November 6, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

In terms of the three we highlighted during E3, Sin and Punishment 2 is going to be something that the Nintendo fan can get really excited about. Galaxy 2...what can you say? Mr. Miyamoto himself is very excited about it. He thinks that it adds even more to that great title. And then Other M...that's another franchise that I've personally got great memories of. Back to a side-scrolling Metroid title. ...You mention Zelda Wii...we haven't committed to Zelda for 2010. Miyamoto said that it was tracking for 2010...so we'll see how that continues to develop. - Reggie Fils-Aime

I was just talking about this the other day. I really don't think Zelda Wii is going to come out 2010. We'll get a trailer at this year's E3, I will bet on that. Other than that, I don't think we'll be seeing much of Link outside the DS.

So it'll be over 4 years since the last console Zelda then? Dang, talk about a long development. This just makes expectations even higher, but the lack of info helps prevent over hyping.

Yea, and the last Zelda on Wii was a GameCube port, so maybe I should go add LOZ:TP to the NPC game comparison chart now that I think about.

Hmmmmm, Wii 2010 lineup:

From Nintendo:
Sin & Punishment 2
Endless Ocean 2
Span Smasher
Takt of Magic
Line Attack Heroes
Monado: Beginning of the World (probably)
Pikmin 3
Mario Galaxy 2
Metroid: Other M
Zelda (Maybe, but probably not)

From 3rd Parties:
The Grinder
Dragon Quest X
Tales of Graces
Fragile
Arc Rise Fantasia
Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest
Gladiator A.D.
Sky Crawlers
Monster Hunter 3
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Red Steel 2
No More Heroes 2
Epic Mickey

Those are just the major ones. You know more will be announced or pop up out of nowhere. I'd say that's a pretty good list. Even if Zelda DOESN'T come out next year, but we have to instead wait till 2011, well so what? I want to play it as much as anyone, but I'd rather they do it right. Twilight Princess took almost 4 years to make, and look how it turned out.

@Devil_Rising

Indeed, for me it's [so far]:

From Nintendo:
Endless Ocean 2
Mario Galaxy 2
Golden Sun DS

From 3rd Parties:
The Grinder
FFCC:CB
Tales of Graces [if it reaches Europe before 2011...]
Fragile [same as ToG]
Arc Rise Fantasia
Cube: Gardens of Zen
Furry Legends
Gladiator A.D.
Red Steel 2
Epic Mickey

I still have a feeling it'll be a Zelda Wii trailer at E3, then release in Winter [with SMG2 coming out in Summer]. Then again I could just be thinking too much into their visual schemes and or plain wishingful thinking. :-P

im willing to bet we dont even get to see a screenshot till e3 2010, and then we will get a trailer, and nothing else till e3 2011, where they will announce the game for q4 2011 or even friggin q1 2012

i dont mind waiting for a game, i do mind going this long with NOTHING, im 100% certain the ONLY reason we got that artwork, was because it was leaked anyways

Zelda isn't coming out in 2010. I don't know why anyone would really think so.

Should it? Logically, yes. The last Zelda we got was finished in 2005, and delayed so they could make a Wii port, and we will have since got 2 DS Zelda titles (made by a different team, mind you).

Normally, a Zelda title is started before the last one is even finished. For example, Twilight Princess started before TWW was done in 2002 (Japan), so it was in development for at least 3-4 years.

I am almost positive that they DIDN'T start developing this Zelda until sometime within 2008, at the earliest, because I am pretty sure they had Zelda team members working on Wii-Series things like Wii Fit.

@hcig

Yes. This. We did only get it because it leaked. In reality, we weren't supposed to know about the game, because I am almost positive they really have nothing to show for it yet EXCEPT that artwork.

This is precisely why Nintendo generally doesn't announce games until right before release now, but people messed the Zelda thing up. He really shouldn't have shown it.

@omegaro

This too. I'm not really hyped at all, since we know nothing. I'm still not hyped for Mario Galaxy 2. I just got more hyped for Spirit Choo-choo now, since we went a long time with no info.

And, like with TP, I now have high expectations.

TP failed to meet those expectations, since I realized the only reason we waited so long was because they wanted a Wii version so people would have something to buy.

@coffeewithchess
No offense, but if you're not the least bit interested in S+P and MG2, I can't help but assume you DO have another platform besides the Wii, right?

I'm expecting 2011 for Zelda but we still have little idea as to what all is coming in 2010 just yet. I DO expect a Zelda trailer at some point in 2010, though, and then the game will launch fall of 2011. That's my guess.

I don't mind waiting for Zelda Wii as long as it'll be better than TP. My only concern is if it comes out in 2011, would that be releasing the game too late in the Wii's life cycle?

I don't know what the Wii's sales will be like throughout 2010, but I'm expecting a new Nintendo console in 2011, and if not, then at least I expect them to announce one if not release one that year.

I guess I want it to come out in 2010 only because I feel that it might pull a Twilight Princess and be released on Nintendo's next console.

TP wasn't FINISHED in 2005, if you had read the Iwata Asks on it you would know the reason for the delay wasn't just to make it a Wii port, they did a lot more work on it.

But you are probably right about 2010, at least for NA and EUR.

Man, anyone not interested in Galaxy 2 is just baffling to me. More beautiful and wacky environments, yoshi, new power-ups and supposedly more challenge factor than Galaxy (wwhich had its fare share toward the end)? WTF is not to like?!

And if Zelda Wii somehow does come at the end of 2010, it has the potential to rival the Big N's best years in terms of software releases. How would it work though; Galaxy 2 around March, Other M toward the end of Aug (a classic Metroid release window) and Zelda end of Nov/early Dec? I guess we'll see, but it's doubtful

It's pretty sad he even mentions Sin & Punishment 2 when talking about big Wii games for next year. I mean, yeah it'll probably be a good game and definitely has me intriqued, but a big game? Come on now. Most people dont even know the first one ever happened, let alone that a sequel is coming out, and most people simply don't care at all. This game will not sell well, period, and won't make any kind of impact on the platform. If Punch-Out Wii was mostly forgotten in a couple of weeks after the release, then this has no chance at all.. sad, but true. Reggies comment would've been a lot more believable if he just mentioned SMG2, Metroid and Zelda (and maybe some bigger profile 3rd party titles like Red Steel 2, Epic Mickey, Grinder and No More Heroes 2) and left this niche title out of the equation..

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will probably be anywhere from March to June 2010, while Metroid: Other M will be, I'm betting, our big holiday title, most likely hitting in November of next year. I agree that we'll most likely see a Zelda Wii trailer next year but it could be as early as March, during the GDC conference, but an actual release probably won't be till March of 2011 at the earliest.

I don't know plan9. It seems to me that Nintendo can never win with you guys.

If Nintendo simply mentions Mario, Zelda and Metroid, you guys get pissed. You tell Nintendo it's rehashing the same franchises, and you give the company s***.

So Nintendo mentions what is essentially a new franchise - one that hasn't been released stateside yet (except for a Virtual Console release of the Japan-only game), and what do you do? You b**** about that and tell him not to mention a niche game.

Well what the f***? Quit b****! Nothing ever pleases you guys.

You b**** about Wind Waker because it features a kid link again and does not have art like Ocarina of Time. So Nintendo gives you Twilight Princess. Then you b**** about Twilight Princess being too much like Ocarina of Time.

besides 5 years is too much.

also to twight princess haters, What exzatly could N have done to improve it honestly THE ONLY THING ABOUT IT that sucks is the story (everything else is in EVERY ZELDA i.e gameplay wise)
And that only when compared to ww and o.o.t's stories(other then those 2 it's the best.)

@Nin2000

Comments like this are what makes me sad about modern gamers. Spoiled f***in' brats man.

I'm really sorry, but you NEVER would have seen MY generation (Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis), of gamer growing up, say ANYTHING remotely like what you just said. This sense of entitlement, like game developers OWE them something, that younger gamers these days seem to have, is quite frankly rather sickening.

Here's what you do. If a company makes a game you LIKE, go buy it. If they make a game you DON'T LIKE, then DON'T BUY IT. It's that simple. Game companies don't owe you a f***ing thing, honestly. Yes, they make money off the the hard earned dollars that you spend on THEIR games. But YOU, the gamer, also benefit from THEIR hard work and hard earned money spent, MAKING you these awesome games to play.

If Nintendo, or ANY other company, doesn't put out a game that you are interested in for a long span of time, well then guess what? You can either cry about it (which is what this sounds like), or you can GET OVER IT, and go play one of the HUNDREDS of other games made by OTHER companies, on 3 different home consoles, 2 different portable consoles, AND PC.

But here's the facts.

A Link to the Past came out in 1991.

Ocarina of Time didn't come out till 1998. Did you mind the wait THEN? Or were you even old enough to have been waiting that whole time for a new Zelda? Somehow I doubt it, from the sounds of it.

Majora's Mask came out in 2000, just a couple of years later, but it was also more a side game, hence it's original name "Zelda Gaiden".

Wind Waker came out in 2003. That's a 3 year wait.

Twilight Princess came out in 2006. Another 3 year wait.

And this new one might well come out in 2010, or it could not release until 2011. Either way, so WHAT? Know why? Because it's going to be awesome, regardless of how long it takes them to make. Unlike some game developers, Nintendo always has and always will take however long they feel they NEED to, to make a game a polished CLASSIC, instead of a unfulfilled rush job.

I had to wait from 1991 to 1998 for another Zelda. Was I mad? F**k no. I was THRILLED, and Ocarina was certainly worth the wait. Not being a fan of Majora's Mask OR Wind Waker, wanting a true follow up to Ocarina of Time, technically speaking, I had to wait ANOTHER EIGHT YEARS for Twilight Princess, the type of Zelda game I'd been longing for, to come out. Was I mad? Sure, I was disappointed because WW wasn't the Zelda game I personally wanted to see. But I was also THRILLED when TP was finally revealed, because I knew all along that Nintendo would make another Zelda.

I had to wait from 1994 all the way til 2002 for another Metroid after Super Metroid. Then in 2002, I got BOTH Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion all at once! Again, I had to wait 8 freaking years for another Metroid. But was it worth the wait? HELL YEAH it was.

For that matter, I've had to wait almost TWENTY YEARS for Nintendo to FINALLY make another 2D console Mario game. Did I spend that whole time being butt-hurt about it? No. And is New Super Mario Bros. Wii going to be worth that long LONG wait? F**K YES it is. You can bet your sweet ass it will be.

So I'm sorry, but this attitude of yours and the same one that so many other gamers seem to have today, that "If they don't make X game that I want SOON, then I'm DONE with X company"...it's bulls**t. And it's also pathetic. I'm not trying to insult you personally, but I will gladly attack this p*ss poor attitude.

The truth is, you're spoiled by great games. And if you honestly haven't found ANYTHING to like or be happy about since Twilight Princess came out, be it MP3, or Galaxy, or Fire Emblem, or BWII, or Brawl, or MKWii, or Wario Land, or Super Paper Mario, I mean YOU NAME it......well then I don't know what to tell you.

Go ahead and be "done" with Nintendo then. Because with an attitude like that, these type of "entitled" gamers don't honestly deserve to play the great games these companies put out anyway. Have a nice day.

@Devil_Rising

You know, apart from the swears and the tone of the post, you make a very good point, and have sort of put it in perspective for me.

I didn't get into zelda until 2000 (age 13) when my bro bought OOT, I was hooked, and about 8 months later MM came out, so not much of a wait for me. Then there was WW, personally my second fav after OOT, loved the graphical style.

A year after WW came out, we saw a trailer of the next zelda (TP), it was technically only meant to come out 2 years after WW (first quarter 05) but was delayed until december of 06, so a 3.5 year wait, but we had plenty of screen shots to feed on in the meantime.

So I guess if we say TP was released at the very end of 06, then having the next zelda released at the end of 10/ start of '11 would only be a 4 year wait.

And as you say, you can't rush a masterpiece, other wise it turns out to be of poor quality and I suppose I would rather wait for the game if that meant that the quality was going to be better than a rushed released. I'm still disappointed that WW was rushed and hence had 2 less dungeons. So us zelda fans have learnt a lesson.

On a personal note, TP wasn't my fav 3d zelda game, I think the story aspect let it down for me, but everything else about the game was truly great.

As for other games, well I've never been a multi-console person, due to cost, I figure the more games I get into, the less money I'll have, so I've stuck with nintendo. Although I do like the look of that xbox360 Natal project.

While You made good points, You fail to see this THEY DIDN'T start development til at earlyest 1995,It was released it 1998 so yeah that's a 3 year gap(at most).
this new zelda was been in devoloped since late '07 or early '08 so if it's 07 4 years, 08 3 years if it's released in 2011.

I'm all for taking time to develop a title but honestly how long is too long You make it sound like Something like duke nukem is exceptible.

Okay, I'll buy that. However, MY point, was that a GREAT game is worth waiting for, no matter HOW long it takes. Duke Nukem Forever hasn't been on ANYONE'S radar since 1997. It wasn't ever going to be a great game, because while Duke Nukem 3D was a GOOD game, there were better games in it's own genre, even back then.

The next Zelda, on the other hand, is BOUND to be a great game. Because every Zelda game that Nintendo has made has been great. Even though I don't personally like Majora's Mask or Wind Waker, or the DS Zeldas, I still realize that most people think they're great games, and that has been the general opinion of almost all critics as well.

Also, I didn't fail to see anything. My point was that I had to wait 7 years for Ocarina after ALTTP, I had to wait another 8 years for Twilight Princess, I had to wait 8 years after Super Metroid for ANY new Metroid games, and I've had to wait almost 20 long years for Nintendo to FINALLY make another 2D Mario game on their home consoles. A real Mario game, not Yoshi's Island (not a Mario game), or Super Paper Mario (which is great, but not part of the main series).

And again, while I get a little weary of pointing this out, because I literally JUST did it for the other guy, what is this business about Nintendo "Not releasing anything else in between their good games"?

So what are Super Paper Mario, or Wario Land, or Punch Out, or Excite Bots, or BWII, or Fire Emblem, or Metroid Prime Trilogy (probably the best compilation since Super Mario All-Stars) , or Endless Ocean, or the Mario sports titles for crap's sake? Those are good games, and Nintendo has consistently been releasing decent to great titles that aren't explicitly from the Mario, Zelda or Metroid camps. Not everyone is going to like or want ALL those games, sure, but I hope you're not suggesting that none of those are good titles.

no offense taken, I completely understand your reasons. All I can say is at least we have Spirit Tracks to keep us occupied until the next Wii rendition. And from what ive seen, I'm liking spirit tracks a lot more than when it was first unveiled at e3.

Why? Because it looks bad ass, and because Treasure is bad ass, that's why.

Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Mischief Makers, Dynamite Heady, Alien Soldier, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Wario World, AND Sin & Punishment, the company has a history of making very good, and usually very hard cult classic titles. That's why.

I agree that Sin & Punishment has a lot of faults, mainly in how punishing the difficulty is, and how much of a jumbled mess the controls are, especially without an N64 controller. But that's precisely why I WANT Sin & Punishment 2, because they're likely going to fix what was wrong with SP1, and obviously enhance and improve the experience. Especially with moving with the nunchuk and aiming with the Wiimote, that is going to make the controls a LOT better, and hence make the game a LOT more fun to play. At least for me.

Plus, it'll give us shooter fans something to tide us over until Nintendo finally gets off their asses and releases a PROPER sequel to Star Fox 64.

o.k spm is good,I hated punchout*,FE is awesome, wario sucked*,metriod prime wasn't my kind of game and it's too hard for me*,ENDLESS OCEAN why?,of the wii mario sports(only referring to wii games) kart is good the rest are too hard*

so yeah 3 games there I like and most the ones I said sucked had bad reviews so It ain't just me. You forgot SMG,ZTP,&SSBB. which are good in my opinion.

anyway I meant 2-6 games a year (if you include DS games) sure there are a lot(except 08 and 09) but quality>quantity.

Also can't exclude windwaker and majora's mask or the GAMEBOY games** (which happened between ALTTP and O.O.T's releases) You are free exclude cdi and non locatized games but that's it.

Other wise your excluding 7 games(oracles,LA,mm,ww,FSA,TMC) that's almost half!

*too hard, and harder=/=funner (same with easier)

**except minish cap in 2005

The just "ain't you" are all the ones you stink at. Metroid Prime, hard? It was the perfect difficulty. I'm guessing you are a casual gamer?

I get what you're saying and you are right in that Nintendo fans are hard to please and someone always whines about something (although often, they have a valid reason for doing so).

What I meant with my comment was that Reggie mentioning only a couple of games and Sin & Punishment 2 being one of them, just makes it all too obvious that there really isn't much in the pipeline for the hardcore gamer by Nintendo. I'm all for "new" Nintendo franchises outside of Mario and Zelda, but other than me (and not counting fellow feedbackers here) I don't know anyone who is looking forward to Sin & Punishment 2.. matter of fact, I don't think I know anyone who even knows a game like that exists (one or two friends may have heard about the first one 10 years ago, not sure).

With that said, I would have preferred Nintendo just stick to their big guns in that comment, possibly hinting at Pikmin or whatever, because now it seems to me like they only have 3, maybe 4 games coming that aren't casual. And that, my friend, is pretty sad indeed.

Anyhow, hope this clarifies my point so you don't have to wave your virtual dagger at me. I tip my hat to Nintendo for at least sometimes trying new things such as Disaster: Day of Crisis, but even then when it doesn't sell in huge amounts on one market they p#ssy out and don't even bother to try if it'd do better somewhere else.. for a company that's taken such a huge risk with DS and Wii, it's pretty odd that they're so scared to experiment with HC games, even if the game is fully completed.

Also, for the record I love Wind Waker and was sold on the graphic style the moment I saw the first trailer.

For SMG2, I REALLY hope they use this time to remove those recycled levels from the first game and replace them with brand new content.

That's been the biggest questionable thing about the game, and just seems lazy.

What was it, like 20-30% recycled content? Thinking about it, that's quite a lot.

O.k maybe if played metriod before then yeah it's difficulty is fine but prime was my first metriod. Also MP3 is pretty good but 1 game out of 3 games is unexceptable (for MP1 & MP2 I have played GCN versions)

You assume that I'm casul cause I thought MP was too hard, hell Majora's mask is slightly easier then that and that is ridicolusly hard (I say it's easier because I've comeplete 80% of mm but have completed only 50% of MP3 and >%40 of the other 2)

As far what is too hard about it the boss battles seriously I had every cheat on except INVINCIBILITY and still can't beat the bosses at all.

I'm gladfor S&P2, because it's a more serious game, and there are unfortunately still people who think Nintendo only makes "casual kiddy games." Other M is also at the top of my 2010 shopping list, since i'm a huge Metroid fan, and while the Prime trilogy (Hunters doesn't count) is beyond excellent, I've been wanting a return to more traditional gameplay for a while.

Dragon Quest 10 is still a long ways off. If it's anywhere near the scope of 4 and 5, while trying to bring it's popularity around the world like 9, then it's most likely not going to release in '10.

They have said that it is going to be a 2010 game. I don't know if it will release then, but that's when it's supposed to come out, according to Square-Enix.
