October 30, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Nintendo in general, DSi

When we compare the LCD screen size, Nintendo DSi LL has a screen 93% larger than that of Nintendo DS Lite and 67% larger than that of Nintendo DSi. When you only hear about this feature, you may wonder if the bigger screens are the only difference or whether Nintendo is launching a Nintendo DS for seniors only. Nintendo does not offer new product for such limited purposes only. Nintendo DSi LL features not only bigger monitor screens, but an improved view angle on the screens to make it the first portable system that can be enjoyed with people surrounding the gamer. Many people see portable video game device as the device that can be played by yourself wherever you are. In fact, portable video game systems so far have been developed by prioritizing the portable nature and single-player modes. Due to cost restraints, monitor screens had to be small, and LCD could not provide a beautiful view from an angle, so portable video game machines were structurally confined to game plays by a single player. So far, when people play with portable video games with their friends, they generally need to have a corresponding number of portable game systems and connect them wirelessly. Of course, we will further promote such a play style that has been widely spread by Nintendo DS, but Nintendo DSi LL is going to offer a new play style where those who are surrounding the game player can also join in one way or the other to the game play. - Satoru Iwata

Now Nintendo is worried about others being able to see what you're playing while you're playing it. Where was this style of thinking just a few months back when the DSi was launched!?

I don't understand the complaints about this new model running around the net...it's not like nintendo is forcing you to buy it and it just haves a bigger screen, that's all...

if for you a bigger screen makes a better handheld just get a psp and shut up o.o

My only question: Can devs make games specifically for the larger screens that would be unplayable on a normal DSi? If not, then I don't really care which one I have.

I might buy a DSI but when I had my lite my games didn't really appeal to me maybe it was because the screens were small and I like home consoles more. This might change the way I play.

I'm still not sure if I want this but I like the idea of larger screens with better view angle.

Oh. I didn't catch that the 93% figure was comparing with the lite. It did seem a little much for a change that didn't seem all that big.

Does anyone else feel like this a stab at the PSP Go's smaller screen?

@rawkergirl

The screens have the same amount of pixels so you can't do more with them.

Welp, so much for the argument that "it's not for us" so we shouldn't complain about it.

Well, duh. Quite honestly, I'd like them to continue to do so in future. Great ambition but poor execution in that area led to stuff like the Lynx, the GameGear or even the PSP 1000.

I figured as much, but I still thought I should ask just in case. Thanks. ^_^

the more pr i read about this dsi ll, the less i like it. if it truely isn't just for older gamers, what the hell was the point of the dsi release? oh, and why is there such a discrepancy in the battery life. it seems like they used their legion of early adopter fans (ie me) to test the original, and now the definitive version is going to be released. i feel the same way i did when i bought the ds day one, only to see the lite released months later.

oh, and i won't buy the new one, because they'll never switch my dsi ware over. this is stupid. i hereby renounce my early adopter status. won't be doing that again, nintendo, you've burned me three times this gen.

It seems that Nintendo is trying to imitate the home console experience with the DSi XL because it has larger screens. The idea of multiplayer by having players use only one handhand is something I never thought of before.

As for the LCD screen, it is true that producing them involve a high cost as they are not easy to produce and strict manufacturing standards are put in place to remove flawed screens. The large LCD screens may be the reason why the DSi XL will be selling in Japan for 20,000 yen.

:lol: EXACTLY what I was going to post. It's so freakin' obvious that this wasn't just for the elderly. So much for that PR message.

Apparently Nintendo wants the DSi LL to be put on a table or something where everyone in the family can have access to it. That's why it will come with a dictionary along with the 2 brain age games. Nintendo is looking to position it as something useful to have in the house.

The bigger screens makes it easier to consult when you're with somebody.

This DS is certainly for me... I hate those small screens. Probably why I've never been to crazy for handhelds.

I'm buying it.

Although it really does kinda piss me off. I just bought my DSi (at a discount, at least) primarily for DSiWare.
Had I known this was coming out, I'd have held off. Now...I have no reason to download anything on DSiWare :(

The reason I bought the DSi was because the screens were so much bigger than the DS Phat's screens. Of course, these are almost double the size of that.
...I hate small screen sizes!

Let me make it simple for you all...

[1.] You dont care for a larger screen and have a DSlite...Stick with it[You can always upgrade to the DSi]

[2.] If you already bought a DSi and don't want a DSiXL stick with it. You never have to upgrade to the XL as you get the same experience just with 67%smaller screen and all that better viewing angle blah...(although that is pretty nice upgrade to the screens...hope that makes outdoor gaming in the sunlight better too?...)
Never-the-less you still have a DSi with the same spec upgrade from DSlite in terms of hardware power and the cameras, DSiWare blah blah blah.

[3.] Depending on your need and gaming habits you may be absolutely fine owning a DSLite and also for multiplayer the games will be supported still on DSiXL, DSi with all previous DS.

Only when specific DSi carts for the (i) and (XL) come will you be alienated.

But once again that will depend on your specific gaming habits.

If it is someone who literally only plays brain training and professor layton and wha have you...them not owning a DSi wont matter really.

Just that they may be missing out on new experiences of their DSLite games on the newer hardware...which is all part of the game pardon my pun to eventually get you to upgrade and make you see the benefits the new system brings rather than shun it.

But the point is you do not have to purchase a DSiXL and furthermoe that goes for DSi.

The DS original and DSlite havea vast vast library guys we all know this don't we? Excusing all the fun new features and things the i and XL will bring there is no doubt the original DSs still are supreme portable gaming consoles.

Having several choices of one thing isn't a bad thing you know.

So, choose wisely to suit yourselves ;)

By the way in case you are wondering and havn't seen any of my previous commentary regarding the XL....I WANT IT NOW! IN BLACK OR BLUE!

PSP sized screens on the DS...TWO? Are yo kidding me? I will sell my Lite and PHat for that baby.

lol

Wow. I never thought Nintendo would try to position this as something for everyone instead of an alternate option for those who don't like the standard DSi.

Oh well. Either way, I don't get why people are having a hissy fit about this. Simple: Don't buy it. Sone people act like it is a requirement to buy every product with Nintendo's name on it.

Instead of releasing the current DSi first and then the XL a mere 9 months later, Nintendo should have simply released the DSi XL as a standalone unit and priced it at $169.

Now Nintendo is further segmenting their market the way Sony, Apple, and Microsoft have done.

We don't need multiple versions of the same handheld!

This reminds me of when Nintendo had the original Game Boy in 1989, then came out with the Game Boy Pocket in 1993, then after 10 years of black and white portable gaming, they finally came out with the Game Boy Color in 1998. They could have made things much easier by making the Game Boy Pocket have a colorized screen.

I also find it interesting that Nintendo has a history of making their handhelds smaller to make them more pocket-friendly.

Game Boy->Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Advance->Game Boy Micro
DS->DS Lite

But now they are going in the opposite direction and making the DSi BIGGER?

They should have just kept the old DS Phat if they wanted to sell a bigger handheld.

That's like Sony taking the PSP Slim and re-releasing the PSP Fat a year later.

I don't even think there is any real reason to get a DSi, never mind this...

Software is what is inevitably going to sell these systems, not the size of the screen.
