October 30, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general, DSi

"It appears to be geared toward people who want the latest model of every device, people who have difficulty reading, and people who can't hold a skinny stylus." - Wedbush analyst, Michael Pachter

"Communal gaming, and the very important social utility it drives, will likely come from people sharing the same experience, but on their own personal screens, like with FaceBooks games or local WiFi gaming. While the DS has definitely found a niche among older and other non-traditional gamers, I'm not sure it'll displace the growing popularity of Netbooks (or iPhones) as the default on-the-go entertainment/information platform. Especially as basic Netbooks fall below the $300 mark (or less with subsidized mobile broadband plans), and Netbook-friendly apps, such as FaceBook games, skyrocket in popularity." - Dan Ackerman, senior editor at Cnet.com

We know how some of the industry feels, but how do you guys feel? Do you think Nintendo's move to displace the DSi already is a smart move, or uncalled for?

Uncalled for. As far as I can recall, they plan to release a new portable sometime soon, so this "enlargement" should have come to the initial DSi, in the first place. Issues with readability were already found on Lite, so I don't think there's much excuse there.

What Pachter says make sense, even the skinny stylus part.

I like it and at the same time see it as unneeded. They can say how it's for the older crowd with eye trouble all they want with the PR, but it's really just to milk the DS brand even more.

I personally wish they would just release a blank DS cartridge with 2 GB on it that gives, say DS Lite owners, access to DSi Ware. I know they can't because of all of the account problems that would occur and DSi Ware is for the DSi, but not all games use the DSi camera and could work on the regular DS. :|

I partially agree with the second guy that it may interest the crown being intrigued by netbooks. I've mentioned that before, but like I said at the time, unless they double the RAM (at least), the DSi is almost useless for even basic browsing.

On the flipside, I expect them to announce some kind of ebook store early next year just before its release...

Why don't people think that there are people that cannot play on Ds/Dsi because they cannot read the game's text and need a bigger screen to do that?

Same. The XL/LL isn't meant to be a big deal, otherwise Nintendo might've put something into announcing it. Just an alternate version of the DSi for those people that don't care about portability as much as view-ability. Thing is, there's now going to be three versions of DS on the market, which Nintendo said only confused customers before.

i don't think tomodachi collection will be popular in the us and europe. Of course i thought the same thing about nintendogs. But given the layton treatment , at least it won't be that popular in the usa. So i don't really see the need for the dsll in america .
They clearly stated that those two games friends collection and layton for the justification of the ds xl. And the home ds will never fly .

I'm hoping this is not a brand new ds that could be called 2. Because that on the other hand , if it have the necessary power and the traditional autonomy of nintendo producs, well that would be a great great product . It could even steal marketshare from ipod or netbook. Not really marketshare but at least more people would/could use the internet from it , or play media on it.
Then again nearly all mp3player already play most of available media .

Steal market share from netbooks? I severely doubt it. The system still has the same RAM as the other DS units. Netbooks don't get the word net for nothing. This isn't the DS Net. Plus, the long term value isn't exceptional. Even with that, I would take a laptop over a netbook to be honest. Better value and you can get a good laptop for a good price.

The things I hate about the DS XL is that it's larger, yet they didn't make the buttons larger, and they didn't decide to add the GBA slot back in!

Overall, this system is useless. I'm perfectly fine with my Phat, and DS Lite. Bring on DS2 or whatever the next handheld is, no more DS redesigns!

It doesn't matter to me. The standard DSi is the more attractive device for me. I think it's silly that people get mad that Nintendo is releasing it, though. Who cares? You have the choice to either buy it or not.

How exactly does an Analyst and a Journalist qualify as "Industry members"? Seriously, this is part of the problem - developers and publishers are the Videogame industry, analysts and journalists are not, no matter how much they might *want* to be.

The XL is an improvement because the one downside the DS has is the small screens. Now I just wish they would release a DS that you can connect to the TV just like the E3 test systems which are like proper home consoles. I mean when you double the size of an extremely small screen it doesn't really help much, does it? You'll still be playing everything alone in it 'cause nobody can see what you're doing.

DSi XL Pros:
- seemingly improved battery life
- longer stylus
- larger screens
- pre-installed software

DSi XL Cons:
- more expensive than current DSi
- looks way too bulky

About that price, why doesn't Nintendo just drop the price of the DS Lite to $99, the current DSi to $129, and put the DSi XL at $169?

That makes a lot more sense than having the DSi XL priced the same as a Wii...
