November 3, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

“I really think the new price point is going to open up the Wii to new people. I actually think it's going to have a holiday where maybe people who weren't willing to buy it at $249 are willing to at $199. So I think there are new people who are going to come into this category. There's been a lot of development from third parties on the Wii platform this year, so there are a lot of games available to choose from. We expect it to be a solid platform for us going into the holiday season; this is really the time of year when Wii accelerates. With the reduced price point they've made it extremely affordable. We have high expectations for that title. We think it's going to be a strong seller for the holiday. It reminds you of those endearing Nintendo titles of old, and anyone who's played those and really enjoyed them will be flocking to this game. I think we'll have very strong sales on that title and our reservations do support that." - Tony Bartel, Executive VP of Merchandising and Marketing for GameStop

I wonder what we're going to be seeing with New Super Mario Bros. Wii sales about a year from now. Is it going to follow the long-tail success of the DS original, or are Wii consumers going to ignore the title shortly after launch?

I don't know if it will have as long of a tail as NSMB Wii, but it will sell consistently well for a while at least. I could be wrong. I knew NSMB DS would be a huge success but I don't think anyone knew it would sell like it has for this amount of time. It's mind boggling.

We should be seeing commercials this week. But I bet the commercials will be a let down. I still liked my idea of a kid playing the original Mario Bros on NES and then the game "evolving" over the years and then it shows a grown man (the kid but as an adult) playing NSMBWii and then his kids jump in and play with him.

... Well, NSMBWii will really determine the fate of Nintendo this year, eh? A little risky, putting all their chips on one game....

@Klonoa

Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort are also games that will sell well this holiday season. This isn't a repeat of last year.

Do you guys watch INVISIBLE WALLS?: Apparently (i agree to an extent, NOW) 360 and PS3 will kill off Wii in 12 months time? (2010 all consoles will have motion (motion+HDgraphics for PS360 = Win? ps360 lol)....unless Nintendo upgrade to HD integrate motion plus into the controller so we can get games like borderland and all the latest games WITH motion controls ...and ALL the other big releases that go multiplatform. THE GAMES THAT MATTER TO THE CORE.
IF ONLY... tsk.

Nintendo with all their sucess cannot claim "victory" this gen if the Wii doesnt fulfill it's promise as an ALL ACCESS GAMING CONSOLE!

Which means not only the mini-game loving casuals are happy...but how motion controls really change gaming for the CORE AUDIENCE...

Bah they probably don't care anyway they have made bajillions even with their recent profit drop first in like 6 years?!

The twin HD beast take money and time to dev for...what resources are going to be left to develop for somthing twice as powerful as a Gamecube...and to push THAT tech(ah just cop out and put it on rails that'll look good and sell, w-well)...and to make an engine for every game to suit that tech......not going to happen is it.

It is sad to sad but with a few gems sprinkled here and there...the awesomeness of the Wii controller has been heavily underutilised in MOST (not all) thus far at best this gen(3 years in)...with or without motion+

I know motion+ is only recent but the point is...its started ...but there is still shovelware...devs need to make games for the Wii hardware, for the platform not toss code here and add waggle...but then again this is the way it should have been 1,2 years ago...its too late now (insert core games bombing sales figures here-i dont need to list them do i?)

The Wii has such a bad track record now from the getgo of what devs did with it (with that certain core crowd) that too many think it doesn't exist/last-gen in their eyes or it is a kiddy toy...while the others are apparently the most cool mature things ever made.....(simply because of software...what games on the other two right now vs what's on the Wii right now......

We have all heard the dust off the Wii comment and that resonates throughout the entire industry and gaming population....

It's sad because back in 2005 when i first saw the controller I was super excited not only for oh minigames that kids and seniors can join in and play...My imagination was going wild for one specific genre or genres of games...FPS OR Action adventure.
I cant say the Wii market has a vaaaast array of that, that really show off what this controller can do for core games. There is a list, no doubt there are some game changers, but it is a few and far between thing after 3 years...all the rest is either crap shovelware or half assed gimps, hardly anything to make a core gamer who probably owns a 360/PS3 to want to dust off the Wii for playing the same game in HD with regular gamepad controls(IF said multiplatform game even has a Wii release : ( ). and that is most likely the better version(PS360).

Yet come next year both Sony and MS join in motion so to speak...you will see devs churn out game after game after game with motion controls (core games too) and the poor Wii has been suffering for 3 years...the console that bucked the trend in the first place.
Then all these core gamers will be boasting about these "NEW" controls and oh its so immersive AND, AND in HD graphics and its the best thing ever.(bettaaaaaar dan der lame Wii...i can hear them now, ugh.)

Poor poor Wii, tsk, tsk. You have 12 months to go...until ra
mpant third party hiatus. Sound familiar? That was the death knell of the big brother Gamecube...
Need, I say more?

12 months...the clock is ticking...and don't forget one more price drop for 360/PS3 WITH HD AND MOTION...where will our little ol Wii be even then...

Poor poor Wii... tsk.

@GWXworld

Nice regurgitation of all the Wii FUD from the last couple of years.

If it's such a toy, then why did Warren Spector want to develop specifically for it?

A large number of HD games are multiplatform, but the motion controls for the 360 and PS3 will be very very different. Their motion controls will have less of an impact than you're wildly claiming.

I'm definitely going to buy a Wii at $200. I don't have much disposable income right now, so a game system that is $200 or less is perfect for me. And I'm sure plenty of people would agree.

Plus, you have to factor in games, controllers, batteries, etc.

@guttertalk

Sony's motion controller is a direct copy of the Wii Remote. Both use accelerometers.

The only difference is that is uses a camera for more precise tracking.

Microsoft's Project Natal is not a controller, it's a camera that is very similar to Sony's EyeToy and PSEye. The only big difference is Natal uses infrared cameras, while Sony's cameras don't.
