October 29, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: DSi

"A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi™ system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and preinstalled Nintendo DSiWare™ software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010." - Nintendo spokesperson

Well there you go, now we know that the platform is going to come to North America as well. We're also getting pre-installed software, which is nice. Now...do you import, or wait for NA release?! Thanks to Bestmariofan for the heads up!

Oh yes! I'm waiting because DSiWare and DSi-enhanced/specific software is totally region locked.

I will make sure to set money aside though. This will RULE!

I know I'm not elderly but I can fit that thing in my pocket and I will enjoy using it on the bus.

Is it jsut me, or is Nintendo announcing as many games as they do at a press conference, except without the press conference part?

I mean, we got screens of Epic Mickey, announcement of Excitebike, super coverage of NSMB Wii, and a new DSi model! Only thing that would make it better is news about SMG2 and Other M and some goddam coverage of the new Zelda DS!

Okay let me get something straight...Nintendo didn't want to release different color models of the Wii ,or Wii's with/without hard drives and such because they didnt want to confused the consumer. Yet now with a span of a year we're gonna have 3 different versions of the DS in the marketplace at the same time. This is not suppose to confused the consumer?

I'm glad i held off buying a DSi...I'm in the market for one now ,but ill wait a lil bit longer ,and deal with my gimped DSLite

@Necrochild313

I don't think many people, you included, read or remember why Nintendo said they were making this model.

@MaximoX

The Wii has been out for years less than the DS.

@Chosenoneknuckles

It IS called 'DSi XL'

It's caleld 'DSi LL' in Japan, where LL means XL.

Both, so they don't stone us to death for ruining their ability to violently complain about nothing! :)

@MaximoX

The three models offer very different alternatives:

DS Lite - Plays games and GBA games
DSi - Has cameras, built in web   browser, downloadable apps
DSi XL - Has much larger screens for   elderly gamers who otherwise   wouldn't feel comfortable     with DSi/able to play, comes   with brain age DSiWare

Well, unless you are a gramma squinting at the DS you already have and failing to be able to see it, then that makes sense.

This is, people, for those older people who haven't bought a DS of any kind because they feel they wouldn't be able to see it comfortably. It is a way of getting people who have NOT YET BOUGHT A DS OF ANY KIND TO BUY THEIR FIRST

So they are releasing a new DS only 9 months after the last DS revision? Maybe they can aim to release 2 revisions in one calendar year next time.

And they expect people to pay more for this thing than they are charging for the Wii?

@WiiLikeSportz

I know why it exists.

And I think that's nice for the older generation to have this option (if they are made aware of it through clever targeted marketing)

But as for the rest of us -- especially those who bought a DSi -- it begs the question why anyone should be an early adopter if Nintendo is just going to keep releasing a better version of what people already have a year down the road. That's all.

This DSi is for people who can't see the other DS screens very well. If you want a bigger one to be able to see, than go for it. Nintendo is going after those types of people, not ones who don't have those problems.

Might consider since it would be easier for my eyes.

@Burgers

From what I can tell on these comments over the last year many people have not been early adopters of the DSi. For pretty much precisely these reasons: just waiting to see what happens.

I personally don't mind getting it, but if the financial strain was enough to affect me I probably would just wait it out, not get one. So it's not like anybody is going to be making fun of those who don't have it.

Even less important to upgrade than the DSi, the DSi had DSiWare which you couldn't play without a DSi. This is just bigger, which is cool if you want it.

Also, I imagine you could just trade in your old system for this if you wanted and get a good deal for it.

I have a DSi and don't feel bad... 'screwing' early adopters?

What about MS and Sony? Those systems cost 50% of what they used to.

I bet the majority of people here saying Nintendo has screwed the early adopters don't have a DSi at all.

Why should anyone feel burn? It's getting a cosmetic makeover and the battery life is barely extended by 1-3 hours.

I'm not going to cry (I own a DSi since launch), it's also going to cost more than the regular DSi and people were pissed off about the DSi regular price.

I mean really come on now, shouldn't the non-DSi users be mad about the higher price?

Oh, that sweet pen stylus doesn't fit into a slot in the DSi XL? Hm. Well then I guess that aspect of it isn't quite as exciting as I had thought. Nah, I don't think I'll bother upgrading. My DSi doesn't get as much playtime as my consoles anyway.

So is Nintendo really going to keep three products in the portable market?

I assumed the DSi and DSi XL would be the only options going forward, since those systems offer better* anti-piracy protection than the standard DS Lite. Of course, I also didn't believe the rumor about a bigger version of DS coming until it was confirmed.

@MARIOLEE

You know this helps them, that way Microsoft can't gather all their viral marketers to smear competitors as easily as they could before.

It's not as exciting for us, but it's a little bit better in the long run. The way people first see a product matters, so it's probably either gonna stay that way or they'll try something else.

I still think they'll leave it if they don't have an absolutely fantastic E3 next year, and by that I don't mean the part they're in control of, but the highly manipulated outcomes. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if they eventually decided to only make random announcements online like they did with the Wii's name.

I'm glad I held out, but unless

A) My DS Phat breaks;
B) A new DSi exlcusive game is released that is awesome; and/or
C) It comes out in a better red

I ain't getting one. It's interesting, and I'll get one eventually, but I'mma save money for now.

This will sell like mad in Japan I'm sure, but here in North America, who knows. Most old people are very frugal with their money. I still know a lot that have yet to upgrade from VCR to DVD. Or upgrade TV's. Or computers. Or cellphones. See where I'm going with this? THEY ARE SO GOING TO BUY THIS BECAUSE IT'S LONGTERM VALUE IS EXCEPTIONAL!

:|

Who knows, maybe I'll be wrong, but why would they buy this when they can spend another $150-$200 on a decent laptop (assuming it launches in the US with a $200+ price point)? Or spend $50 and get a DVD player? After seeing it, I have a little little interest in it, but nothing major.

If Nintendo announced the European launch date first, it had to mention the North American launch soon. Both Europe and North America are major markets for Nintendo, but at least Westerners will know when the DSi XL will be released. First Quarter 2010 is January 1st to the end of March. The actual launch dates for the DSi XL is yet to be announced.

Because it has a bigger screen and a better stylus. I don't care about portability in the handheld. I never take them with me when I go out. This is just BETTER for me, personally.

If this is the same price as the DSi like it is going to be in Japan then I will feel burned. Bigger screens and a longer battery life (especially since the battery life decreased from the DSLite) for the same price a year after the DSi was released is a slap in the face.

Oh well, Nintendo will probably release the next iteration of the DS in a year or two anyways.

Is the price of the DSi XL $200? If so then that also makes it the same price as the PSP Entertainment Packs.

Which offers a better value?
DSi XL ($199?)
- bigger screens (4 inches)
- better battery life than current DSi
- pre-installed software
- longer stylus

PSP 3000 (PSP Slim) ($169)
- smaller than original PSP
- brighter screen with better clarity
- microphone
- battery life is the same
- Entertainment Packs come with a game, Memory Stick, and movie voucher for $199

It's hard to choose...
