“I think mid- to long-term it’s a significant threat. I don’t carry a DS or a PSP around, but I’ve got my iPhone everywhere. So if it plays good games, I’m less likely to pick one of the others up. ...I think the stars could align and it could start to eclipse those other systems in terms of unit sales.” - John Carmack
I really don't see any gamer giving up their DS or PSP for games on the iPhone. Until there's some sort of universal button solution that is put together by Apple and supported by third parties, I really don't see any contest.

Sometimes it sounds like these people are trying to "force" apple into the gaming busines...

People buy the iPhone because it's a.... with for it....... it's coming.... it's a phone! People buy a DS or PSP to play games.

Buttons. On screen, touch screen buttons suck. No feedback. The PSP and DS kick the iPhone's ass in terms of games. Plus, I don't consider the iPhone a serious game platform, but I will admit it has a good little collection of decent games. Then again, I always play my DS and PSP at home. I never take them out and about.
When I was little, I would take my GBC and later GBA everywhere and play them. Now that I'm nearing 20... When I'm out and about, I keep myself busy.

This. [Though I'll be buying one eventually for a portable camera myself]
The iPhone being a viable gaming system is like saying the DSi is. They aren't.

Belive me Kevin, some people are throwing their DS/PSP's away for Iphones, my friend made that foolish desicion just recently.
Go away Carmack, your games are as tired as an old man, and I don't care what you think. Had you actually bothered with DS/PSP in the first place, your words would have more weight.

I really do think Nintendo should be wary of Apple. Perhaps not in the short-term, but I have no doubt that the two may need to cross swords in the near future.
As for the button thing... yeah, maybe that applies to the iPhone, but it's not like the iPhone will ever change, ever evolve. Apple has some remarkable hardware innovators, and they may just catch Nintendo off guard.
That said, I believe in Nintendo has more talent in this regard than Apple and could certainly stand their own if they felt it necessary. I only fear Nintendo will ignore this threat before it's too late.

I'm posting from my iPod Touch right now so clearly I have nothing against the devices. Still, I'd never want to play a game on it. The on screen buttons are TERRIBLE. I haven't been able to play anything with a fraction of the DS's ease of control. Even Monkey Island SE controls poorly. It's a far from ideal gaming platform and would need major revisions if Apple has any hope of being a serious contender.

You havent played MiniGore
.
But on topic, it will take a huge push for the iPhone to be more than an indie haven for games rather than a dedicated platform.

@Dammit_Joey
I'll give it a try. If playable content exists I'll happily give it a shot. But I have yet to be impressed.

Well, good to know people are projecting the future of gaming through astrology. Now we just have to wait until Venus aligns with Uranus and we'll get that Wii HD!

In terms of quality of games? Never.
In terms of sales? .... Ehhh I can see this happening.

carmack fails...
he forgot the most important thing:
joypad...
a full touchscreen interface is a fail for gaming.
it's been already tested in the past.
iphone is not a console.
and a s*** phone.(nokia ones are far better phones)
(natal will follow)
in the future when there will be haptic interfaces for games maybe will be time to leave joypads...
but for now joypad is what distinguish a console from a phone.
