November 8, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

This is a snippet from the final section of the Iwata Asks feature on Sin and Punishment 2, which features...

Satoru Iwata – President of Nintendo
Shingo Matsushita – Software Planning & Development Team
Yurie Hattori – Software Planning & Development Team
Hitoshi Yamagami – Software Planning & Development Team
Masato Maegawa – CEO of Treasure Corporation
Atsutomo Nakagawa – Director of Treasure Corporation
Yasushi Suzuki – Art Director

Hattori: I first pushed for basic things like how they should properly make a tutorial and how they should make the difficulty so that beginners could play as well. However, as I began to get involved in the development, I began to feel that the difficulty shouldn’t just be lowered.

Iwata: You felt that if you did such a thing, the game would be ruined.

Hattori: Yes. And there were fans of the previous game and many fans of Treasure who feel that that way is how the game should be, and I felt that I shouldn’t ever rattle such a fanbase.

Iwata: In the first place, shooting games are considered to be the easy route of video games and so many people would play it, but it’s also the genre in which the archetypal game is one where many people get weeded out -– rather, one where the number of players decreases [the further you get into the game].

Iwata: ...I’m surprised with what was said just now. Nintendo actually told Treasure, “Make it harder.” If it weren’t for “Creator’s Voice,” I would never have known. ...I have associated with teams with many different personalities before … but I still feel that the most unique of them all is Treasure (laughs).

I don't want it to flop, but I have this unwarranted sense of possessiveness when it comes to this title. Like this feeling that this game is too good for most gamers. Crazy, I know, but I can't help but feel that way. Anyway I, at the very least, hope that people will know about this game when it is released. Even if most people don't end up being interested in the game, I hope everyone that would be interested will know of it's existence, and that the game turns a healthy profit.

Nakagawa: Me? Hmm… Then I’ll say something programmer-ish as a last thing… The game is really hard, and we’re probably pushing it… And the scenario is a messy jumble as always and we kind of overdid it… That being said…

This was my favorite part of the talk.

Well the game sold enough on the virtual console to warrant the making of a sequel. So I am sure they are hoping everybody who bought it on the VC will buy the sequel in stores. Which is a fair assumption, but yeah its not going to sell millions of copies I don't think.

@terryxlr

Well, considering this game is much more harder than the original (judging by interviews) and that it's a sequel to a great game, I guess there is a good chance that this will interest a majority of the hardcore crowd. Of course, there are many amazing and difficult games that have flopped.

Hahaha I love treasure. They really break the mold, don't they?

This is gonna be a great game.

But the didn't really talk about the story... I wonder if you see Saki and Airan in the game...

What do you call a flop? Its not a mil seller, but if it sells 200,000 thats good for a game like that.

As long as they continue to try to apply the strategy of making core games that also cater to "new gamers", games are going to continue to be crappy.

Experienced gamers want games that challenge them. Beginners probably aren't going to be playing these types of games at first regardless. They may eventually move on to these types of games, but they're going to move onto the ones the experienced gamers they know tell them are good.

"As long as they continue to try to apply the strategy of making core games that also cater to "new gamers", games are going to continue to be crappy."

What you described is called a bridge game, and there has already been successful attempts on the Wii so please stop with these inane statements.

I agree with Wiggymaster. The Wii Sports crowd isn't going to walk into Gamestop and pick up Sin and Punishment 2. I'd prefer Nintendo went all out with the difficulty on this sort of game, as it's really not the kind of game that can be classified as a 'bridge'.

But oh well, judging from the developers comments in this interview, it sounds like the game should still be a decent challenge. Can't wait. :)

@Inneverate:

Look, I understand you're a fanboy and will defend Nintendo to the death no matter what they do, but it's getting old seeing your name stink up the comment section with nonsense anytime someone has anything critical to say about them.

Besides, the point is not necessarily monetary success - the point is quality. It would appear Iwata agrees with me as per this article.

@LegendsOfHyrule:

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this one.

I am currently playing on normal, it's not that hard but really ok, you won't get frustrated. I really enjoy S&P 2 even if I don't understand anything :D

Heh, the idea of Treasure making a "bridge" game is ridiculous. Anyway, I don't get why there's any fuss about the difficulty. From the start they should've just let Treasure do how they do, and then implement DIFFICULTY OPTIONS.

You'd be surprised how much help a series can get by simply having a small cameo in a Smash Bros game.

thats probably the reason for more than half of the people were interested in the first game on the VC.

Glad to see someone making an attempt to please core gamers (especcially on the Wii) with something challenging this day an age.. games have just gotten too easy.

I haven't played the first S&P, and despite all the nice talk I'm still not very interested, but from what I've seen and with statements like Hattori's, I am looking forward to this second entry.

Most of the games that Nintendo makes have the potential to be 'bridge' titles (Mario Kart, Smash Bros), but this isn't it.

It also isn't the kind of game that will set the 'hardcore' world on fire either unfortunately, but Treasure will bring a certain gravitas to the Wii.

@Dr_Peace

I'd like to list the Mario RPGs as well as potential bridge games too. I used to hate turn based RPGs until I played Paper Mario. I was like 11 at the time and I used to hate playing "adventure" games that weren't played similar to Zelda. I remember playing Final Fantasy on my cousin's NES and hated not being able to just get up close to a monster and press A or B to attack, and not being able to dodge attacks. After Paper Mario I started to try out a couple more RPGs of all kinds. Action RPGs are probably my favorite kind, though, since they feel more like Zelda, but I like turn based RPGs more now than before I played Paper Mario (I'm playing through Golden Sun right now and it's pretty fun).

Getting back on subject, I know I'm getting S&P2 next year. Yeah I'm not expecting the sales to be spectacular (the first game was actually a flop in Japan, though sometimes I do wonder how well it might have sold if a Western release did happen), but at least we're actually getting this game outside of Japan.

wait, you guys are missing something

NINTENDO requested more difficulty

i hope that this, with the promise of harder mario, that it means that nintendo is going to stop making casual difficulty for non casual/"core" games (the last time i remember good ole' tear inducing nintendo difficulty was with fzero's story campaign, starting with that satanic bomb on your racer crap)

i DESIRE to die in zelda, in this next wii zelda, i want to make it through the final battle by the skin of my teeth, all fairies used up, with 1/4 heart left, and just by sheer luck, i dodge and counter, killing the boss.

man, i want a hard zelda :(
and starfox, at least make it like the original, back when it first came out that game was pretty hard (though now its become easy from gaming experience)
and a hard fzero

i just want fzero D:

"Many of the people who originally enjoyed shooting games" , see that's a shooting game/shoot them up not an onrail games. Of course every shoot them up are on rails but the ability to dodge is the key element.
Despite that the "hardcore" will keep saying onrails. It's a 3d shoot them up since the enemies comes from the right and left AND the back/front.

Why doesn't treasure "port" ikaruga onto wiiware/ wii retail ,
