November 3, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

The Xbox 360 had solid sales, but they have not been enough to give Microsoft anywhere near a breakout market position. In many respects, Sony was saved by the success of the Wii. - DFC Intelligence

So basically, the Wii's success was enough to keep the 360 from killing off the PS3. If the Wii wasn't the huge success that it has been, the PS3 may have had even less of a chance to survive.

That doesn't make any sense. Nobody buys a PS3 for the motion controls.

That's a stretch of the imagination.

If the Wii didn't exist, more people would've bought the PS3. Sure many more would've gotten the Xbox but the PS3 wouldn't have died.

@Hami83

Yes, but 360 would *according to the them* have more exclusives, since the analogy would be godlike unbalanced.

Right now, PS3 and X360 get a lot of multiplatform games just due to the fact that these games need to sell, and putting them in both consoles makes them sell enough.

I dunno, I guess.

I would guess most Wii owners would have gravitated towards the 360 or the handhelds rather than the PS3, which was, you know, 599USD at launch.

I think the system failures saved the PS3.

It could be a contributing factor, but I'm not sure it was the overall saving grace for the PS3.

The system has a 50% failure rate. People are going to say screw that. Also the Japanese hating the 360 helped it too.

Lots of things "hurt" the 360, the failures definitely being not the least of which.

The utterly laughable lack of a Japanese marketing strategy is what killed it in Japan. The 360 is, however, GALACTICALLY more successful than the original Xbox in terms of market penetration and market share. Not only has it managed to secure exclusives, it has managed to STEAL PS3 exclusives.

I think we ought to look at it like this - if not for the Wii (and of course its terrible pricing), who knows whether or not the PS3 would've taken the number one spot? The Wii saving the PS3 is a tough argument to sell for me, as it offered gamers who were disenchanted with Sony's strategy a way out - get a 360 and a Wii, end up spending the same money as you would on a PS3 alone, and receive an overall better gaming experience.

Had the PS3 been $299 from day one, it would've probably would've done FAR better than third place. The recent "resurgence" of the PS3 is due to that price cut and redesign alone, not due to any problem with the 360 or Wii. Games are still the weak point of the PS3, and it's a problem they'll need to overcome if they want any real measure of success.

Wow, I'm shocked at how many people disagree with this statement!

Not trying to be a fanboy or anything, but realistically, the 360 was reigning supreme when the Wii and PS3 started out. The PS3's price point was killing it almost as soon as it got out of the starting gate.

The Wii is much more on level with the 360 than the PS3, so they stepped in and took a ton of sales from the 360. That gave the PS3 some chance to recuperate and make up for losses. Now that they have showed themselves as being more reliable and a better value, the PS3 is really taking off.

... of course the almost 50% fail rate of the 360 really helped as well.

"he Wii is much more on level with the 360 than the PS3, so they stepped in and took a ton of sales from the 360."

Wha? The 360 sells pretty much the same every month (except for a few spikes for holidays etc.), which was not the case for the PS3 for a long time. PS3 and 360 are eating each other with very little effect on Nintendo sales since the beginning (that's what the whole Nintendo not competing thing is).

@Wiggymaster

That's a pretty big if though. That would be like the PS3 not including Blu-Ray. And when it came out, considering how the library was lacking and the Blu-Ray option was definitely helping for early sales, I don't think it would have seen a big boost. Obviously the price would have helped a lot, but then the 360 could have been at that price too.

So really we can't say how it could have done.

Yes the $599 price point hurt the PS3 severely, but Sony soon made up for that with rapid price cuts and model revisions.

The Slim PS3 priced at $299 is when things really took off. Now the 360 and PS3 are pretty much even.

And games are no longer a weak point of the PS3.

In case you haven't noticed, Sony has been putting tons of exclusives on the PS3:
- Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
- Uncharted 2
- Resistance: Fall of Man
- Resistance 2
- Ratchet and Clank FUTURE: Tools of Destruction
- Ratchet and Clank FUTURE: A Crack in Time
- Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
- Heavenly Sword
- Killzone 2
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm
- MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
- Infamous
- all the PSN exclusives
- PS1 Classics

Upcoming exclusives:
- Heavy Rain
- God of War 3
- The Last Guardian
- ModNation Racers
- Gran Turismo 5 (the full game)

Also, most multiplatform games are on both Xbox 360 and PS3.

So a lack of games is no longer a valid complaint. Yes, the Xbox 360 may sell more games than the PS3, but that is due to industry hype and fanboyism.

That's because there are still more 360s than PS3s out there and until recently they were always slightly better on 360.

I think what the article was saying was that in the beginning of this generation if you take the wii out of the equation it leaves you with just two options. Ps3 and 360. 360 launched early, had great exclusives, was consistently receiving games that were assumed ps3 exclusives. Not to mention price factor, xbl, etc.

But with the wii... it made the choices more difficult. Things weren't so black and white. I really agree with the claim (although I haven't read the article in it's entirety yet) In the beginning everyone was saying wii or 360 (or some combination with handhelds) ... In a world without wii... the choices would have just been narrowed down to "one"... 360.
