November 1, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

While the Big N isn't losing money, they did see a drop in profits, and have revised their forecast accordingly. One thing's for sure, there's plenty of things that Nintendo needs to take into account for the future. If they want to squeeze the most they can out of DS and especially Wii, they're going to have to change tactics. It already seems like Nintendo knows they need to step things up on the software side, but what else can be done?

Nintendo is the only company that can turn over a billion dollars in profit in less than a year and people still say that they are doomed.

They should use some of that 9 billion USD battle chest they have saved away to buy up Capcom or something. They're certainly asking for it, and Nintendo will give Megaman a good home alongside Samus and Mario.

Gotta say this a great article. It gives you a pretty clear picture of Nintendo's current situation. Their problems, way's they can find and enforce solutions, and their future.

It saddened me deeply when I read at the end some franhises dwindling in popularity and seeing Zelda mentioned.

Zelda has and always will be my favorite Nintendo franchise, I just hope Spirit Tracks will be able to re-kindle the Zelda flame in me. It's been nearly 2 whole years since a zelda title and if nintendo releases Zelda Wii by next year that would be a 4 year gap between console Zelda titles which is pretty huge.

Here's hopin' that both upcoming Zelda titles will blow minds and Nintendo's success continues. I don't care how well they do financially or how wide of a market they can catar to...as long as they keep producing quality games...I'm one happy gamer. :)

they need to focus on high quality software, better internet support, and educating the people who already own hardware about the first two.

the hardware battle is won, but they still can't find the right strategy for the software.

@bobyoko

agree

i feel like they feel the need to continue to expand the market even more which I'm afraid is what the vitality sensor could be for.
I think Nintendo can only expand it so much more without sacrificing some of their intall base. It can only expand on it's own from here on out and they should focus more on what bobyoko stated.

Agree.

Thats are the things that nintendo need to do for the 2010. Also, maybe they need to fired some people from NOA (reggie and cammie).

It's all about software, software, software and more software.

Quality software obviously. And 3rd parties need to stop being wussies.

@Barto

Why shouldn't they expand it? And why are you so afraid of the Vitality Sensor? I mean, we are getting Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M, plus certainly a couple unannounced games. I wouldn't say Nintendo is sacrificing some of their install base.

@Barto

Hm. It really doesn't feel like 2 years since a Zelda title. It would explain my strange, strong urge to replay Phantom Hourglass recently. But with Spirit Tracks so close, it's just not my style, unlike the people that always play the previous Zelda in anticipation of a new one.

@Jonath

it's not that they shouldn't, but it seems to me that they just want to keep on expanding, and there's nothing wrong with that, but the wider your audience is, the harder it is to cater to all of it.
But hey, if nintendo really thinks they can do it, more power to them. :)
And about the vitality sensor; All I'm saying is that I hope it doesnt go the way of the Zapper, and hopefully Nintendo created the device with both it's casual and core audiences in mind.

@WexFX

What's wrong with playing a Zelda title right before the release of a new one? :) I do it all the time and with other games too. Not just Zelda.

Nintendo, if you do this:

Software + marketing = profit!

your problems are solved.

I don't know, the ds already feels dead. and though i want bigger screens, the timing and lack of doing it right, really hurts the appeal of the system.

i'm ready to move on to something new and something better. the problem for nintendo is they wont want to leave the whole "DS" idea behind, but honestly, i haven't really seen 2 screens as a must, or even a fun way to play. there are that many games where 2 screens actually mattered.

it was nice to have the start screen at the bottom, but do we really need it? games like nano stray were cute, but that was nothing that bigger, wider screens couldn't fix.

so not only is the DS system on its last leg, but the DS concept has run its course as well.

honestly nintendo should pull that "3rd pillar" idea out of their backsides again and keep the DS for GBA+ games (which is what it's pretty much used for already), and create a new system (portable gamecube with mini discs) to create more of a psp, console on the go style of gaming.

nintendo could completely kick sony in the teeth by doing that. treat the system as a console, not the portable gaming idiocy we see today. you know, games have to be smaller, shorter, cuter versions of console gaming, no, just make games for it.

and by portable, that doesn't mean it HAS to fit into jr's pocket either. i mean a laptop is portable too, i'm not saying go that big, but come on, portable dvd players are 7 to 8 inches worth of screen. lets see some real gaming on the go, and stop worrying about going on the gaming.

take all the preconceived ideas about what a "portable game should be" and just start making games.
