This is absolutely unbelievable. A few months back, we heard that Venezuela was going to discuss the option of banning the import/sale/production of video games, as well as toy weapons. Now here we are, and the law has been laid down. In three months' time, this law will indeed be in effect. One Venezuelan gamer has spoken out on this ridiculous action.

This law makes selling video games to anybody actually worse than giving real guns or cigarettes to a minor, or even forcing him or her to work, as you get less jail time and lower fines if you do any of those things. ...These games are a cherished part of my life, they helped to shape my young mind, they gave me challenges and vastly improved my English, opening the door to a whole new world of literature, music and people from all around the world. Now, thanks to the tiny horizons of the cast of morons who govern me, thanks to the stupidity and ham-fisted authoritarianism of the local authorities, so beloved of so many liberals, my 7 year old brother's chances to do the same could be greatly impacted. ...But I'd rather go to jail than betray the gamer culture, partially responsible for making me the person I am today.

I can't think of any grosser misrepresentation of video games in my entire lifetime.

I'm from Venezuela and I still can't believe this... by the way it's "violent videogames" as far as I know... but hey, who determines what's violent or not????
there's violence in most games even on the mario series

That's pretty ridiculous. D:

I mean, I can see banning extremely violent games (Ala GoW (Both games that use the term), Madworld, etc) and all, but what about harmless games like Galaxy and MKWii? And to a lesser extent, Brawl?

It seems to me like the Venezuelan government didn't want to have to deal with the whole regulating which games are acceptable and which games aren't so they just said "Forget it" and laid down the banhammer. Man, that's gotta stink for the Venezuelan gamers. D:

Fro~

PS: Although that last bit there may be going a bit too far... rather go to jail than betray gaming culture? I'm as big a gamer as the rest of them, but that's going a bit too far, I think.

man, that sucks massively. sorry to hear it ended up coming to that. even if it is just violent games, that'll still restrict people from basically half the great games coming out.

@akel

somehow most of the people on the National Assembly are a bunch of clowns, who do nothing to improve the poor situation of the country, instead they focus on trivial things to screw over the average citizen

Lot's of gamer love being sent over to Venezuela, I can't believe this and feel for you folks. Sorry Mario threatened your president and elected officials to the point of being driven out of town. :(

Wait, this law actually went into action? What the hell?! Didn't the gamers of this country had a say in this?! This is revolting! Not only it screws people's jobs regarding gaming (retailers etc) it also screws actual gamers, this deserves an uprising.

As if you even knew what the word socialism ment. Ever attended public school, borrowed a library book, or used public transit? Boom, horrible, evil socialism right there. WAKE UP. >_>

I'd like to know who's in power right now. If their government is conservative controlled, that's likey the reason for this rediculous ban.

There's a pretty big difference between using a library and banning videogames. Socialism is always evil unless in the smallest of doses.

I dont know what socialism means? You make no sense. Yeah we have public run institutions but that doesnt make us socialist. Those things are just more efficiently run with the government than what the free market could do. Point is that we are a capitalist society and socialism is where the government provides and decides most of the market outcomes. They do this so its "fair". Well i believe in opportunity over fairness and thats why we are the wealthiest country on this planet. Because of good ol capitalism.

Seriously though, I don't know how many computers there are in Venezuela but it would be impossible to ban video games in America since everyone owns a computer and goes online.

If you truly wish to stop your country's government from banning a harmless activity, the only thing to do is fight it. Do not allow yourselves to be oppresed. Have your voice heard, and make your mark on the pages history, in blood if need be. Your life is worthless the moment you give up the will to cause change. Don't just moan about how the law is unfair; DO something about it.

Of course, I won't be there to help you, because I live in freaking America.
