November 5, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

Since our division has been reviewing and developing a number of hardware, we are looking into many different things, including HD and SD. Also included is the review over the systems with which the creators can easily create video games with limited budget and resources. However, we have not come to the stage where we can announce which is the most appropriate means. Since an increasing number of the TV sets at home around the world are becoming HD today, it will be natural for a machine to be able to generate graphics that people will be accustomed to see on HD televisions. Since the ordinary TV programs are now shifting to HD, moving to HD appears to me a natural flow. - Genyo Takeda (General Manager, Integrated Research & Development Division)

I have no doubt that Nintendo's next console will be HD, but I don't know if the Wii will get an HD version. You never know what Nintendo is going to do with their hardware revisions. I never expected the DSi LL, so I guess a Wii HD isn't out of the question!

Uh, duh, you already have it. It's called WiiWare and DSiWare, just make the systems and restrictions you made less retarded.

@Hami83

Wiiware devkits and development costs almost the same as full retail development. So no, they don't have it.

That's Genyo Takeda, head of Nintendo's R&D Division. ;)

I personally hope they go right to the next console, even if it's not backward compatible with Wii. Simply addding HD to the Wii but no extra power to make more powerful games is kinda a waste.

Of course, a next, stronger console with HD that is also backward compatible with Wii would be great.

I'm expecting a 'HD killer' [most likely this '3D' fad cropping up everywhere] in two or three years time [i.e. the time when at least Nintendo's next console will come out], so Nintendo's presumed SD/HD console will be left at the wayside by the industry and Nintendo fans I whole heartily believe.

@Tendonin

I was wondering when that would be bought up.

They should have done the SD/HD with the Wii 3 years ago...

@shadowbuster

Considering HD was still rather expensive and not exactly sporting a high adoption rate back then, your statement only would've likely translated into SD/HD resolution[s] compatible, not SD/HD resolutions and graphics like you wish, ya know. ;-)

Thus the Wii would still be where its at today in the minds of gamers and the industry at large.

@shadowbuster

Yeah, and the Wii would be even more expensive than the PS3. That's the main reason for the Wii not having HD.

@BigLord

Funny, the Xbox 360 was only $300/$400 at launch. That is less than the PS3's price of $500/$600.

I love it how they just refuse to commit to full HD for the next system.

It'll be just like the online features of the Wii this generation: Somewhat, but not fully there.

This is Genyo Takeda, Nintendo's hardware guy. If he was eccentric enough to link two monitors to bring us the Original Punch-Out!! there isn't a doubt in my mind HD tickles his fancy.

After all, he was the one that suggested the Wii could connect to both a TV screen and a computer monitor (ignore VGA boxes for a second there).
