November 17, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

"I'm not satisfied with the volumes that we do on a Fire Emblem, for example, or a Battalion Wars. These are high-quality games that I have challenged the team to think about: How do we up our marketing on these types of titles to do a more effective job? And I think you are going to see that more with a title like [2010 Wii shooter] Sin & Punishment 2, where it is much more targeted to the active gamer. It is a title that I believe we need to do a better job getting out in front of." - Reggie Fils-Aime

Reggie also talked about selling the MotionPlus to consumers. The big guy obviously wanted Red Steel 2 out on the market this holiday to push things even further, but we all know that's not happening.

"Our hope was that Red Steel 2 would have launched in this holiday season. That's a title that we had always looked at to be a key part of the strategy to drive the installed base of Wii MotionPlus. Having said that, even without the benefit of that launch, we've sold over four million at this point in time. That's a very strong start."

Finally, Reggie confirmed that the Vitality Sensor and software for the device will be shown off at E3 2010. Unfortunately, Reggie would not confirm that the 'software' shown off would be actual games in the works, instead of just tech demos.

Nintendo was likely praying that Red Steel 2 would help grow the Motion Plus install base, which is needed thanks to Nintendo's poor planning (or unforeseen difficulties) that resulted in them delaying their Motion Plus games. Nintendo made a critical mistake in announcing the Vitality Sensor too early. Now all the shock that would have came about from showing it off with software is now lost forever.

Well, Reggie shouldn't have left the resposibility of keeping WM+ momentum to a third party... It would've been better if Nintendo themselves released a WM+ compatible game for the holidays.

Oh and... Wii Vitality Sensor is for the expanded audience, so get over it people. :|

"Well, Reggie shouldn't have left the resposibility of keeping WM+ momentum to a third party... "

Sony and Microsoft depend exclusively on 3rd parties growing their install base and fueling their momentum, why not Nintendo? I still agree they should have done better.

Anyone remember how Nintendo "marketed" Battalion Wars 2?

They gave 1 blogger who ask for it in the first place a review copy.

To be honest, I somewhat doubt RS2 is going to be successful. I fear that the cel-shading look is going to drive a lot of potential buyers away. After all, how many succesful cel-shading games have there been ?

As for the quality of RS2: I won't believe it til I see it.

Other than that:Fire Emblem, Batallion Wars (and probably SP2) aren't that great. They're niche games, so what did they expect ?

"How do we up our marketing on these types of titles to do a more effective job?"

Uh... By marketing them PERIOD!
Can't say I saw any form of marketing for Fire Emblem or Battalion Wars.

I also liked how he never mentioned Excite Bots, a game where pretty much nobody knew existed till AFTER it game out.

Same goes for the new DS Zelda game. Sure we "core" games that go to sites like this are seeing the information, but I haven't seen TV sports, or paper ads or anything, just little press releases.

I agree with this, I'm still thinking Wii Vitality Sensor will equal a Nursing Home Relaxation Monitor the way Iwata talked about it at E3, lack of software to show it off = major fail.

@joeshabadoo
Exactly. Excitebots shows a major marketing FAILTALITY on Nintendo's part.

Battalion Wars 2 was mediocre, enjoyed the whole first game but the second felt repetitive before the end (some boats weren't enough news, sorry) online was fun until hackers came.
So I would rate the first game 8.5/10, second game 7/10.

I think some of you don't see the sales potential of stress relief/awareness software through the sensor. Just as big as WiiFit.

Do I think there will be some awesome games to use the sensor? Eh, too soon to really say. Do I care if awesome games come out that use the sensor? Not really. I don't see myself picking one up unless there is really something crazy released in conjunction.

Will they take the tech in the senor and the software to interpret the data and incorporate that into the outer-casing of whatever you hold and use to control games on the next console? YES. THAT's when it will be awesome; when all the capabilities/possibilities of the sensor are simply part of the standard package

I think the vitality sensor will be pimp.

@coffeewithchess

The smell of death and age and decay of a nursing home fills my memory's nostrils every time you say 'nursing home monitor' and the cries of the depraved, senile old people talking to the ghostly memories of their long dead family members swirls around my ears like the smoke of fall leaves... The dark echoing drip of past pain sends circles through the pool of my mind and the smell just keeps wafting... the decaying dirtied diaper smell of the nursing home...

Please stop calling the 'Vitality Sensor' the 'Nursing Home Monitor.' 'Vitality' and 'Nursing Home' ... two things that conjure opposing feelings.

I kinda doubt it. When I saw the Balance Board for the first time, I thought the concept alone was genius and it would be a hit. With the Vitality Sensor, I get an "ugly step child" or "this is what happens when success goes to your head" feeling when I look at it.

I want Sin and Punishment to come in a metal box with the original boxart on the case. I also want a bullet though it like with Wanted, even though I'm not sure there is one bullet to be seen in the game. I want post cards, T shirts, action figures, posters, commercials, coffee mugs, school folders, and hats and caps with Sin and Punishment 2 branded on them.

Black face Isa ftw.

Also, I want more games appealing to the same crowd as Sin and Punishment appeals to. No vitality sensors, we have enough peripherals for that crowd already.

What 1st party Motion Plus games were delayed, exactly? Do you have any examples? Any at all?

Not to mention that officially for NA only ONE first party game (Zelda) has even been announced to support Wii MotionPlus. Most of their upcoming titles (Galaxy 2, S&P2, Endless Ocean 2) do not support it.

Red Steel already secured its status as a B- class of game, it has to try to hard to defeat its stigma but come on, this is Ubisoft.

Exactly. Nintendo showed it of WAY too soon. "Look! We also have this but it's not finished yet, you have to wait a year! We are showing you now so you don't stray away!"

We have to wait nearly a year for more concrete info? At least with Brawl, another game shown too early, Sakurai had the Dojo, which was fantastic in building hype for the game. Plus the game was already destined to be a hit since Smash Bros. is a huge franchise.

These would be games that were not announced yet, but will be at E3 now thanks to delays. Wii Sports Resort was meant for a 2008 holiday release, but was delayed into Summer of 2009. This proved that motion plus development is difficult than they anticipated, and so they either canceled or delayed the other games that are to use it.

They wouldn't release their answer to competitive motion devices and not make games for it. Expect rumors and announcements of motion plus games for release in 2010 over the next 6 months, with E3 2010 being where they show motion plus and vitality sensor software.

In the case of Fire Emblem due to it being released one week before Super Mario Galaxy the marketing teams budget was probably elsewhere. Also don't forget negative internet marketing from the whole Path of Radiance Transfer feature not working properly due to not being tested (if you had any Path of Radiance saves on Easy mode the data transfer would crash).

tl;dr. Give the marketing team the space and budget they need and playtest your games properly.

Borderlands is also a cel-shaded shooter and it's been doing a lot better than I expected. It actually wasn't supposed to be cel-shaded at first, but they changed it later on and I don't think it really changed many people's positive opinions on it (speaking of which, I plan on getting Borderlands sometime down the road).

Well it's nice to see he acknowledged Battalion Wars 2 (THAT GAME IS MORE UNDERRATED THAN ZACK AND WIKI! Seriously, other than right now when the hell's the last time you heard it brought up? Meanwhile people are STILL saying "please buy Zack and Wiki!" two years after it's release [I got it when it first came out, by the way]), and that Sin and Punishment 2 will probably get better marketing.

I'm interested in seeing what software comes out of the Vitality Sensor. Nintendo already broke one of their old rules by showing off a product without the software to back it, so they're gonna need something big for the "core" to want it. Expanded audience might eat it up, but the core will be harder to convince.

Thanks, I totally forgot about Borderlands (which is surprising considering the fact I stumble upon the commercial nearly every time I watch TV).

However, I still think that the cel-shading look doesn't really help RS2 (after all - a lot of good games with cel-shading like XIII flopped), but I guess time will tell.

As for the Vitality Sensor: Let me keep my dream of an Eternal Darkness kind of game that adapts according to the pulse (or whatever else it can measure)...

I think Reggie is starting to wake up a bit.

I dont care what excuses some of you idiots have, Battalion Wars 2 and Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn CLEARLY are some of the best games on the system and if you never played either, then do yourself a favor and get these two fantastic games. Excitebots was also a pretty darn good game that never got advertising, and from what has been said, Disaster Day of Crisis is a decent game that america could have had if nintendo advertised the game correctly.

If nintendo, and the third parties, had advertised these games correctly, perhaps people would have a different view about wii because lots of people only think the wii has Wii Sports, Fit, and Mario games and thats it. Hopefully, Reggie stays true to his words and Sin and Punishment 2 gets the recognition it likely deserves.

.....and does anyone really think Red Steel 2 is going to be truely good?

I think the vitality sensor will be a source of surprise at E3. Besides Thinking about it Wii sports was a "tech demo" to marktet the Wii remote and motion controls to people back when the Revolution debuted.

also niche or not Sin and Punishment 2 will score big with fans of Treasure's previous work and considering this game is a Shmup, with proper marketing you're going to have a lot of old schoolers come out of the woodwork for this one.

I don't even have to explain how Red Steel 2 is going to do with the people who want to swing swords, and can actually do it.

I can't even explain how crucial it is for there to be more games where you can apply the gameplay mechanics of WS/WSR (swordplay, bow and arrow shooting, ect ect)to actual monster slaying and adventuring. Games need to be made to fill that large void.
