A portion of a Game Informer interview with Warren Spector...

GI: Why the Wii?

WS: Well, think about it. Would you really want to tackle convincing Halo or Grand Theft Auto players that they want to be Mickey Mouse? Would you really want to do that? In terms of finding a congenial audience, let’s go for a platform that’s known for Mario and Link and now Sonic. Come on. Honestly, with the unit sales on the hardware, it was kind of a lucky happenstance. We made the call to go to the Wii long before it was clear that the Wii was going to be, at least for now, the best-selling platform.

It was about going where the audience is and going somewhere where they’re going to accept a visual style that is more cartoony than people are used to seeing and where we don’t feel obliged to throw in every shader on the planet. “Look at the normal maps and shaders.” We don’t have to do that kind of stuff. It’s the right platform for this project, for sure.

This little gem pops up a bit later in the interview...

WS: Also, I want to do a Duck Tales game. Convince the world that a Duck Tales game needs to be made. I can’t convince anybody at Disney to let me do a Duck Tales game. How can that be?

Check out the full 6-page interview with gameplay details here

Thank the cosmos there's still a game designer out there with some sense, using what the platform has [not whining on what it don't] and thus tailormaking the project to it [not working backwards from the PS360 or using a PS2 base to save work and effort].

An awesome interview. I can't wait for this to spin in my Wii! :-D

Also, Duck Tales rocks. Needs to be in this in some form, and then a game. Maybe even in KH...

I would lose my damn mind if a new DuckTales games was made.

How could Disney not see the value of one their most beloved animated series as well as the decades long popular comic?

Also, how can WE convince Disney that a new DuckTales game be made? I'm all for Spector doing it.

....I got chills. I got more chills now then when Galaxy 2 was announced XD This would be amazing! I can't even imagine a DuckTales game on a current gen platform, it boggles my mind!

Epic Mickey looks freaking amazing and now we hear that the man behind it wants to make a new DuckTales? I'm in love.

i would love another DT game, but nothing will ever top the original.

if they try, they better not make it 3D in any way, shape or form.

I'd say Spector's got a point on his answer to the "Why Wii?" question (why is it that whenever there's a third party game with effort on the Wii the interviewers ALWAYS question why? Seriously, it's getting annoying at this point). While Spector does seem to be going a bit off of stereotypes, think about it, what "hardlycorez" is going to buy a Mickey Mouse game that pays tribute to his golden days? (note I'm only talking about the stereotypical modern "hardcore" audience)

Hardlycore 1: "Nt mi! Iz 2 buzy plyin' gmz wth teh gutz & gunz!"

Hardlycore 2 (who doesn't speak in really bad imitation 1337): "not me, mickey mouse is for dumb kids so it belongs on a stupid kiddie ass system like the sucky ass wii."

Wii is the console owned by the most families, and what do most families typically like? Disney movies and cartoons. Now while this game is definitely NOT for the "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" crowd (oh if those kinds of kids play this they will be crying like Spector wants), it is for those of us who grew up on the cartoons made during Walt's days, and it'll most likely also appeal to those who watched the 90s cartoons like Runaway Brain and the shorts on House of Mouse/Mickey Mouse Works.

I am a bit curious though, what about hardcore Kingdom Hearts fans? I'm a bit curious as to what they think about playing as a Mickey who actually dresses in his red shorts and doesn't wield a key that doubles as a sword. No offense to KH fans since I'm a big KH fan myself, but I'm equally a Disney fan as well.

As for the DuckTales comment: make a new DuckTales game and I'll cream my pants.

@Eternal Rain

I will cream in unison with you.

Anyway. Good for Mr. Spector! The Wii was definitely the right choice, but I think he's a bit off in some of his reasoning. Tons of HD fanboys were very jealous and upset by the game being confirmed as a Wii exclusive.

@Kodax

That won't be a problem. This is already going to be a Day 1 for me.

@Eternal Rain

I like their classic looks. I actually got happy when Donald and Goofy reverted to their classic outfits.

Who here have actually read the Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge adventures? McDuck definitely has an edge to him in the comics. They kept a fair share of it in the animated series, but in the comics, you didn't want to be on his bad side. ESPECIALLY financially.

Scrooge McDuck is one of my favorite Disney characters. Hands down.

Mehhh.

The same logic he uses for why this is a Wii title is used too often as to why 'mature' PS3/360 games don't show up on the Wii (even though they really should).

Oh well. Hope this game turns out good.

KH is a good example of how a children's game can penetrate the gaming community

if KH is hardcore, why wouldnt epic mickey be? its got a million times more awesome, and none of the animu sh*ttyness

As a huge KH fan, playing as oldtime Mickey doesn't bother me an ounce. I differentiated the two from the second EM was named.

nice answer by Mr Spector . Not really surprise i think the sales combined of banjo nuts, ratchet 1.2.3, sonic 1.2, lbp , kameo do not even amount to half of what mario galaxy sold . Clearly there is no platformer crowd on those machines .

I agree with Cort... The original DT hardly will be topped, not unless someone makes another 2D game of it that somehow surpasses it.

Any 3D iteration made could be great but that would be another ball park.

I really liked that in the interview he mentioned Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson. And I agree with him that Ducktales are watered down version of the amazing Carl Barks comics. These quotes gave me faith about how he is going to handle the characters. By the way you should find and read the works of these great comic artists. It is a shame that they are not really recognised in their homeland.

Mario is THE biggest icon in gaming.. so that's not really a fair comparison.
