"What we found when we tested the movie a few weeks ago, and it tested extraordinarily high which surprised me because I always think these things are going to fail but this one turned out great; the women were a surprise because I thought we made a terrific movie for the boys because the girl is beautiful but the women flipped over this film. I've never had a score where the parents, there is violence, too, because it's PG-13, but the parents rated the film a hundred percent with an excellent or very good which has never happened before. So it's one of these movies that we know they'll take their children to go see it which is a huge advantage for a film, that parents can say, 'Hey, it's cool. My kid can see it.'" - Jerry Bruckheimer
I have to admit that I thought the trailer was quite good. I think the project is definitely going to be the best video game-to-movie adaptation yet, but that's not really saying much.

"a fun, popcorn romp... the best video game-to-movie adaptation yet" -Kevin Cassidy, GoNintendo
That's partly the reason why video game movies fail.
Doom, Resident Evil, House of the Dead, Mortal Kombat, etc etc etc. They all strayed so very far from the games they were just cliche action movies.
This however, like many people have pointed out seem to use A LOT of the material from the game, which is really good.
My opinion is from the trailer only, so it could still suck, but it looks like to me that it'll be at least worth a watch.
I mean, little kids can be there, whatever, but little 2-3 year olds? Dark movies for them I would think. Plus when they begin to scream or cry... That really bugs me for a reason.
That's why I go see movies early in the day, when school is in session or they are in daycare.
I don't think anyone expects a movie to be like a game. Any normal person would know that it would be impossible to transfer a game fully to a movie.
Just like a game couldn't easily be a book, or a book a movie without changing some things.
He made a point about having to give the prince a name in the movie though, even though he doesn't have one in the games.
You are right about Doom, House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Super Mario Bros., etc.
But there are a few exceptions:
Mortal Kombat doesn't have much of a plotline. Yes the characters each have their own backstories, so the film's writers basically wrote the plot around that. The fight scenes were good. My favorite was the one between Liu Kang and Sub Zero, even though it was short.
MK: Annihilation was horrible. It was like one of those s*** Sci-Fi Channel movies, only on the big screen. And most of the first movie's actors were replaced. Christopher Lambert as Raiden FTW!
Resident Evil was decent. It used the game's theme as a plotline (Umbrella Corp., T Virus, zombies), but everything else was just typical Hollywood filler. And just who is Alice?
Silent Hill was amazing, it really captured the dreary atmospheric tension of the games. The only part of the movie I hated was the church scene at the end.
Never saw Tomb Raider, so I can't comment.
