I just want to state right from the state that I do not believe any of this, but my inbox is being flooded with the tip.
You know how Michael Pachter keeps talking about Wii HD or Wii Plus...or whatever the hell he wants to call it? Well, another supposed insider has leaked information on the next iteration of Wii. That's all I'm going to say about it, as I want to keep things quiet. Remember, this is all 100% unconfirmed, and I won't believe a spec of it. Still, it's always fun to discuss!

so is this like the PS3 slim or a true successor to the Wii? Assuming this is true.

It'll never happen. Why?
"- A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2."
That's why.

Not many details other than the Blu-Ray drive/player in it.
Credibility for the article would be the part about Nintendo not announcing it until a month before it's release(*looks at the new DSi in Japan).
@PsychoDuck
Yea, that was odd for a "rumor", especially since you can't buy Nintendo consoles from Nintendo.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Theres no way its gonna have Blu-Ray, the Wii doesn't even have DVD playback because of the "cost"..
And theres no way its gonna have 1080p either, they will do the bare minimum for HD (720p) and thats it.
And like PsychoDuck said, no way they would let you trade it in.. thats just not them

1080p and BlueRay? Well, these technologies get much more common, cheaper and less power hungry so I believe that both of them would be in Wii2 (or whatever it is called). Nintendo remembers well its problems with N64 sticking with cartridges.
But end of next year? Too soon for me, would not believe it. And trade-in old Wii? Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

Man, I'd love it to be true.
The Super Wii!
* * *
That, and you know what else would be great? A WiiWare release of the tanks game on the Wii Play disc, revamped.
A more robust game; tank weapon upgrades; saves; real multilayer, competitive in addition to co-op; map maker -- it would be awesome! My wife and I have been playing it again recently.
Though I fear all of this, Super Wii included, is just too much to ask of Nintendo; bless 'em.

actually, the bluray isnt that far fetched, because nintendo will do ANYTHING to slow piracy (even sacrifice vital memory space on the game cube)
October 28, 2009 at 2:15 pm
I would never trade my Wii in. I like being able to play all Wii games, and I like ocarina.
October 28, 2009 at 2:15 pm
2010? C'mon, it's not like the Wii doesn't have any more life in it. And a Blu-Ray drive? I hope Nintendo isn't really this stupid.
October 28, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I call BS. Naturally I'm not the only one.
But regardless of particular rumours, a new Nintendo console is coming, and if the pattern holds, it's possibly about time.
1985 - NES
1991 - Super NES
1996 - Nintendo 64
2001 - GameCube
2006 - Wii
Nothing new there. With the exception of the NES, we've had 5-year lifespans for Nintendo consoles, so it wouldn't be surprising to see one in 2011. Given that we usually hear about the new console a year in advance, we'd hear solid news about the successor in 2010, so the rumours aren't premature.
Of course, that's sticking to the five-year formula. With the success of the Wii, it could stick around for longer. But with the apparent pressure for HD, probably not that much longer.
This news story is most likely, just as it says, only a wishlist.

This would explain why we have seen nothing from Zelda.
Ohhhh lol, and Miyamoto said after the graphical quality of MH3 they would have to do better with the next Zelda. Maybe thats what he meant.
Also, this now makes the Capcom porting rumour much more convincing. It would make sense that 3rd parties have finally pressured Nintendo for once, instead of the opposite.

What's wrong with the current Wii that people wanna see a Super Wii HD Extra Plus so bad?
Not a new console... no, they want the same Wii with specs closer to the twins. I don't get it, really.

LIES!! It's all lies. This is coming out in 12 months? Yeah, right. A more believable situation would've been to place it at LEAST two years out.
My favorite part is:
"A scheme will be available..."
A scheme indeed.

@Venkman, Nintendo have a scheme.
Why wouldn't you offer trade ins on the Wii in order to guarantee more interest in the Wii2?
Why wouldn't you start upgrading the console, just like the DS, in order to remain competitive? They can certainly afford to do it now.
Maybe the under powered Wii was always a major concern for the company.

there's nothing concrete in that specs list except bluray . It will either be bluray or those holographic storages , anything to stop piracy . Since they have the new zelda AND dragon quest X , i really don't think they'll reveal anything soon.

"Exclusive: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?"
Not that I had any hope of it being real to begin with, but I lost total interest and disregarded it when I got to "Wii 2".

Duh.
Those info are so generic...
OF COURSE it will have 1080p, Blu-ray Disk drive and a release date of almost same day in all countries.
I think they're just trying to buy some publicity with generic, sure, information.

I suspect an upgrade to the Wii is coming sooner rather than later, but 2011 seems much more likely than 2010. I kind of doubt there'll be support for 1080p or have a built in Blue Ray drive (I'd much prefer a true storage solution) and the idea of having a trade in for the older Wiis is pretty absurd (well, aside from whatever is being offered at the GameStops of the world).
October 28, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I think Sony just may be a tad too bitter to allow Nintendo access to Blu-Ray after their last alliance
But, it seems too far fetched. With the major Mario, Zelda and Metroid games coming out all in 2010, along with strong 3rd party support as Monster Hunter 3 and Red Steel 2, it wouldn't make sense to put out quality games that'll get knocked on for being 'last generation', especially if companies expect it to have the long tail of sales...
2012 or even 2013 sound more likely than 2010. Hell, I'd prefer it that way. If Nintendo manages to get into a pattern of consistently getting their system out before M$ and Sony, it'll force the other's hands sooner than they hoped for, and include last gen gimmicks

Blu-Ray? Ha. As if.
Nintendo wouldn't use tech the others are currently sporting [and have a tight hold on], especially with Blu-Ray as mainstream unpopular as it is. They'd go with something new and 'better'[I use that loosely as there's bound to be split of opinion on how good it'd be], like holographic storage, or some tailored variant.
The only confirmed thing we know about the 'Wii 2'is that it will support HD resolutions. It'll likely be powered akin to a 360 or a PS3 [probably something in-between], but even that's just an assumption.
It [should] be out worldwide, as well as Nintendo games in general [tho it won't].
The console won't be announced till 2011 and out till 2012 at least, though, I highly believe.
In short, this is a graphics whores fandream. Probably GAF made.

The only thing I dont believe is 2010, but I can see them annoucing it in 2010. I dont get why some people think its so far out there for Nintendo put out such a powerful system, this is the only Gen that Nintendo had the weakest console. The techn is so much cheaper now, look how cheap PS3's are and Sony sales at a lose, Nintendo never sells at a lose, so I can see them going all out on Wii 2 after all the money they made on Wii.
edit
@The_Dude1212
Sony does not own Blu-ray, Blu-ray is a technology, we even have rumors 360 will get a blu-ray upgrade.

These 'analyst' act as if they are prophets or telling us info that we don't already know. Of course a new console is coming out, that's what usually happens every 5-6 yrs. It's all just a matter of when. I bet when whoever's new console comes out, these same analyst tell us 'I told you so'. You don't say, Sherlock!

@MegaPowa
I wasn't referring just to the Blu-Ray part (I have no idea what it would take to get the Blu-Ray licence, but considering Nintendo hasn't even felt it's worth it to get the DVD license...). A Wii2 next year that just added more power and visuals would be a dumb move business-wise. For one thing, it would split the Wii's base as it is, since the superior graphics of the HD twins overshot many of the Wii's customers own needs and values. More importantly, it would bring Nintendo further into direct competition with the HD twins, as opposed to the indirect competition that's differentiated them and enabled the Wii's success in the first place (AKA Blue Ocean/Red Ocean stuff). Microsoft and Sony are just bigger companies, able to leverage power from their other divisions and such, so as last generation should prove, direct competition would put Nintendo in a bad position.
However, if there was an additional hook, like even better motion controls or some other differentiating capability, Nintendo's position might not be nearly as bad.
But this is all just in terms of business strategy. If such a console is released a year from now, I personally would be excited for it and buy it on day one. But I'd have to wonder just how well the platform was going to fare in the future...

Why is that so far fetchd when Nintendo did just that with the DSi? Or atleast gamestop did it.
If you think about it guys, Capcom porting over the MT engine, No Zelda screens being shown, Miyamoto commenting on the next iteration of the wii, analysts predicting netflix on wii in the next year, the wii 2 could be right around the corner. It would be very nice to see a 2010 release date, but 2011 is another possibility and would be my latest guess for it coming out.

One thing I really want? All of my WiiWare and VC games to be transferrable to the new system.
I don't want the 70+ games I own to go the way of the dodo once I upgrade to a new system.

Blu-ray still overshoots consumers, so for them to increase the cost of the system by adding it makes no f*** sense. Majority of this makes no sense from a blue ocean or disruption standpoint.

I'm not counting any of this out (even the trade-in thing which is genius considering the too-soon 2010 release), because:
1. Blu-ray/HD is is both inevitable and a good counter for piracy.
2. It's not actually Wii 2, but Wii HD, like Patcher predicted all along.
If this were Wii 2, graphics, games, controllers, too soon of a release date, and add-ons like Wii Motion Plus would become such a ridiculous problem to carry-over. Wii Motion Plus would become a major negative point if they just came out with Wii 2 and the Wii 2 controller in such a short time, even with all the major Wii Motion Plus games coming out next year.
So my signs still point to only a Wii HD and nothing more.

Well MaxConsole had specs of the full specs of the wii months in advance back in 2006, so small tidbits could have reached them about the next Nintendo console.
That said if this truly the "Wii 2" and not a "Wii HD" the release date does seem suspect.
Blu-ray in the next console wouldnt surprise me at all either.

I was meaning to say wiiHD when i said wii 2. I understand the difference but i was reffering to wii hd. Wii 2 wont be out for a while.

If its just an upgrade i dont see the problem with releasing it in the 4th year. I was implying that the rumour could possibly hold some weight because of the recent announcements that i've stated. Shut your mouth old man.

I don't see how adopting such a strategy means that they can't use normal business practices...
-
This is frankly, utterly ridiculous.
Blu-ray? Seriously why, especially considering the only dual layer game on the Wii is Brawl. Nintendo don't like owing money to anyone (hence no DVD), and they would rather make their own storage device than use something partly owned by Sony.
A new console this early? considering the Wii has hardly been pushed at all yet (in terms of graphics, M+ etc), and is still chugging along unmatched why kill it off? HD penetration is still crap, the market isn't big enough for Nintendo to bother.
Trading in your console for a discount?!?!
Making a Wii 2 would be the outright DUMBEST decision Nintendo could ever possibly make.

Point: We thought that Japanese guy that said "there will be ANOTHER revision to the dsi in a year" was crazy(including me) and look what happened. I dont think it happens all the time, but some of the recent actions(by devs and Nintendo) tempt me to think it could happen again.

blu-ray? doubtful, not even M$ is ponying up for it, so the idea that nintendo would is really stupid at best.
we can't even get basic dvd, much less blu-ray from them.
