Yup. And upon seeing it, it looked much bigger in that magazine scan to me. Still, if someone had to choose between this model and the original DSi...they'd be crazy not to choose this one. Damn.

I really don't see the point to this.

Games are simply going to be output in lower resolutions, making them look worse than they otherwise would.

Of course, recent trends point to Nintendo not really caring about things like that anymore. Still, if you're going to do something like this, why not just make a more powerful handheld?

PIXEL *cough* SUBSTRATES!!!! Seriously. The original DSi screen size upgrade made the pixels pretty big... This is just crazy unless your eyes demand such pixelation.

For what it is - a model for older people - Nintendo hit the nail square on the head. The design of the pen stylus, the shapes of the system, the size for larger or older hands, and the size of the screen so it's easier to use. Perfect.

This ladies and gentlemen, tells me DSi is a long term platform, and that this is another means to keep it that way. I hope it opens up a new handheld market for Nintendo's older crowd that the Wii has. This may even get more Wii owners to get a DS.

I applaud this, but at the same time know that it's not for me.

I still have to say WOW at the screen... dang. The battery life also amazes me.

@NINTENDOGAMER17

Yeah thats what I heard too, I think its pretty cool that Ninty is opening up the console market to older ones.

Games like Brain Training have been marketed to older ones for a while now BUT it would be a waste if they couldn't see them properly.

Its nice that Nintendo cares about gamers young and old. Don't be suprised to see a "kiddie" DS with Yoshi stickers released soon (you heard it here first lol) :)

PS lets hope the internets don't twist this good gesture like they always do.

The fancy stylus is nice, and of course the huge screens are a neat incentive.

But man, that thing is bulky now, The extra bulk on it is just not very appealing.

Hmmm... I modeled a DSi LL with paper with the measurements. It's not so bad actually. It's almost the size of the original PSP (the depth is actually a couple of cm bigger than the PSP...).

I remember in High School I used to carry my PSP around in my pocket with no problem. Other students would carry it in their pocket too with a protective case (made the thing bulkier) and they never complained.

I think it's gonna be the same case here (except now I wear tighter jeans, so that might be a problem lol...). I tend to carry a messenger bag or backpack anyway.

Many women (and young girls too) carry a purse anyway, so they can place the DSi LL with no problem.

I really don't see such a problem with the size. My only concern is the whole pixel thing. I really love the new screen size and I will get the DSi LL, but the whole pixel thing really does concern me...

Ah, yes I can see where you're coming from.
I have small hands, and I occasionally take my DS when I go out (although I do play it mostly at home), and to me, the DSi size feels perfect for what I want it for.

I have to admit though, if the Wine Red DSi LL comes out in NA, I will have to put a lock on my bank account to resist buying it. :P

Also, since I'm seeing a major lack of being able to transfer games from i to i, I might import one. (Which works for me, giving me the Japanese shop channel and DSiJP-exclusives.)

Wuh oh, as the side by side of the hinges points out, the space between the screens is the same, not proportionally larger. That'll throw off games that treat the two screens as one (Contra, Yoshi's Island, Metroid Pinball)... Not like it would matter to the older folks anyways.

I wouldn't worry too much about the pixelation, I mean, it can't be much worse than playing 16 bit games on the Wii on a decent sized LCD, can it?

It is larger and heavier than I thought. At least Nintendo has formally confirmed the DSi revision which we now know as DSi LL. While heaviler than the DSi/Lite, at least it has better battery life. We do not know whether the DSi revision will be as successful as the DS Lite and DSi, but it will increase DS sales in Japan.

Honestly I can't see any reason why you would buy this unless you have farsighted or something. The games will be the exact same resolution and it won't fit in your pocket anymore. Not to mention the DS has been released for five years now, it's only a matter of time until Nintendo releases the next generation DS/Gameboy/whatever it may be. It makes ZERO sense to purchase this monster.

@bszelda

Why do you say that? Why are there people who complained about the existence of a DSi, don't buy it, then ask for a successor to the DS line.

Is it more horsepower? The DSi has that. Would the new successor to the DS be backwards compatible with the DS? The DSi works with all DS games.
It covers the successor territory when the time for DSi exclusive carts will appear on the market.

@ferko

So just because they made the screens bigger makes it reason to upgrade? Not once have I ever looked at my DS and said "Oh man I wish the screens were bigger". You know why I never said that? Because the resolution will be the EXACT same. There will be pixels up the ass and from what i've seen from the DSi, motion blur will become much more prevalent. I regret buying my DSi at all simply at the fact that the DS is reaching the end of its cycle and I doubt DSiWare will ever actually pick up. The only thing my DSi is good for that my DSLite couldn't do was fit in my pocket so I could use it instead of an iPod because i'm waiting for Apple's next refresh. This new DSi can't even fit in your pocket. Some portable system this is going to be.

By the way!
This is NOT huger than Original Style DS. It's much thinner, almost as slim as DSi. I think I'm leaning towards it instead of DSi. Really, it depends mostly on its release date, which HAVE to be before SoulSilver, as well as the resolution, which I hope will not make graphics too pixelated.

Thicker, Wider and Heavier than the DSi? No thanks, I'll keep my current DSi.
As it is now, I hardly take my DSi with me and opt instead for my smaller and lighter iPod touch. The DSi LL monstrosity would never leave the house!

It's odd that after 6 years of DS that they now choose to make an extra large version.

That's a whole lot bigger than I expected it to be. Even the Stylus is bloody huge!

Hmm.. 3 hour charging time, and 1-3 hours longer battery life than existing DSi? Damnit, now I may have to upgrade again. Screen size is one thing but the battery life extension and relatively short charging time is sweetening the deal quite a bit for me.

My only concern is whether or not I am able to transfer all my existing DSi profile and application stuff to the DSi LL. I assume Flipnote Studio will come pre-installed as it does on regular DSi units now, but what about the DSiWare games I've downloaded?

Yes. Let me quote Ricky Gervais from an SNL short: "It's funny because it's racist."

http://www.8asians.com/2008/05/19/satur ... se-office/

I'm not a racist though, and I hate racists. One of my best friends is from South Korea. He's a game designer and he's not impressed by the new DSi. Another of my best friends is from Chile. Another friend is from Finland. I also know a girl whom is half-Korean half-Swedish and she's one of the cutest, smartest and most talented girls (or humans for that matter!) I've ever met! :D By the way, you can't know that I'm not Japanese. But I'm not Japanese although I wish I could speak Japanese because I'm really into Japanese culture as you might have guessed. I bought my brand new white DS Lite last Friday. :)

Edit: My friend from Chile makes rather racists jokes about Swedes for example and I join him joking about Swedes even though I'm Swedish. People first complained when Sacha Baron Cohen made jokes about jews until they found out that he's actually a jew himself. That's strange. I don't mind if people joke about Swedes. By the way; Inga from Sweden says hi! :P

What's all this stuff about lower resolution? The resolution is the same. The screen size is larger, yes, but the resolution itself hasn't changed at all. The pixels themselves are slightly larger, but that's it. The image isn't being stretched in any way.

In other words, the image will look fine. You need to get significantly larger than 4" before 320 x 240 starts to look bad.

It's something I wouldn't personally buy so it's the devil. Also it's for old people, and old people are the devil.

I'm impressed that the battery life is actually going to be improved on this thing. If it comes to the US I may consider it, depending on how it looks in person and if there's a reasonable trade-in deal.

Actually, scratch that. I can't transfer the games I've downloaded. So Nintendo would have to create an avenue for that as well.

I know, and people tend to think the L/R thing is fair game, I was just weirded out.

No list of your ethnic friends and the racist things they say about each other is necessary lol

But yeah that skit you are alluding to was pretty funny, I think the funniest part was when Ricky said 'It's funny because it's racist' at the end :)

@Gogetenks

Thank you. Let's watch how many people acknowledge you said that though. So far I've had zero luck. Even people defending the larger screens seem to think it will be stretched, they simply say they won't mind. I'm glad you at least realize it!

:D Yes, that part in the end was the most fun. Well, I'm gonna leave my computer now because I'm gonna go to my friends aunt's apartment (she's from Finland) and help (for free as always) her with her faulty Internet connection. Have a nice day! ;)

The only thing I'm annoyed about is the longer battery life for this large thing. They should've kept the DS Lite's battery life or even increased it for the DSi.

Man! That is such a beautiful machine. That dark brown one is frigging tempting.

But how long from now until there's a real update, not just to the screen size and outside but the insides? The real DS 2. Or Super DS. Or DS+.

Personally I like Super DS.

Seriously, God damn, if you don't know how resolutions and pixels work, then don't talk your disgust about them. This is going to be the same resolution, the same amount of pixels, the same exact image as previous DS's except bigger. There will be no pixel stretching, there will be no "pixelling", it's the same picture but like if you were using a slightly bigger magnifying glass.

There is a reason I don't talk about cars or tell people how this part of a car shouldn't work; Because I don't know anything about cars. I use one, that doesn't mean I know anything about it. Stay out of the technical stuff guys, see how fast this "pixeling" stuff has spread like wildfire among the morons? Probably due in part to that image that was shown the other day of horribly stretched DS screens in JPG without proper ratio stretching.

If it had higher resolution too, it'd be a perfect portable small drawing tablet. I already like what Colors! offers on the DS, but with a bit more Res and bigger screens to paint on, it'd be a hellishly nice deal. Too bad Nintendo doesn't realize that market, because I know a few people who got a DS with cart for colors! alone, as alternative to a much more expensive and bigger tablet PC for drawing.

Weird. My opinion of the matter stays the same: if it has a GBA slot, I'll probably get it. Otherwise I won't bother to care about its existence unless it brings the DSi's price down substantially.

i think it's great they have a version of the system for people who might otherwise have difficulty with smaller gadgets.

i'm glad that other than scaling the size it's not really any different from the DSi... i already thought the 'i' was a mistake that splinters the DS market, so at least this just offers some variety.

won't be buying this though... the smaller/tighter the pixel density, the sharper things are going to look, all other things being equal. but i wonder if the larger area will allow for a different kind of precision with the stylus?

If this came out the same time as the DSi, I still would have gotten the DSi. This big one's not as portable and the games would look worse on those larger screens. I'm surprised so many people want it. It won't fit in your pocket!

Still, I love that red color. That's A color I would have enjoyed on the DSi.

@cortjezter

It'd be great if someone could find out. As I said, the DS is a great thing for sketching and quickpainting. Even if the display resolution didn't improve, having a better touch screen and bigger size would already be tempting.

@WesFX

As weird as it may be, I really don't use my DS to have a console when I go on trips or in the subway or something, but when I'm having coffee with my parents for example or whenever I have something I can use it next to. Be it gaming, painting or learning something. My mum for example uses the DS to play Layton next to watching TV if it's something that's not demanding full attention. There's probably more people out there that use it like that than one might think.

Check out Art Academy! It has GREAT drawing abilities, with different types of pencils/erasers/brushes, the ability to specify flat or vertical pencil placement, mixing colors, dabbing the brush in water, etc.

It's a great program, you can save your images and upload them straight to facebook!

Funny how Nintendo and Sony are going in opposite directions... PSPGo is a tiny little thing and Nintendo is going bigger in size...

@gLitterbug

I think you hit it right on the head... Nintendo knows their audience very well, just look at their ads, Phoebe, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, etc. all using their DS in the living room, sofa or place of leisure. Although I'm not saying that you won't see people on the bus or subway on their DS, I think portable handhelds are more and more becoming portable consoles.

Damn thats a big ass screen! Those definitly look appealing but I think im going to stick with my original dsi. I would much rather have a handheld that atleast can fit in my pocket. The ds is meant to be mobile and this seems to be countering that. Theres 2 different markets of buyers now. Theres one that likes the bigger system for a more at home use or the other who buys it for travel, work etc. Im guessing no one would want to be caught at work or on a plane with a gigantic ds.

Yeah its a series that teaches you how to draw, (people more experience/already artists should just jump into the 2nd one) but it also has a brilliant art work making mode. Yeah, if you do get a DSi totally get that DSiWare!

@rioka

The one for the West is called 'XL' 'LL' is basically what they says for 'XL' in japan, I've learned since this announcement.

Here are some modest things I've painted with Art Academy:

Onsen

Shibuya Girl

I actually took the time to check at the Colors! forum. The DSi has no pressure sensitivity on it's screens. Went ahead, installed and true enough, can't use that function. That's a bit of a bummer... but I still have hope for Inchworm, which is also coming out as DSiWare:

That Art Academy seems to have an interesting paint engine. It really gives off a traditional materials feel.

I am not sure if you mean the DSi only has no pressure sensivity or the DS in general, but I know that Colors! has a kind of pseudo-pressure sensitivity algorithm. The DS touch screen is only single-touch, but it can calculate a mean if you put pressure on two points. Like seen in a puzzle in Hotel Dusk, where you have to press two levers at the same time and it actually works because they know where the mean has to end up if you push the right places.

@gLitterbug

According to the forum webmaster, they haven't been able to enable pressure sensitivity for the DSi specifically.
As one of the improvements of their upcoming version, they tout better screen sensitivity even at edges and corners. So I'm thinking they optimized or changed the algorithm significantly. I guess hope is still alive for me to get my digital Moleskine working as I want it to...

I don't really see the point of this tbh. I mean, they just released the DSi a couple of months ago..why didn't they just release this one? Maybe it wasn't ready..but they could have WAITED until it was ready, instead of releasing a smaller one first.=/

Exactly. Nintendo should have just waited to release the DSi XL and price it at $169, instead of segmenting the market with 2 different models.

Now the current DSi is obsolete, and the DS Lite should be discontinued now that there are 2 DSi models out.

I was going to get a DSi, but now I'll just wait and get this DSi XL when it comes out. I don't want to be stuck with an obsolete handheld.
