A portion of a 4cr interview with Akitoshi Kawazu, producer...

4CR: The battles in Crystal Bearers are action-oriented, not turn-based like in previous games. What were some of the key influences when designing the gameplay?

AK: We designed the game with the goal of making it an action game overall, rather than just making action-oriented battles. We think that we’ve made a compelling game that takes our worlds and stories and combines them with a GTA-type of a game.

4CR: Can you discuss the multiplayer component of the game, particularly the “assist mode?”

AK: Yes. It is the Wii after all, so we’ve tried to implement as many scenes as possible where a second player can either assist or get in the way of your progress. The main character’s movements and camera controls can only be manipulated by player one, but the second player can pick up and throw items and monsters, as well as protect the main character. Using this functionality, the second player is free to interact and participate in the game alongside the first player.

Ehh... wasn't the FFCC series NEVER turn based? Why is this new and exciting?

@MoldyClay

Because it's not the CCs that have come before? They were abysmal [especially the first]...

Grand Theft Auto wasn't a sole influence.

The multiplayer mode sounds intersting.. if anything I am a bit more interested in this game because my brother really likes the FF series so it could be fun to give it a go together.

@NeroSuferoth

I agree. It does sound like the assist mode could be entertaining. My girlfriend and I both beat Mario Galaxy seperately and then teamed up for a "co-op" run-through (switching off every star) and it was a blast. So far this game appears to have a very similar mechanic to the one present on SMG so it could end up being a good time!

I actually didn't read the Multiplayer part before.

It looks like it's just a copy of Galaxy's. That's cool. I think. Never used Galaxy's.

@Chosenoneknuckles

Well, my point was, they were like "not turn-based like in previous games", but NONE of the CC games are turn-based.

And you're silly. Maybe Ring of Fates and the WiiWare titles were rubbish, but with other people, the first one is fun (alone... not so much; and the means to play multiplayer is silly; But the game was beautiful looking and had fun multiplayer IMO) and the DS version of Echoes of Time is supposedly great unless I missed something.

The fact that a japanese game developer took inspiration from GTA of all games... it's mind boggling.

I really wish this game does well, too.
