November 6, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: DS, GoNintendo Updates, Nintendo in general

gonintendo endofday border

Holy hell, what a long night! I can't remember the last time a late-night/early morning round of updates took that long. At least there was a ton of awesome news, and not just a bunch of Petz boxarts. A Spirit Tracks trailer, all sorts of talk from Miyamoto and Reggie, and tons of NSMBW goodies to check out. You have fun with all that while I slip off to bed. See you in a few, short hours!

spirit_tracks_logo.png

I'll tell you, the gang over at Official Nintendo Magazine is an absolutely fantastic bunch. I don't know how I was so lucky to fall in with them! I'll have to make a trip across the pond just to show my gratitude!

This time around, the guys over at ONM want to give you an opportunity to have your Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks questions answered. It couldn't be a better time to present questions, coudl it?! We finally got a new trailer, and of course, that very trailer opens up a ton of questions. I know that I've had at least 10 whizzing about in my head since I saw the trailer. After watching it about 10 more times, I still can't make heads or tails of a few things!

Now's your chance to possibly have your questions answered. All you have to do is ask your question in our comments section. The guys over at ONM are going to sift through the questions, and answer as many as they can. Of course, not every single question can be answered, nor can all topics be discussed. As ONM staffer Fred Dutton says...

There are limits on what I'm allowed to reveal about Spirit Tracks, so I can't promise I'll be able to answer everything, but I'll do my best. Obviously, don't ask what score we've given it!

That doesn't mean that yyou can't try any other questions that come to mind...so have at it! Leave a question...or two...or twenty below, and the guys at ONM will be answering them for you very soon! As always, a huge thank-you to the ONM staff for including us and our readers in this awesome opportunity.

As we see in the trailer, zelda has been turned into a ghost or a spirit (cue the name?) and it's also been said the train is customizable in the same was as the boat was in Phantom Hourglass. Could you give us any of the possibilities for the train's customization?

is there another freaking backtracking dungeon like that one in PH?

how long is it?

does zelda get to possess just phantoms, or other things, is she used in boss fights?

how often do you get to do those cool looking train based fights? are there train based dungeons?

does the rope snake mean a new mother game? (lol)

can i have a copy? :D

My questions are:

-Is this better than Phantom Hourglass?

-Who is the new villain?

-Are there a lot more items to use than there was in Phantom Hourglass and if so how varied are they?

-Are you in Hyrule?

Will certain dungeons be timed like in Phantom Hourglass? I really didn't like being timed to fight and solve puzzles.

Special thanks to RMC and ONM for giving us the chance to ask questions.

Is there anything in this game that will appeal to people who weren't big fans of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass?

Please restore my faith in this title by just answering one simple question and it isn't plot or heavily gameplay related.

Can you say this title is HARDER than the Oracle GameBoy Zeldas or Link's Awakening DX?

If you tell me its harder than Phantom Hourglass that's not helping, I'm surprised it even had puzzles to begin with. (And yeah, I bought it and beat it but still disappointed the game wasn't made for the core Zelda fan)

- Is the game harder than recent Zeldas? Or at least on par with the Gameboy titles?

- Can you wear alternate colored tunics or other costumes (besides Conductor) at any time in the game?

- I've seen the Rope Snake and some leaf thing, are there more "new" items, compared to PH having all re-used items?

- Is Tingle in the game? If so, what does he do this time?

- Are there any special sidequests that unlock anything special or interesting? (Items, weapons, etc)

- Can Zelda possess other things? I don't need to know what, just curious if she can be things other than the Phantom

- Are there any in-game references to other events in other titles?

- How long is the game? Dungeon number or hour-wise work.

- Are there any interesting or unusual dungeons?

- Any new races? Any returning races? (Gorons, Zoras, Deku Scrubs, Rito, etc?)

- Is there any form of multiplayer, or online thing? Even if it's trading stuff like Train Parts (if the train even IS customizable).

- Are there any mindblowing surprises? Some surprising twist we'd never expect?

- Does the game feature any DSi enhancements or no?

- Are there any new, clever uses of the DS, similar to how Phantom Hourglass had stuff like where you had to close the DS to put something on your map?

@MrBubbles

I'm pretty sure the point of PH was to test the DS features and see if gamers liked that direction of using no buttons and the stylus stuff. It was made for the purpose of making this game better, or at least, that's what I pretend.

Will there be a focus on interaction with NPC's like there was in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker?

Also like in Wind Waker will you be able to take little side story quests from NPC's as well?

Furthermore will this game feel like an actual living world like Wind Waker(noticing a theme here) as opposed to the barren and completely lifeless worlds of Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass?

How different does the story feel as opposed to other Zelda games?

Any returning races? Any new ones?

Do the environments feel a bit more lively than Phantom Hourglass?

How much time do you spend on your train as opposed to just walking around in towns or in dungeons?

Is the "Tower of Spirits" like the "Temple of the Ocean King?" By that I mean is it a dungeon you return to constantly? If so, is the amount of backtracking much less than TotOK, or at the very least is there a time limit or not when you're inside?

I'm at least hoping for there to be no time limit while in there, because the Phantom Hourglass isn't in this game.

1-How long is the game?

2-The game will be harder than Zelda PH?

3-There will be new puzzles?

4-What about the story? This Zelda and Zelda PH are connected?

Thanks! :)

My question is short, simple and to the point:

Are there heart pieces to find this time around? I've heard there were, but want to be sure. Thanks!

Oh man! Yeah, this.

Are there Heart Pieces? Or just containers? If there are pieces, is it like older Zeldas (4 pieces) or like Twilight Princess (5 pieces)?

How is the soundtrack?

I want to know if the songs are better than PH, if they are more varied, and mainly if you don't have the same crappy 5 seconds loop for every dungeon. It drove me crazy, and was easily the biggest reason why most people didn't have patience to go through the fetch quests or the Ocean King.

//Rant
Please. This is the only reason why I wouldn't buy ST. I mean, companies are making brand new IPs with bigger cartridges only to fit orchestrated songs; why is Nintendo so lazy on the music creation and so cheap to save money doing the smallest cartridge possible in such a huge franchise as Zelda...

How many swords can you get in the game?

How many items can you get?

Is the Temple of Spirits just another Temple of the Ocean King, where you must go through the same dungeon over and over to get to a new portion each time? If not, then what is it?

Here's my question:

What about this game will sell it to Zelda fans who were disappointed with Phantom Hourglass?

Oh, and will there finally be Difficulty options?

@melbye

On DSi stuff, Yeah! Last I heard you can use the cameras to make pictures for the front of your chwoo-chwoo chwain!

Might be a rumah.

I hope there's no temple of the ocean king-like place: otherwise Phantom Hourglass ruled and this will be even better

Blast! Everyone's stolen all the good questions! I've still got a few though...

Does this game connect to other games in the timeline (other than taking place sometime after Phantom Hourglass), or is it just kind of a "gaiden" Zelda like Majora's Mask and Phantom Hourglass before it?

Also, how's the plot? Is it the whole "collect three things, then collect some other things" deal again?

Finally, how big is the game world? Is it as big as Phantom Hourglass, or larger?

How does the new train compare to the original boat in The Phantom Hourglass? Is it faster? More enjoyable? Or does it feel restricting because you're limited to a set track? (Which, coincidentally, I heard you can lay down your own later in the game, is this true?) Thanks a ton for taking the time to answer all these questions!

The train seems like it can hinder exploration, in your experience... Is that true or is exploration still a priority?

Any new and unexpected features or gameplay items?

Any new touch screen or mic controls (or any refinements to the last game's controls?)

Will a challenge area be making a return (like the Cave of Ordeals)?

Did you enjoy this title as much, more, or less than the rest of Nintendo's holiday line-up (Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, and NSMB Wii)? As much, more, or less than Phantom Hourglass and Twilight Princess?

Any new and great characters like Midna?

Thanks again ONM!!!!

Are there any side quests? (Please be like majoras mask...)

Did the train ever feel "out of place" from the rest of the game?

What did you think of the music? Improvement of past titles? Song in new trailer was amazing.

Did you ever feel like you were playing Phantom Hourglass, but with a train?

BUTTON CONTROL!?

Can I use the D-pad and buttons to control Link this time around? Or is it still limited to stylus-ONLY controls?

Thanks in advance.

Was the game inspired by western themes? If so, what specific themes from the west inspired the gameplay and story and music?

Also, do the bunny ears come back in this game? I miss them...

- How big is the world?

-Do each dungeon have a unique music theme?

-How does Spirit Tracks fare against previous handheld Zelda titles? (Links Awakening, Oracles and Minish cap)

-Will there be more items this time around?

-In Phantom Hourglass rupees weren't much of a big deal, will rupees in Spirit Tracks be more useful?

-Will we be expecting more of those crazy yet ingenious puzzles such as the one your suppose to close your DS in order to get the map in Phantom hourglass in Spirit Tracks?

-Can we expect upgrades not only for the sword but also for the shield?

-How high are your expectations for this game?

thank you.

I'm interested in knowing if you can actually pause to change items, or even have more than one item bubble on screen. That was a point of frustration in the first game for me, was having to change items mid-fight and getting hurt because it didn't even pause when you accessed the menu.

-Does the game feels linear ?(exploration, progression,..)
-Can you interact with NPCs this time around ? (not just reading their two lines of text, something like sidequests.)
-Is there things to do in villages ? (Again, sidequests, Minish Cap was awesome for that).
-Is there a lot of places to visit (compared to Phantom Hourglass) ?
-Do you automatically kill an enemy (like a blob or a bat) if you click on him with the stylus ?(this made the combats to fast in PH).

My wife, an extremely casual gamer, actually played through and beat Phantom Hourglass, almost entirely by herself. It can't be understated what an accomplishment that is on Nintendo's part.

Is Spirit Tracks on the same level of difficulty, maybe a little bit higher? Will my wife be able to beat it without getting too frustrated?

Just some short questions:
-How long is the game (for your average Zelda player)?
-Heart pieces or containers?
-Can you explore the land without the train?
-More sidequests?
