Co-founder and CEO of Facebook game specialist Playfish Kristian Segerstrale doesn't think that traditional gaming methods are going to be around much longer. According to Mr. Segerstrale, “physical media doesn’t have a chance in the future.” Segerstrale is another in the long line of developers that are calling for the end of physical media, and the rise of digital distribution.

But what if in the next generation everyone had abandoned physical media for digital downloads? Nintendo would likely stick with physical media for primary gaming and software (with smaller downloadable games online as a side service), perhaps then people will actually be thankful Nintendo's not rushing head-first into the bandwagon like everyone else.
This.
Exactly right, they obviously just want to have all the balls in their court.
Passionate gamers such as myself enjoy owning something visible thank you.
Games are already "all digital" they been so from the beginning.
I'll guess I'm not passionate enough than.
What are the disadvantage for consumers again? No barging bins?
Exactly. Taking away resale rights? Discount opportunities? Price drops? People act like games will get cheaper for the customer if this comes about. But, as a realist, I can't see a benefit for myself, or any other consumer in a switch to an entirely download format.
Companies like Activision, Ubi, and EA (to an extent) made their recent fortunes by screwing the customer. A license to do so without restriction will give us an implosion that would make 1983 Atari blush.
Just look at some of the prices on Steam, a good platform for sure but seriously where is the 'value'?
I don't see it.

To add to what rpguy_ad said (no trades, no discounts and retail competition),
No taking a game round a friends house to play.
No value for collectors.
No telling if you are able to keep these games forever (the server might be shut down, and if your hard drive becomes a problem you're screwed)
Internet speeds all around the world can be pretty shocking, so the process is slower especially for big titles.
Basically, no actual control.
Hehe.. Ok, and lets pretend you didn't get what I meant.

This and this.
Good, someone has some sense around here.
I would love to have a digital-only handheld like the PSP Go. Because the convenience of it being portable means I can take it wherever I want, and I wouldn't need an internet connection at my house. I can just download my games from the library's Wi-Fi.
But a digital-only home console would suck (no internet at my house).
Digital-only handheld: Good
Digital-only home console: Bad
Indeed, downloading a whole console is a bad idea! Even downloading games takes a while, imagine downloading a console!

This and this.
I do really do think there's only a handful of us gamers here [and elsewhere in the garden that is the interwebs] that have any sense at all anymore.
games don't save themselves, and most people are unwilling to shell out $150 for a good HD to save.
now there are some really cool facebook games like mafia wars, and many others, but they are very limited at best. right now, you can't really offer a new game (disc) feeling over a DL.
