November 13, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Nintendo in general

Mario...Link...Samus...these are the names you know and love. Nintendo has built up an absolutely incredible amount of franchise characters over the years. We've come to know and love these heroes of gaming. They are one of the major reasons why we love to follow Nintendo! You're not going to get these characters anywhere else. When Nintendo is working on another installment for these storied franchises, we all drool in anticipation of launch day.

While Nintendo makes their bread-and-butter on these icons of the industry, they've also built up an absolutely massive amount of companion characters, supporting cast, and one-off appearances. These are the guys that we know of, but they don't get much time to stand in the spotlight. They're usually far off in the background, just doing their part to move the story along. That's precisely why we've put together this feature. GoNintendo and GameDaily want to pluck these lesser-knowns from the sidelines, and put them in the big game!

Make sure to check out GameDaily for the second part of this list!

Falco

falco.png

On the list of supporting characters, Falco is fairly high up on the visibility charts. His appearances in the Star Fox series, as well as the Smash Bros. franchise has definitely helped him with his awareness level. Longtime fans of the blue bird know Falco has one hell of a wise-ass, but he's got a heart of gold deep down inside. Sounds like the perfect personality for an adventure of his own!

Personally, I'd love to play as Falco out on one of his own missions. You just know that this guy has done some missions that he's not too proud of. He had to build up that tough exterior somewhere! To be completely honest, I'd love to see Falco in title similar to StarFox Adventures, but with a little more time spent in the Arwing. I know Falco's a jerk, but I want to learn all about how he got to be that way!

Meta Knight

meta_knight5.jpg

Now I know the Kirby fans are with me on this one. Once again, we have a character that has more recently enjoyed a bit more fame through the Smash Bros. franchise. Actually, from what I understand, there are millions of Brawl fans that think this character should be stricken from the roster! That's fine by me, as it would give him more time to star in his own adventure!

Kirby this and Kirby that...it's time to let Meta Knight take us on an outing. Once again, we have a character that is clearly a bit demented, but there's something deep inside him that keeps tugging his actions towards the side of good. Him and Kirby may not get along, but you know he'd never end up dealing the final death blow to that tough cream puff. It's about time we got to take on Meta Knight so we could see his take on the situation.

Toadsworth

290550_480px_toadsworth_old_super.jpg

Surely there's more to Toadsworth life than just playing second fiddle to Princess Peach. Hell, he's not even good at that job! Mario and Luigi are often running about, saving Princess Peach from the clutches of evil. If Toadsworth is always at her side, how do these kidnappings happen so easily?! Perhaps Toadsworth is just a tad too old to be holding his current position!

I think Toadsworth would make for a great coming-of-age story. He's clearly a bit on the weenie side when it comes to being a hero, but there's no doubt that the old coot could pull off a rather brainy expedition. Match Toadsworth up with some elderly friends along the way, and I'm sure they could conquer whatever evil stood in their path. Either that, or Toadsworth could become the new mascot for the elderly expanded audience. Toadsworth's Shuffleboard, anyone?

Professor E. Gadd

01_ProfessorEGadd_1187068322.jpg

Now here's a guy that doesn't get enough screen time. This poor sucker doesn't even have what it takes to be a Smash Bros. character, at least, in Nintendo's eyes. That's not the amount of respect we should pay to a man that played such a crucial role in the titles he has appeared in! Time for the professor to leave his lab and greet the world in a grand fashion.

Just think of the possibilities that E. Gadd could bring to a game! He's clearly a whiz with all sorts of robotics and gadgets, which could make for compelling gamplay in and of itself. How about a game where you have to scour the game world to find random mechanical parts in order to build tools, and then reach new areas? Think of it as a Metroid-like title, except it has the humor of the Mario and Luigi series. I's say, sign me up!

Wart

WartTwo.jpg

You knew I'd have to continue my crusade to get Wart back in another game. I'm tired of just wanting him to appear somewhere within a new game. I want this guy to have his own game. He's remained quite for far too long. I don't care if he was a figment of Mario's imagination! I think Mario needs to take another nap so that Wart can come out and play! Mario has to sleep sometime!

I've always imagined a fantastic story of Bowser Vs. Wart, where they're both going out of their way to prove themselves the bigger evil. Once again, I see the humor of the Mario and Luigi story coming into play in a big way. Bowser has had more than enough time to try and kidnap Princess Peach successfully. Isn't Wart ever going to get a chance to run with his master plan once more? I'm pretty sure he's be ridding the world of a particular vegetable, given the second chance.

Make sure to check out GameDaily for the second part of this list!

1. Turn off the bold.

2. On the GoNintendo side, none of these characters deserve their own game. MetaKnight, at best, should just have more subgames like MetaKnightmare. Or be playable more often.

3. On the GameDaily side, Toad is the only character I can agree with. Goomba? Blooper? Lakitu? Boo? SERIOUSLY?

This was the worst list I've ever seen, and theirs was even worse than the GoNintendo one.

Just generic Mario enemies that nobody gives a damn about (except Blooper and Boo). Not to mention, they left out Shy Guy? REALLY?

This could've been an interesting article, but no.

No Ganondorf. No Zelda/Sheik. No Waluigi. No Regigigas. Nothing.

I am very sad to see that Waluigi is not on this list. Even after Charles Martinet gave a Walugi Game his blessing. Tsk tsk.

The Kirby anime (Japanese version) does a good enough job of explaining Meta Knight's motivations... even if it's not 100% canon I'd say it's the closest thing to a backstory for a Kirby character you'll ever get.

I hope Captain Falcon is in one of the top 5.

The GameDaily side of that looks like pure laziness. "Let's take the first five minor characters we can think of."

Why are they all from Mario?

"We weren't thinking of NSMBWii. (Whistles casually)."

@Q_Mulative

I don't normally agree with you, but I agree whole-heartedly here.

GameDaily's list was the laziest, most uninspired thing I've ever seen, and they didn't even put Shy Guy.

Toad was the only decent choice, and that's stretching it.

GoNintendo's is better, but that's not even saying much. It's still bad.

Only ones on the list that really deserve there own game would be Falco and Meta Knight, and possibly Blooper just cause they're that great. Everyone else is pretty useless though. I cannot believe Captain Falcon isn't on the list by the way.

yeah a falco game would have been great during the stealth genre boom , and a prof E.Gadd game too. Fludd it's just a great gameplay tool . Still hoping for a sunshine planet !

Other than that the selection is really poor , no really thought into it at all.

F-Zero.

I like the GN side of this list, but I didn't bother looking at the GameDaily part. E. Gadd & Meta Knight definately need their own games (especially the way you described them, RMC).
I would add Bowser (M&L3 had Bowser, but it wasn't really his own game), Zelda/Shiek, and Ganon to the list.

Worst List Ever! What were you guys drinking and smoking while blind folded with a gun to your head after your brain exploded.

I would expect waluigi, sheik, heck I would even put the dead bounty hunters from MP3 on there. The only one that deserves to be on there is meta knight.

bad list

metaknight, sure

falco, YES

simply because it would encourage an adventures type game, but with gunplay instead of staffplay, and might be open world, considering falco is more of a bounty hunter than a "do it cause its right" kinda guy (like fox)

So basically, any minor enemy found in a Mario-only game is deemed worthy of eligibility.

Me? R.O.B. is due his own game as a character. Or Zelda. Or Captain Falcon.

this list is very hard to take seriously with 8 of the 10 characters coming from the mario series, we have enough spinoffs of that series.

people need to realize that Captain Falcon is the main character of the F-zero series, most of the storyline runs through him.

now if we are talking about a non racing f-zero game.....

Aside from Toad, that whole half of the list...kind of makes no sense to me. I can see the merit in making a Mario game that stars a bunch of Mario monsters and the goal is to beat Mario. THAT could be interesting.

Where's Midna?

Falco and Meta-Knight could warrant their own games, too.

Meta Knight did have his own adventure in Kirby Super Star Ultra as an extra bonus for the DS version. Secondly, Waluigi should start off like Luigi did and star with Wario in a Wario and Waluigi title then Waluigi can have his own adventure game and platformer series

From the GameDaily list: Just Toad everything else were horrible choices... did Gamedaily think this was "top 10 Mario characters that need their own game"?

From this list I'd be fine with Falco and Metaknight and only with the idea of having Toadsworth be a mascot of an "elder gaming generation" campaign or something.

Nintendo should have Toadsworth be the mascot of the DSi XL dictionary they are including with the DSi XL, or a "Bookworm" type game if they are really serious about marketing to an older generation...

Toad is the only character I see ever having a shot at getting a game. I can imagine a cute Lakitu DS game, and a Meta-Knight 2.5D Wii/DS title, but I don't see either of those actually happening. Epona has nearly as good a chance of getting her own game.

Nintenhorses: Hyrule - Epona

To go along with what MoldyClay said, most of these deserve playable roles in the games they usually star in, at best. Not full games.

I'm down with the idea of a Goombario (or better still, Goombella) game, but GameDaily's seems like a different list, almost; instead of five Nintendo characters, it was five Mario Nintendo characters.

At least RMC brought in Meta Knight and Falco, both of which I agree fully with.

But really, how about Ganondorf? Or Star Wolf? Maybe some of those other Metroid hunters, or even Ridley?

Waluigi.
Bowser. (See: Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi 3)
Zelda.
Brian Bradley. (Hotel Dusk... >.>)
And a crap-ton others, those were just off the top of my head. GD's portion really was lacking, just as everyone says.

Also, Toad was the main character in Wario's Woods. Not sure if that counts...

why should any of these worthless characters get anything? i know reasons were given, but i'll ask again...WHY?

none of these choices have anything going for them. they are all secondary characters for a reason...they have ZERO appeal.

falco, maybe, but i'm not sure in what way he could be used outside of a...you know, a traditional star fox game, but then why not just use fox?

Toad was already the central character in Wario Woods, a little-known game from the NES era and the only NES game to be given an ESRB rating. Also, Toadsworth (Kinoji in Japan) also has a central role in a Japan-only game.
My suggestions include Waluigi, Bowser, and Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy. I predict that the latter will appear in future games, even if she does not have a game under her name.

Toad HAS his own game already. He's the starring character of Wario's Woods. So GameDaily's only decent choice is irrelevant because it's already happened. The rest of the GameDaily list is crap. Goomba? Seriously? What would you even do?

As for the GoNintendo list, MetaKnight would be cool and maybe Falco. But that's about it. I don't know if they others could hold their own for a full game but maybe I'm wrong.

I'd love to see a King Dedede game. Not sure what you'd do, but I'd like to see one. I'd also really like to see a Waluigi game with a completely bizarre plot.

I'd say Bowser should get his own game too, but Bowser's Inside Story basically is his own game.

It seemed like there were a few too many Mario-enemies that made the list. Really, I wish they would give Daisy her own game....it would just take knowing what sort of game would fit her best. Probably some kind of outdoorsy type of action or sports game to go along with her tomboy attitude, and probably in a more casual set of clothes instead of a dress.
