November 12, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

"We applaud anything that will further expand the market of game players; it's in everyone's best interest, but all of this talk around new motion controllers does make me think about the people who initially said that the Wii Remote was just a fad. I wonder what happened to those people? For some reason, no one's invited me to a firsthand demo of either of the other motion controllers reportedly in development. I don't know what they'll cost, and I don't know what software they'll operate.

Wii Motion Plus represents our second generation of motion control before anyone else has even introduced a comparable device. Yes, it could be that our current 100 percent marketshare in motion control could lose a couple of points, but... with a head-start of over 51 million controllers, I still like our chances. How much more can the expanded audience expand? (More consumers will gravitate towards Wii's) continuing redefinition of what a video game is, along with increased pick-up-and-play capabilities."- Reggie Fils-Aime

Nintendo research says that there are 'tens of millions' of gamers out there that have some interest in gaming, but haven't bought a platform yet. More than half of those surveyed were women, and the biggest share were over 25 years old.

It's safe to say that Microsoft and Sony are still acting like birdmen. They are going to release these motion devices, release some minor software and expect the 3rd party developers to do their work. They're in for a rude awakening.

Yes, you are in a nice position, but as you yourself say, Reggie, "Only the paranoid survive". Best fortify your position with some system-selling MotionPlus games, yes?

Software and price argument stands for now... but the "second generation motion controls" argument is useless, if MS and Sony jumps right into generation 3...

as far as i'm concerned, first generation should have been as sensitive as second generation. i'm sure that other people who adopted the wii at launch feel the same way.

So, Reggie, did Nintendo invite MS and Sony execs to a 'first hand demo' of the Wiimote when it was in development?

Well?

And the Wii MotionPlus argument is irrelevant. How many devs are taking advantage of it? How many big games are even using it? Red Steel and Zelda are the only huge titles I can think of, and a bunch of shovelware nonsense.

"So, Reggie, did Nintendo invite MS and Sony execs to a 'first hand demo' of the Wiimote when it was in development?"

Yes. It was called E3 2006. Any other questions?

"Red Steel and Zelda are the only huge titles I can think of, and a bunch of shovelware nonsense."

The shovelware argument is getting old. Come up with something better. Nobody is forcing you to buy crap games and those no-name developers probably aren't capable of making a good game anyway. If you think shovelware didn't exist in the massive PS1 or PS2 library, you're only kidding yourself.

"Best fortify your position with some system-selling MotionPlus games, yes?"

Sounds like a good idea. But remember, Nintendo's strategy is Blue Ocean Strategy. So that is why you're getting a Vitality Sensor next year.

But there are already titles pushing Motion Plus. Wii Sports Resort, Tiger Woods, Grand Slam Tennis, etc. And more are on the way such as Red Steel 2 and Zelda.

You don't need a plethora of software to maintain the lead position. This console generation has already proven that with Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and Smash Bros. dominating 2008.

I can't wait for more articles from Sean on this topic. Go go sword on shield topics!

@Burgers

"And the Wii MotionPlus argument is irrelevant"

How so?

"How many devs are taking advantage of it?"

We don't know yet. It's even delaying Nintendo's Motion Plus games (Wii Sports Resort was meant to be release in holiday 2008, but was delayed, leaving Wii Music alone as the only title).

" How many big games are even using it? "

This question is redundant.

"Red Steel and Zelda are the only huge titles I can think of, and a bunch of shovelware nonsense. "

They're the only ones we know of.

Come on, Burgers, you have to do better than this.

Nintendo isn't going to get involved in the war over motion controls, in fact they will quietly and slowly move on from it to focus on something else.

As for Microsoft and Sony, they'll either compete fiercly which by itself will split everything up and make it less of a phenomenon than what Nintendo got. Or they're gonna fall flat on their faces and not make a good run at all. I'd love to see the latter but either way it's not exactly going to be as smooth as some people are thinking for those two, even if it all does work well.

To me it makes no difference that WM+ is on the market right now, but without any games worth buying it for and the competitors motion controls not being out at all yet.

Call me again once there is a worthwhile WM+ motion controlled game. Or if the competition has their motion controls ready and all bundled up with some actual killer app.

Until then I'll not get up any hopes for any stuff they promise to reveal some day.

You can argue until the cows come home that they may be working on games that use it, but the reality is that the majority of big titles announced are not designed around it.

If I had spent my money on one right when it came out just so I could play sports minigames for a year, I wouldn't be a very happy camper. =)

actually Tiger woods 10 is a M+ game as is virtua tennis, and grand slam tennis.Wii Sport plus if i'm not mistaken, and Red Steel 2 will be out soon.

I'm also sure that you guys on here have a backlog of games you can play that will tide you over until whatever comes out, which is why I don't whine about lack of games.

"Nintendo isn't going to get involved in the war over motion controls, in fact they will quietly and slowly move on from it to focus on something else."

There aren't any facts to support this. In fact, everything, including Motion Plus itself, shows that Nintendo is indeed trying to fortify its motion control position.

And what do you think Zelda Wii is anyway?

Remember, the Wii remote is the standard controller. Everything else is a peripheral. Nintendo, and now other companies, have invested too much time in motion controls to simply abandon them. Miyamoto has already openly talked about the next console using a smaller version of the Wii remote technology.

It's more like a split focus strategy. First, defend the blue ocean that Nintendo created because, well, just read Sean Malstrom if you want to know why. Second, create another Blue Ocean (Vitality Sensor) since the competitors can't even react fast enough to it. Look how long it has taken them to compete with the Wii remote.

"but the reality is that the majority of big titles announced are not designed around it."

Motion Plus is a peripheral. No one has to use it. But I have seen some titles which are going to use it such as that WiiWare title, Rage of the Gladiator, and I think there's a possibility that The Grinder may use it. Oh, I think the latest NHL title featured it as well.

"If I had spent my money on one right when it came out just so I could play sports minigames for a year, I wouldn't be a very happy camper."

I didn't pay any extra money for my first motion plus. It came with Wii Sports Resort. And I for one am very happy to have spent $20 on a second one so that I can play the game with friends. It's quite fun.

Natal is coming out next Nov with 14 titles [though whether just updates of former 360 titles with optional Natal or if any will be Natal exclusive is anyone's guess].

As long as the likes of Rare are working on Sports game for the device then there's no reason to worry really. Sure the sport fans will love it [depending on what it is], but it wouldn't be exciting nor innovative to everyone else I presume.

Zelda Wii with exclusive WM+ will be the next step in motion controls, though [yes, I know RS2 is out early next year, but come on, it's going to receive less attention from the industry than a new Zelda].

I look forward to my RS2 copy nevertheless, but Zelda Wii will be the tastier meat for me personally.

well they want to take over the world. there's still tons of people around the world that wouldn't touch video games with a 10 foot pole. so there's potentially tons of people to convert. but its going to be very tough for the remaining people. if anyone could come close it would only be nintendo. sony and MS just don't have systems that have mass appeal outside of the regulars. other mediums, movies...tv, music, everyone are into those.

realistically, MS and sony are going to encounter huge growing pains with their motion controls. number one, this 'hardcore' crowd are pretty much set in their ways. a new way to play will only cause internal struggles since the system originally came with classic game pads. two, sustaining software support is going to be tougher than they think. what if a company makes a motion controlled game, and it bombs, will they make a sequel? what's their plan going into this? support both control methods? xbox and ps3 devs are so use to putting all their efforts into the visuals. how will they adapt implementing motion control inputs? if they hope to do 1 to 1 controls, that is going to be difficult programming, with a huge learning curve. nintendo isn't going to teach them; they've got a lot to do to catch up. they're going to need bigger teams to do that, and still have enough manpower to do quality visuals.

casual :"i bought a wii two years ago, and i have three games for it, wii sports, wii fit, and raving rabbids

i love my wii"

*sony swings in through a window*

sony: "MY FAIR MAIDEN! ive come to rescue you from terrible graphics!"

casual: "but i do not care about the graphics, it is fun!"

sony: "nonsense!! graphics are everything, havent you seen? blu ray has phased out the dvd entirely! and dont worry about gameplay, we have the same motion controls! and you get a free game when you buy ours too!"

casual:"i do?! what is it? snowboarding? dancing? tennis?"

sony:"nooo, hah hah hah! its a game where the EVIL DARK MINIONS OF SATAN HAVE ESCAPED HELL AND ARE ASSAULTING HELMS DEEP, QUICKLY, GRAB YOUR SWORD AND SHIELD, WE WILL OBLITERATE THEM ALL, REMEMBER, BODY SHOTS TAKE TOO LONG, YOU NEED TO SLICE OFF THEIR HEADS!

LOOK AT THAT GORE GO!"

casual:"oh...well, um-"

sony:" IM NOT DONE YET B*TCH!

....

Sony:"okay im done now..."

casual:" im not sure that sounds fun to me...how much will it be?"

sony:" weeeeeeeeell.....50 for the eyetoy, 60 for a controller, but you actually need two of them so another 60 on top of that, plus, you cant move around since we didnt think of that, so you will need to pay 60 for a sixaxis controller to use as your joystick, the games will be 60 buck on average, but shovelware goes for 50, and-"

casual:" okay no, just shut up, stop there

get the hell out of my house...and im going to bill you for that window too"

and thats the story of sony trying to expand the audience, and why they will fail

how exactly is the motion plus not free for the solo player aka the one who will/could play adventure game ?
It's freaking sold with a game!! and the best motion 1:1 game ever , and probably the most diverse there will ever be !

it's 50millions against 5 and 4 million projected. It's quite fair since those two other controls can't even point like the wiimote2005. Only slow and dragging for sony , and well nothing at all for microsoft except the lack of tracking finger.
