB3 (completing every single level) took me about an hour with a friend, so 6 hours is actually great.
Sure, if you use the Warp Whistles and skip worlds 2-7...
Six hours is alright, I just hope for tons of secrets to give me reasons to keep playing through.
I was disappointed by the fact there are no more powerups other than what we've already seen. SMB3 has the game beat in that category easily.
I'm still on the fence though as to what to put my money toward this month.
I've also been playing Mario since I was 3, but I don't run through SMB weekly. Either way... I assume it will still take me 10-13 hours of solo play to beat it with 100%. Plus I fully intend to play this game to 100% completion with my girlfriend and at least beat the game in 4-player mode with our "brawl" friends.
Now add in the fact that I've beaten NSMB DS 6 times to 100% completion and the two extra modes included in this game and I likely will have tons of hours into this game when all is said and done!
November 15th cannot come soon enough!
It sucks that there aren't any.
Obviously I realize that most of the ones from NSMB were from Super Mario 64 DS, but it really added to the package so much, that I would not be surprised if the ratings for this game are lower than the DS game.
"Sure, if you use the Warp Whistles and skip worlds 2-7..."
No. Unless you suck at the game, you can complete all 8 worlds in less than 2 hours. I've seen it done plenty of times on streaming sites. The average stage in SMB3 lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute.
And I beg to differ on the power ups. Having so many power ups that were so scarce was one of the game's only weaknesses. It's a smart idea they decided not to repeat that mistake.
Thats the problem I have with Chris saying it is on par with SMW. Does he mean SMW main quest or the special world? I hope someone at least mentions Yoshi's Island in the questions tomorrow (I really should have submitted a question I suppose...).
- GOD DAMNIT. I WANT TO PLAY LUIGI. At least my girlfriend can play Toad. D:<
- Ugh, but expected @ no other characters.
- Wait, Nintendo said the game was supposed to be tailored differently to single and multiplayer. D:
- Seems like it's not particularly hard. But I didn't play all the Mario games growing up, I played different games (Zelda, Sonic, etc) so it may still be hard for me.
- Good news about the graphics/sounds. :3
- He actually says it took 6 hours running through it and not doing anything else. He said it could take another 7 hours if you go back and get all of the Star Coins, so it could be 13-ish hours. Not as depressing.
- I can't tell if he is saying that you fight all of the Koopa Kids together or that the mini koopa clown car Bowser Jr. is a memorable boss battle.
- Not 80 stages. That's still a lot. That doesn't divide evenly into 8 worlds though. D:
- Glad there's music besides the NSMBDS music. Ugh.
@Inneverate
How about the fact everyone's like "OH MAN, MADWORLD IS TOO SHORT AT 6 HOURS"?
Why is it okay for Mario? Because an NES game was short?
@Inneverate
Another reason it would take longer is if you didn't grow up playing SMB3, which I didn't because all of my NES games when I was little were hand-me-downs from other people, and somehow, nobody had Mario 2 or 3 (or they didn't want to give it up).
I didn't own an SNES until after Gamecube, and the only Mario I got for it was SMW.
I'm actually only just now playing SMB3, and since I am unfamiliar with the items, worlds and everything, it's going to take me a lot longer.
Really?? I can't even beat Super Mario Bros. Stupid Hammer Bros. on second to last level grumblegrumble.....
It's different to me because Madworld is a one-time playing experience, mainly, while NSMB is more replayable. Along with that, NSMB has great multiplayer, where Madworld's is limited. NSMB also has the star coins to go back and get (I don't know about Madworld. My brother owns it but it's a bit too violent for me).
I also want to see the justification for the 7, but I bet it's Edge taking off a point or two for lack of online multiplayer.
@Totodile
I agree with you. SMB also had those "choose your path and if you choose the wrong one you won't progress at all" situations in world 7 or something.
Well, there goes my intent to buy. Stop being lazy Nintendo, new characters wouldn't take more than a few days to add.
The sound effects and the looping means you eventually did figure out the right path (by brute force). That said I never did get to world 8-4 in SMB so I don't know if that is worse.
Since Nintendo intended for all the characters to be the same i.e. jump the same, move at the same pace e.t.c. more characters aren't really needed, if only for the different design. And even Miyamoto said if he added Peach or Wario, he'd need to give them a specific characteristic.
- Forcing player one to be Mario is lame. I don't particularly mind, but there are some people who would really rather play as Luigi or even one of the Toads.
- I also don't like that you can't take Yoshi with you outside of the level he's at. They really should have done it like Super Mario World.
- No hidden characters? Expected, but still lame.
- I am, however, very happy to hear than it has more than just New Super Mario Bros. music. Enough of that theme can drive anyone crazy.
- <3 that they have the drum beat in the music when you are on Yoshi, like Super Mario World.
- I like what hear about the graphics and sound.
- I'm glad the game is a challenge but isn't harder than Lost Levels.
- The power-ups sound like fun.
- That boss battle awesome sounds awesome.
- Lots of levels. That makes me happy. :3
All in all, I'm still very excited.
I recently pulled out my NES and went through every single level of Super Mario Bros. 3 in two-player mode. Now, I'm no slouch when it comes to Mario. But it took me and my friend 4 hours to beat the game (approximately). We would get stuck on certain levels (dying about 5 times straight or so), but mostly we did pretty well.
I love the various suits in the game but they are a pain in the ass to get, especially the hammer bros. suit.
I don't mind being Mario.But since Yoshi can't be taken to other stages that is a bit disappointing.
I am happy that this game is going to at least give me a challenge if it does.We will see if it will tho.New Super Mario Bros. DS only took me 2 days to beat.That is excluding getting the left over Star Coins which i ended up finishing the 3rd day that i had owned NSMB DS.
i wont even talk about the lazy lack of more characters. when is nintendo going to actually MAKE a game vs taking old ideas and turning them in to $50 console cash cows? at least graphically it looks better, small miracles i guess.
@double dragon
yeah, that's why i enjoy the GBA versions better, you can get the hammer suits more often with the E-Reader. those suits are too cool to only get once or twice, it's nice to get to play around with them somewhat.
whats with the lack of levels? mario world was 92, the new games should be going up in number, not down. it sucks because DLC was meant for this game.
"DS game redo" What the heck? No offense, but are you being stupid on purpose? This is a completely different game. You've most likely stuck with that idea ever since the title was announced, and shunned yourself from watching footage.
Lack of characters? Has a Mario game ever had more than 4 characters? Because I certainly don't remember one. True, having two toads was a bummer, but don't make a big deal out of it, it's still a Mario game meant to be played exactly alike with whatever character.
DLC: No thanks please. I want my $50 game to be complete. Unless the game had a stage maker, you could upload those stages and buy them later, then DLC is a big no thanks.
If you're that upset about this game, then just stick to the DS game, after all it's the same thing for you. Or go with Mario Galaxy 2, which has even less differences (other than difficulty) than this one over their respective perquels.
