We're in the middle of finalizing the game with the ideas that we've created. Almost entirely new courses...we've added some new abilities for Mario, and the goal is to take the system and the gameplay of the original Super Mario Galaxy and turn it into something that's a little more expanded, and offers a great deal of challenge for people that enjoyed the first game. - Shigeru Miyamoto

Looks like Miyamoto is on a bit of a kick making games tougher. That's completely fine with me, I'm up for the challenge!

How much more can you expand on his abilities? The combination of all possible elements in the first one was perfect and now even more? Like how N-Gamer said:
"There are 3 more points to get a perfect 100 from us. I bet Nintendo knows how to fill em"
Seriously this game is like gob smacking just cause you got a sequel to an almost perfect game.

I'm still not particularly impressed with this game, since it just looks like a Galaxy expansion pack, and he even says "almost entirely new courses", what?

Until I see something besides Yoshi, it's just an expansion pack, really. They should not have made a Galaxy 2, but rather, a new gimmick. Galaxy's story ended on a high note, and made sense (sort of...), and I can't think of a GOOD reason to be back in space.

Once they announce, or leak, Luigi Mode, I'll care blindly.

@nintycool

hcig is referring to how Miyamoto announced a new Zelda long before that, which he did, before E3, but...

@hcig

Zelda being 'announced' by Miyamoto means nothing without evidence. A logo, a picture, something. If Miyamoto says "We are working on Zelda", that means nothing.

They are 'always' "working on Zelda and Mario", so for him to say that, it doesn't actually mean they were working on one, or that they were into it.

You have to understand that announcements and development time are not the same. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced, with online, before they even had a game, director, company working on it, or anything.

For example:

Twilight Princess is a GAMECUBE game. It used The Wind Waker as a basis, and then they changed the graphics and finished it in 2005, ported it to Wii, and released it in 2006.

We're to assume that this Zelda, the true Wii Zelda, is being made from scratch, for the Wii. And unlike the previous games, they aren't using the same engine from the N64 and changing the layout, and it's going to use the Wii Motion Plus.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, on the other hand, is reusing the same engine from Galaxy 1, and graphics. The groundwork is already there, except for Yoshi. They don't have to do nearly as much as with creating a new Zelda from the ground up.

In addition to challenge, I hope they add more exploration and less linear levels. Challenge is fine and needed, and Galaxy was mostly way too easy, but when I think about why I loved Mario 64 and Sunshine, I think about the freedom I had to explore, and not necessarily the challenge. So make some non linear levels where I can start one mission and complete another.

When he says "Almost entirely new courses, I'm pretty sure he just means that a paltry few assets/texture packs fromt he first game will be repurposed in new models/scenarios.

It's a new game. Think of it like you would NSMB Wii to NSMB. I hope they find a ways to expand what the second player can do with IR.

terryxlr, I agree, but you WERE able to star one star mission and complete another in Galaxy, just not as often as you could in 64 or Sunshine. I know what you mean though, and a handful of more exploratory galaxies would be awesome. He does say "more expanded" so . . .

moldy, I can assure you they have begun developing the real NEXT mario game, most assuredly for the Wii's successor. Don't think of this as the true next Mario game in the lineage. Think of it as the Lost Levels were to the original SMB. Aren't the Lost Levels awesome?

What you said.

Also, new abilities for Mario is awesome. He lost some from Mario Sunshine to Galaxy.

Finalizing?

Holy Shucking Frits Miyamoto, I didn't expect the game to be any kind of Finalized until sometime next year AFTER E3.

People shouldn't be so surprised that this game is being completed so quickly. Aside from the engine being 100% completed at the time development had begun, I'd wager a good chunk of unused ideas that had already been written up for the first title, helped lay the ground work for this game. Normally I'd mock the idea of a rehash, but Super Mario Galaxy was so phenomonal, this direct sequel just HAD to be made. My most anticipated game right now and I can't wait to play it.

@MoldyClay

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was basically an "expansion pack" of the original game. It had new levels, but the same basic mechanics throughout.

Same with New Super Mario Bros. DS and New Super Mario Bros. Wii: new levels, but same basic mechanics.

Super Mario Galaxy is to Super Mario Bros., as Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to SMB: The Lost Levels.

@Rapidash6

Yeah but this is Miyamoto we're talking about, someone that would tear the house down and tell the architects to "try again" because he wasn't satisfied in one aspect.

The game is getting some new additions as well so I thought they'd have problems adjusting to that.

Maybe I'm just having some flashbacks of Super Mario 64 2 where the game was announced but not done, of course there was never a demo shown for the former game so that accounts for something.

challenge is fine, as long as it doesn't get anal. i mean there is good hard, and stupid hard. if nintendo can find that fine line, then it should be good.

there are games that you want to keep trying to beat because they are fun and doable, and ones you simply want to skip over just to continue on with the game. those are the moments that need the most work.

purple coin challenge is a great example of what NOT to do.
