November 9, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

Apologies for the strange first bit of the video. My video program is giving me some trouble with editing!

Direct link here

Well, what do you guys think? I happened to like the both a lot! I prefer the first to the second, but both are pretty great.

I agree. They are both great and have a very iconic Mario feeling. The classic theme remix does it's job well and the ending of the commercials (the flag) will really help hook in those who played Mario back in the day but haven't touched the series (or video games) in a long time.

Great ads, Nintendo does a great job of making quality ads.

I think that will appeal to a lot of people.

I saw the second one at the movies this weekend. Actually heard someone go "What! It's $200 dollars now!?!?" in reference to the price of the Wii

The only thing I dislike about these commercials is that it shows constant multiplayer, it should've had one commercial focused on multiplayer, and another one on single player. Some classic Mario players might believe that its only a multiplayer game.

I've really grown to hate commercials that focus on the actors "playing" the game and acting like they're "having fun" instead of focusing on the game itself.

However, I'm still getting the game, once my financial situation is cleared.

I dunno back before the Wii era Mario commercials used to be funny.

Compare the Mario Baseball of the gamecube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK5g1ridZ1E&NR=1

To the commercial of the Wii: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MEfXI9NWIs

Nowadays these commercials are too innocent. Despite this one being a game that would appeal to classic gamers, this makes it look like another family friendly Wii Sporty game.

Not really my cup of tea but I like how they added the animated props in the background including the Bloopers and Bob-Ombs.

This should do the job for letting new players explore a bit more.

these ads aren't meant to target us at all, so it's not a huge surprise that long-timers might not respond to em much. In general, game ads on tv simply exist for the amusement of those who follow gaming closely online. If we haven't made up our minds by release time, it would probably take demos to have any real effect on purchase decisions, or at the very least some awesome new gameplay videos/details

I agree. By now, most gamers have decided if they will pick the game up and a commercial won't really push those "in the know" to pick it up. The objective is to get those that don't know about the game to start thinking about it.

There has been only one game commercial that convinced me to pick up a game I wasn't going to buy and it was the commercial for Wii Music. The Mario theme and the overall appeal of the commercial changed my mind. Although I got a good amount of enjoyment from the title (and don't passionately hate it), the game just didn't live up to the commercial (and I knew it wouldn't, but couldn't resist after seeing the commercial 400 times).

But aren't half of all gamers kids anyway? Hell I was 3 years old when I got into gaming. I like to use that argument sometimes. "We were ALL new gamers/kids at one point in time, get over it."

@RMC

Anyway, yeah I think those are some pretty cool ads. Helps get the point across this is the first side scrolling Mario with 4 player co-op, while still containing material that appeals to gamers both old and new.

Must every single Nintendo commercial feature the "family" angle?

Can't we just for once have a commercial advertising the game itself rather than the freaking console? There's more footage of the players of the game then there is the game.

Face it, Nintendo, if people haven't figured out by now that not only nerds play video games, they never will.

Nintendo doesn't need to work to show that this game has "mass market" or "family" appeal - everyone's going to figure that out, and you can bet it's going to sell great with the casuals or gamers who "stopped" playing games ten years ago and bought a Wii this generation.

The people Nintendo should be trying to sell on this game are the traditional gamers who've all but given up on the Wii. They should show them what awaits them in this game. Show them, say, something like this, and they'll be reminded that games can kick ass even if they're not 3D cinematic wonders.

Bring out the "kid" in all of us. Get us excited again, rather than just spout your numbers and show off how mainstream you are.

Money = Advertising.

E-mails = no sales whatsover so use that stupid cash flow we know you've been hiding since 2005 and finally advertise the rest of your games you damn uncreative bastards!

@Wiggymaster

I thought it had a nice balance of "speaking to the old and new gamers." I'm probably not as old of a gamer as you are (I'm 19 and I've been gaming since the SNES), but the younger gamer in me got all warm and fuzzy with this commercial. *reminisces the days of playing Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES* Those were the days...

It was okay, but Nintendo really could have also shown off the fact it can be a solid one player adventure.

I dunno, personally I prefer a good 30 seconds of mostly game footage showing off some cool parts of the game, and less footage of actors pretending to play it.

Oh well. LESS THAN A WEEK!!! =)

"I've really grown to hate commercials that focus on the actors "playing" the game and acting like they're "having fun" instead of focusing on the game itself."

But it was that type of advertising that successfully marketed the Wii in the first place. It was a deliberate and calculated strategy that paid off. It's just advertising. Who cares?

"Must every single Nintendo commercial feature the "family" angle?"

Because that's the point of the system? To appeal to the whole family?

"Face it, Nintendo, if people haven't figured out by now that not only nerds play video games, they never will."

That's a bit of an odd statement. The entire point of the Wii is to make gaming popular beyond nerds or the nerd-like image. Why should Nintendo stop its marketing in that direction? Because you arbitrarily decided you've had enough?

"The people Nintendo should be trying to sell on this game are the traditional gamers who've all but given up on the Wii."

Why? You think a 2D Mario is going to attract a person who dislikes the Wii? Those people hate this game and they haven't even played it yet.

At least when I b**** about a game it's because I've actually played it.

Hhehe, yeah that's why I blocked that dude. Such a broken record. :-P

Also, why are some folk up in arms about these adverts? All interweb-common gamers like ourselves have already made up our minds about the game, in fact, gaming adverts in that respect are surely just for the expanded audience?

I have no idea what game advert could possibly sell a game to a traditional gamer without any other prior information of said game. Then again, I go with my own mind and don't care for reviews so maybe my brain's wonky... *shrugs*

@DoubleDragon:

I'm not complaining about the game, I'm complaining about the ad. Obviously I'm excited for the game and plan on purchasing it.

You asked, "You think a 2D Mario is going to attract a person who dislikes the Wii?" The answer is maybe. Here's the thing: not everyone who dislikes the Wii hates the Wii, or even dislikes it because of what it is. Some of the people who "dislike" it (including a few personal friends of mine) are just merely massively disappointed with it.

When the Wii came out, there were great expectations for it. A lot of gamers - including myself - loved the concept of it because it was going to be the only system which was all about games. While the PS3 and 360 were about Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, high definition, and being all-in-one entertainment centers, the Wii was going to be about games. It was the cheaper alternative that made up for its lack of visual technology with amazing input technology, downloadable classics and the promise of a great, software-focused setup. What we got was a virtual console which went unexpectedly dry after two years, a lack of quality titles and all around let down.

Traditional gamers merely want Nintendo to start speaking to them again. As of now, all Nintendo seems to offer is excuses as to why gamers should be satisfied with them instead of putting their money where their mouth is. The next year should be better, as there's quite a few great Nintendo games coming out, however those disenchanted gamers still long to feel like Nintendo cares whether or not they continue to be Nintendo customers.

I don't think there is any let-down on Nintendo's part. It can only put out so many games each year, and the only duds I can really think of are Animal Crossing and Wii Music. Otherwise, it has been pretty good.

I don't have any thoughts on the virtual console. I still own all of my systems so it's kind of useless to me. However, there are only so many Nintendo-published titles that can grace it. Third parties need to step up their game.

I think any let down is a result of third parties. But I'm seeing some great third party offerings in the next year.

Tatsunoku vs. Capcom, Innocent Aces, The Grinder, Monster Hunter 3, etc.

Maybe if we didn't get s*** ports (hello Dirt 2) or late ports (hello Modern Warfare Reflex) we'd be happier.
