Three New Super Mario Bros. Wii reviews...
Story Feedback

@Bentendo
I disagree about your logic over the 8.9 score. I love that they're able to be very precise with their scores. It says that he felt the game was so close to being a 9, but that he just felt that a few of the issues he had with it make it not quite there.
I personally hate score systems that force .5 increments, as it can force the reviewer to score lower or higher than they really feel about the game.

Seriously, go purchase the game and play it. Most reviews of this game will be positive. Quit whining about a 8.9 rating review score. Go have fun in Mario land.

@MARl0
I guess I see your point, but I'm not going to lie and say I agree with you. I sort of prefer the F-A grading system because regardless of the score people aren't going to complain that it was THAT CLOSE TO GETTING DESIRED SCORE.
@Scarpine
I can't help it. :p If there is one thing in this world I can't stand it's games, even ones I don't care for, getting an 8.9. It's my least favorite score of all time.

I wanted it to get an 8.8, just for old time's sake.
The uproar of people pretending that was a bad score, or that TP deserved better than that.
So good.
I think 8.9 is silly, but I'm not butthurt.
From what I am hearing about the game, anywhere from 8-9 is a good score.

Sorry, I just watched this and everything the reviewer said in the video was true about the whole 'playing it safe' thing.
Probably the only thing stupid about the review was:
1. Comparing it to Galaxy at the start
2. The reviewer sounds bored.

IGN's review was weird.
Did they even mention the pause when getting an item and how that effects other players?
They seemed to leave out a lot of things. And the rant against the fanboys was kind of weird.
Although this is a classic 2D Mario title, which we haven't had in a while, it is true that it should also be compared to current gaming standards, and I do agree with the online thing because I don't have many friends that are very good at games that will be playing the title with me.
I wonder where Innervate is to claim that this title 'doesnt deserve to sell' because it's getting sub-9.0 scores. I would never claim such a thing, which is why I'm still purchasing it day one =)
EDIT: Gamespot's review was odd, too. They said it was 'dissapointing' no classic controller support was included -- yeah, how does one control tilt platforms with a classic controller again?... And they mention the controls but don't mention that the 1 button also function as a run button? Please, somebody tell me the 1 button is a run button and not just an item-pickup button. :\
@Bentendo
Yes, that's true, I'm not worried about it myself, but it's weird that they wouldn't mention it in a review when people were talking about it pre-release, that's all.

I assume you are referring to playing it safe and lost opportunities. "Lost opportunities" is not an attack on Nintendo. It's very true that the items mentioned that would of been awesome to see are lost opportunities.
I would of loved to be able to play this online with one of my friends in another state. I would of loved to be able to record (in-game) my super skills and show them off to friends and the Internet community. All stuff that "other" developers on "other" consoles would of included. So, yeah.. playing it safe and lost opportunities.

"Did they even mention the pause when getting an item and how that effects other players?"
Almost every preview that mentioned that said that it wasn't a big deal at all.

The only thing about Craig-IGN's review that I found awkward was that he complained about something that was never a part of the game in the first place - the inability to save replay data. Yeah, it would have been interesting, seeing as how the game itself does it for Super Guide and Skill Videos, but it's not exactly terrible to not have either.
Not sure if that tidbit factored into his score(not that I really care), but it was just an odd thing to worry about when the game itself is the more important issue, not the lack of something that no other Mario platform game has ever included.
I'm a little at odds with his notion of Online Play as well, and his pretty blatant fuss of demanding that he's right about it(and that anyone who disagrees is defending Nintendo, etc etc). I should be supporting him really, because I have no one to play with. However, knowing how bad lag can be on Brawl(which is more or less a platformer, and also requires split second control), I'm just not too interested in being disappointed by lag-deaths and whatnot. It works in Mario Kart, sure, but they kind of cheat a little bit with their updating on everyone's status for that game.
I also did not expect it to have online, so it's not like I'd bother to drop its score any for not having it. Although I suppose, if they anticipated a sequel with online play, it might make sense for this game to have a lower score. I just don't see that happening on this console, though..

What about 8.8? The backlash was so awesome it spawned a meme!
Anyway, pay no attention to reviews, you know you want this game.

This. Even when I thought I hated it, for like 3 months, I ultimately am now getting it day one, for my birthday (getting it Sunday; Can't play until Tuesday).
@Scarpine
This a million times.
@Burgers
Classic Controller would just map the motion controls to a button, I would think.
@MAGNUS-8M
Well, it was probably brought up because Brawl allows you to save Replay data, and I'm pretty sure the Gold/Silver remakes on DS have battle replay data as well. All he did was say it was a missed opportunity, and it is. Just not an important one.
As for online, there's no reason the game shouldn't have had it, no matter how many times Wii Folder says "it was a design choice. Clearly you don't understand".
The console has the capabilities, and lag isn't that bad for EVERYONE (personally, I just want it for playing against two other people who don't even live that far away; it's just a time issue with getting to gather all of us at once), but Nintendo felt it necessary to alienate a bunch of people.

I suppose classic controller could have mapped the 'shake' to a button, and the tilt controls to the analog shoulder buttons or second analog stick. I never thought of that.
Again, though, could somebody confirm that there is a run button in the game?

I have to agree with Craig on online, it should of been in it. Sorry, but it should. All of my friends live too far from where I live, so that would of been a nice factor to have online so I could play with them.
That is why I refuse to buy this game, but I am open to renting it.

I have never cared about the inclusion of online play before in a game, but it seems in a title like this it would be a no-brainer. I still don't really care too much that this game doesn't have online, but it does seem like a missed opportunity.
Also, I'm sure you all remember the design in the first level of Classic mode in Melee; how amazing would it have been if this game looked like that!!
Regardless, I am SO pumped to go to the Nintendo World Store launch party tomorrow to pick this up!

@Burgers
Oh! I forgot to answer that (since I knew), lol.
The website has a Controls section, and it shows that "1" is indeed "Dash".
I am pretty sure picking stuff up is accessed by holding 1 and shaking, but it might also just be the 1 button. I forget.

No online = rental. I can only play this for so long till it becomes a bit boring.
November 13, 2009 at 11:50 am
Considering how much people are still complaining about the pause when you pick up items in multiplayer, I don't see why most of the same people are complaining about the lack of multiplayer. Have we already forgotten the amount lag that Brawl had?
November 13, 2009 at 11:50 am
@MAGNUS-8M
He also whined about no online. In a game as frantic as New Super Mario Bros., online lag would kill the experience.

You individuals who complain about lag have been using the Wii to long. Experience XBL, and you will know how a game should run online.
Also doesn't Mario Kart Wii run pretty flawless online? Indeed it does, so why can't NSMBW?

@InvalidRobot
There's noticeable lag on MKWii. Try firing a red shell at someone and watch it hover behind them for awhile before the hit animation kicks in.
It's just covered up well by the need for there not to be 1:1 responsiveness between players. A second lag or two is fine.
I think a highly time-based competitive platformer demands better latency. I think the Wii could've achieved it, but nintendo probably didn't want to bother with online because it goes against their Wii "play together/family" iniative

I don´t know what are all these reviewers and some of you complaining about. I still don´t have the game but I will definitely buy it because it´s a new Mario adventure and it has all what it should:
- New power ups (and probably the most in a 2d mario game)
- Old and new enemies (lots of them from mario bros 3 which I missed in mario world)
- 70+ levels.
- More of the same Mario mechanics that we have loved since the first Mario game.
Online is totally overrated. Try having friends invited to your home instead. We used to play hours and hours of mario kart 64 and smash bros melee and believe me, I don´t think I can have this much fun online. It feels way better to taunt and curse with your friends around (it´s not the same with a headset).
Some are asking for innovation? What for? Mario kart did it with double dash and everybody complained. And what innovation do you find in all the FPS that xbox 360 and ps3 have. Modern Warfare 2? Definitely looks great and I´ll probably buy it, but in terms of gameplay, isn´t it the same as all the previous COD and FPS out there. Just aim and shoot at the enemy (but with different visuals and settings)

Also, is it bad that I'm angry about IGN's 8.9 and not Gamespot's 8.5? I mean, it's like he was trying to be controversial by giving it .1 less than a nine. Scores should always be in increments of five, because it makes no since how they calculated in their mind "hmmm, you know, this game isn't a 9 but it's not an 8.5 either". It's just stupid.
Anyway, that's not to say it's a bad score.
