It's very clear that Epic Mickey is getting a ton of coverage. It's also clear that most people don't bother reading articles before they comment.

In an MSN article about Epic Mickey, many readers latched onto the headline/tagline of the article and nothing else. The headline/tagline reads 'Mickey Mouse gets a face-lift: Disney's updated character will have an edge in the new video game Epic Mickey' People didn't bother to read on and see that Mickey is being taken back to his roots, and that it's up to the player to take on the role of a good or bad Mickey. Just check out some of these comments...

Mickey Mouse is an icon of fun and fantasy...to make him "edgy" by the Walt Disney Company is degrading to their image as a family friendly company...in the long run, this could alienate many Disney followers who spend money for their films, DVD's and theme parks. This may backfire bigtime!!

----------------

What a joke! lol Now Mickey is going to be evil? The world is once again turning to ****!

----------------

Why does everything nowadays have to be angry? From rap music to video games and now this, why is happy considered a bad thing? We need to laugh more, not less.

----------------

This one is my favorite, by far...

Great - a menacing Mickey Mouse. Hey money talks, let's wait and see what happens. Betcha this gets dropped like a hot potato when it gets additional pub in the real world where the silent majority still have some morals and a lot more clout than 'gamers'.

Check out the full article here (thanks jraics!)

They don't have valid arguments if they accuse Mickey of being edgy by getting less facial features...

Newsflash: internet messages boards are full of uninformed kids.

If we report on stories like this and get upset about it, we're just as reactionary as the people posting those comments.

Someone on facebook who is not interested in video games posted a link to an article on epic mickey http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/busin ... ml?_r=1&hp

and wrote not sure...

They just show the image of the scrapper and not the hero mickey so it enrages people. BEsides, classic mickey was not so clean cut...

Classic Mickey Mouse was quite a bastard long before they ripped out his personality.

Disney has always marketed the modern Mickey and classic Mickey on various merchandise. What is the problem? I like the fact that Disney is making an edgy Mickey project. I have the the same feeling for it as I did when I saw Kingdom Hearts back in 2001 (Awesome!).

So what the heck is wrong? People definitely don't know this game. You don't HAVE to make Mickey "Evil", it's all in the players' hands. And I doubt Disneyland is going to suddenly be the "Scariest place on earth".

I don't think it's fair that no one is giving Disney one tiny chance at this darker-side of storytelling. This seems up there with Nightmare Before Christmas. But I mean one game is not going to make the world see mickey as a frightening character.

More like the world's gone to **** because there's so many ignorant people out there.

Still, this is pretty funny :P

First off, it's fun to see what people on the outside think of us "gamers", not to mention the backlash from the gamers themselves. :P

But on the other hand, I'm pretty sure Warren Spector has a deeper passion and understanding of the character than any of these guys.

Umm... Mickey Mouse tried to kill himself at one point in the classic cartoon strips.

Don't these people do their homework?

Lol. I told a friend about it and the first thing he said, without even letting me finish:

"WHAT. That's SOOOO stupid! Mickey can never be cool or evil, that's so dumb!"

and then I actually FINISHED talking:

"Oh. Cool."

XD Some people just don't get it XD

Some of the commenter are really stupid, and the article is too generalized and misleading. Each of the Mickeys you can be represents a stage of Mickey Mouse's character in cartoons. The Scrapper one is an option (not evil and not mandatory, like some people think) based on his earliest, mischievous incarnations. The Wastelander is the later character, who had some good in him but still a touch of troublemaking. And the Hero (who the article forgets to tell about) represents his later, always good and heroic incarnations. Each of them are based on Mickey's past, and it seems like Warren Spector knows way more about the character than these so-called "Mickey-fans" who hardly know anything about his history.

Ahaha. Mickey's not even evil at all, you just have the opportunity to make him focus on himself more than helping everyone as well. Judging a book by its cover is not cool. I mean, how would the average person judge the amazing Kingdom Hearts series?

It's sad that people are reacting this way without bothering to read the article. That said, though, my hunch is that this game is not destined for success. The majority of Mickey fans want something fun and cute, and the "edgy" vibe the developers are trying to give this game will probably be off-putting to them. On the other hand, what are the chances that droves of "hardcore" gamers are going to rush out for a Mickey Mouse game?
