October 25, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

Miyamoto's Digital Contents Expo keynote didn't bring any new game information, as many were hoping. It did offer some insight into the world of Miyamoto, as far as his life's work goes.

- Wii's aim was to go back to the basics of gaming
- Zelda's original ideas of freedom for the player were met with opposition
- Kirby's first name was “Tinkle Popo”
- NoA and NoE hated the name 'Wii', for the obvious bathroom relationship

Basically that was one problem I had with the first Zelda..

As a kid I needed some guidance and the game pretty much left you on your own... also I hated (still do) labyrinths and that was how the game felt to me back then.

I'm curious as to what were the opposing claims they gave Miyamoto.

"At first they called him Popopo, and the game was to be called Twinkle Popo. But somewhere along the line his name was changed to Kirby, and the name of the series to Hoshi no Kaabii, or Kirby of the Stars."

According to this. '-'

I didn't expect them to reveal anything. I expect the trailer for Zelda Wii to be shown at GDC '10.

I really like that feeling in Zelda game. For me it's one of the things that are still really important in a Zelda game. That was also important in 3D Mario games.

This gives a whole new meaning to Tingle.

Kirby's NOT AN ONLY CHILD. :D

@NeroSuferoth

Since RMC likes to completely change the things the site originally said:

"- Miyamoto said that both NoE and NoA hated the name Wii, because it sounded like a slang word for urine. But now many people feel familiar with the name."

Also, the way RMC phrases it, he makes it seem like he's saying Tinkle Popo is Kirby's first name, like, Tinkle Popo Kirby, when it just says "He was formerly called"

And also, Nintendo were the ones who didn't like the original idea of Zelda, saying it was because the player wouldn't know what to do.

yea, but do you know how important zeldas "do as you will" gameplay effected gaming?

it wouldnt be bold to say GTA took inspiration (GTA being credited with sandbox gaming) from zelda

its hard to figure out sometimes, but i really enjoy a game that doesnt simply drag you along, "left turn only" doesnt seem like you have any control over the game

@nintycool

No. RMC just likes to not quote things properly.

The actual thing said first name as in original name. He was originally 'Tinkle Popo' and is now 'Kirby'.

Not surprised at the western branches reaction[s], Japan is perverted, yes, but so greatly are we [in general].

Was I the only one over here to read it as 'We' first-off?

@MoldyClay

Kirby and Tingle. Best brother siblings. Ever. :-D :-P

Wish we could get a better translation. Google and Babblefish always make the grammar sound wierd.

Anyway...

"- Wii's aim was to go back to the basics of gaming"

Does sorta feel that way with some games.

"- Zelda's original ideas of freedom for the player were met with opposition"

Zelda 1 does confuse me quite a bit, but the later games with the map screens make navigation more managable. Anyway, I do like how you can go anywhere in the games.

"- Kirby's first name was “Tinkle Popo”"

I wonder why...

"- NoA and NoE hated the name 'Wii', for the obvious bathroom relationship"

Considering the Internet's general reaction to the name change during the first week, I'd say it took everyone a while to get used to the name.

@MoldyClay

So I was right.. they meant pee.

About Zelda, Obviously not too many people had my problem because of the subsequential success of the series but Nintendo was right in that some players wouldn't know what to do.

More especifically for me was: where to go?

@hcig

I know that Miyamoto has said before that giving the players freedom was important to him but I think that where he really accomplished it and where most games took inspiration was after Mario64

@Pinheadlarry

Hahaha.

I think the Wii as a whole has done a better job in going "back to basics" this year if that really is their intent. Games like Punch-Out!!, Boy and His Blob, New Super Mario Bros. Wii (presumably), even Muramasa harken back to the feel of the good old NES days.

That said, my beef with regard to the overall shoddy treatment of the Virtual Console still stands. It makes me die a little to see "VC games for Japan" revealed (which knowing what to expect beforehand would be nice), and then see Japan get 3-4 times the VC games we could ever hope to expect per month.

He's right. It wasn't "Tinkle Popo". The name of the character was Popopo (like Dedede) until his name was changed to Kirby for unknown reasons.

@Alkemystical

yeah.. youre right, adding motion controls havent revolutionized the way we look at games today.. its not like other consoles are following this trend because its been an important milestone in gaming.. not revolutionary in the least.

as to the name change... yeah, i didnt like it at first. but overtime i grew used to it and it makes sense considering the wii has been all about fun and wii sounds fun, but i hated nintendo for awhile because while talking to a customer at a store i worked at, before the wii came out, i said "i cant wait to play with my wii over thanksgiving" the moment i said it i mentally slapped my forehead and said "doh".. when i see him he still brings it up...

I agree, the original Zelda funnily enough never gets a mention when it clearly deserves it.

Open-world games may have existed before it (Elite), but it may as well have invented sandbox gaming as it is exactly like what we know today.

Nice cynicism there, buddy. I bet you got that line from a Youtube comments section.

Nobody recognizes a revolution until it's in hindsight, especially those espousing the ways of old. Whether or not Wii ends up being seen as an NES-esque turning point remains to be seen, but that;s certainly been Nintendo's hopes since the console's development began.

@NeroSuferoth

The original NES release of Zelda came with a partial map to help get players started (at least in North America). Unfortunately, such maps haven't been included in recent ports of the game. There's the internet nowadays of course, but if you want a really good Zelda experience I recommend taking some paper and making your own map as you go along. That allowed me to get over my reliance on in-game maps.

I agree that the original zelda is very hard to play if you don't have a map/guide with you. Thankfully, once you have one it's a very good game.

What exactly is "the basics of gaming"?

funny to see him a place called the "digital contents expo" when he clearly doesn't grasp the idea fully.

with all the f** bathroom talk, why not just name him "tinkle poop" and be done with it. tinkle poop on the wii, now that's a game for the ages.

It should not be surprising that a game that has a then-radical concept would be one that will meet opposition. It happened with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker because of the then-controversial cartoonish character designs. However, the opposition subsided and people came to accept the character designs. The game won critical acclaim, Game of the Year awards, and received the GameCube's only 40/40 score from Famitsu. Without bold concepts, video games would have been static, not progressing as it is today.

now if you'll excuse me i need to go to the little men's room to take a snes

@BigLord

"What exactly is "the basics of gaming"?"

everything that brought people back to gaming after the gaming crash in the start of the 80s.

everything that basically made Nintendo a household name.

something to that effect i believe.

@Nin2000

"And let me tell you, Wii is nowhere near the worst name out there : iSnack 2.0 - what a horrible name!!"

to me the worst name out there was the N-Gage.
