Barring any major secrets that gamers have somehow missed out on, we know that Princess Peach is not a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Miyamoto gave some lame answer concerning dress physics as to why the princess doesn't make a playable appearance. I call 100% bull on that, because this title would have been the perfect time to reintroduce the playable cast of Super Mario Bros. 2. How could Nintendo miss out on this opp?!

I agree 100%. That excuse was indeed bull (even though I think it was a joke). Still, bull. And for those saying it wouldn't flow with the story, how about AFTER you beat the game? They could change the story up for a 2nd play through if they wanted.

I don't find it to be bull at all. From a development standpoint all character's need to be around the same size in both height and weight otherwise gameplay is not evened out.

Not to mention Peach is the damsel in distress, not the hero. If anything Toadette should have been playable.

It was probably for the best they didn't add a female character you can play as. Nintendo also wanted to keep the integrity of the level designs in order, which is why they prohibit you from taking Yoshi with you outside the stages meant for him. A character that plays different from the Mario Bros and toad would compromise that.

Why can't we rescue a different princess for once? One that isn't so helpless and gets captured every other day? Bad enough she could be replaced with an inanimate object, and Mario games wouldn't change a bit.

What!? RMC, you're crazy if you think what we got is anything less than genius! Every decision Miyamoto makes is right, and this game is waaay more fun with Ala Gold and Buckem Berry! You don't know what you're talking about. This game is NEW Super Mario Bros. Wii, not Super Mario Bros. 2. And Peach can't be playable. She needs to be kidnapped or continuity's sake. It's the winning formula!

My absolute best guess would be that yes, the dress thing was just a strange, Japanese answer. I have a feeling that Nintendo opted to leave her as unplayable was because if she were playable, she'd be able to float, giving her clear advantage over the other players. Conversely, if she were in with the same playable physics as the other characters, her inability to float or retain her Peach-like qualities would not go over well with the rabid audience who expects such.

An option to choose any character for Single Player to match the characters with their Mario 2 style traits would've been a nice bonus, but I sadly think she was left out for equality reasons. Pity, but maybe next time! I hope they make it up to New Super Mario Bros Wii 3 and have a yellow box with Raccoon suits again. :3

IMHO the idea of having 4 equal players was genious. it's so much more fun this way and there's no fighting or disapointment at the beginning. people complaining just think for a second how much of an improvement this actually is over Mario Bros 2.

Also, if peach would drop at a speed equal to Mario's, we would see her underwear all the time. CREEPY.

edit: Looking at the picture in this article makes me realize how much i actually hate Peach. sooo useless. the best scene in NSMBW was after some castles: Peach is right there in the ship. But all she can do... "help!" - aaaand she's gone.

The dress excuse was a joke. He just likes to laugh at our expense for wanting to play her.

And I'm not even kidding. From a Japanese stand point, they just lol at your misfortunes and move on.

I don't honestly see why she would need to float.

Saying "We couldn't have her float for this game" is a hell of a lot more acceptable than "We didn't put her in, because we were too lazy to make floating physics and wanted everyone to be bland"

And for the record, I played the game with my girlfriend, my mother and my grandmother last night on my birthday, and they all agreed that having two Toads was stupid.

My girlfriend would've preferred Peach, but also normal Toad and or Toadette instead of Bucken Berry and Ala Gold (lol). Although, it makes sense WHY normal Toad wasn't used, now, but really, the 'colored' Toads could've been the ones you save, instead of normal Toad. And still no excuse for a lack of a female/Toadette.

My mom, who is a huge fan of classic Mario games, pointed out that she kept looking at Mario & Luigi while playing, because the Toads didn't stand out, and she felt that even still, they looked too similar despite the Yellow and Blue palette swap.

The "OH MAN, WHO WANTS TO PLAY WARIO WITHOUT HIS SPECIAL MOVES?" or "PEACH WITHOUT FLOAT?" or "THESE CHARACTERS WOULDN'T MAKE SENSE" arguments are just silly. They don't need the special moves or floating, especially if it makes sense in the context of the game.

And as for making sense, two completely random, nameless, irrelevant Toads made more sense? Nah.

I'm bummed by character choice and no unlockables (because even if you wanna rage that Peach needs to be the damsel, no reason you can't unlock her. Luigi saves Luigi in Galaxy. Band-aid Girl saves Band-aid Girl in Super Meat Boy. Not relevant)... but the biggest disappointment is not being able to pick your character as player 1.

I want to be Luigi or Blue Toad, not Mario. It's a huge bummer that we can't choose. Even if they kept the same stats and are just model replacements, I have no desire to be Mario, but oh well.

How's that Samus video coming along?

On topic!
I don't care about lack of Peach in the game, lack of online is the main reason I'm not buying it.

Gotta love how every tom, dick and harry online think they know more than the greatest game developer of all time.

Fact of the matter is this game is not about character selection. At any point did you stop and just enjoy playing the game?

Miyamoto is no god, and he even admitted himself that he has made mistakes. I do agree that Peach being excluded was for the best. She has no business tossing fireballs or wearing suits.

@Totodile

Another thing to add. She was only put in SMB2 because they ran out of characters. Back then, they didn't have the roster of Mario characters they do now. They even had to make Luigi play the other female character in Doki Doki Panic.

Oh my, what MoldyClay said wasn't even negative in the least bit. He just said that using two Toad's was unoriginal. If you take offense to that, then wow.

Miyamoto is great but not the best. Maybe one of the best Japanese developers, but certainly not in the whole industry.

Dumbest thing ever.. You have to save Peach so HOW CAN YOU BE RESCUED BY YOURSELF????

Also.. There is no difference in how characters behave in this game so she wouldn't be flying anywhere if she was a playable character.

@Hongo

Miyamoto is the best in the whole industry, and has been recognized as such... saying he can do no wrong is a little silly, however. Peach's dress = magic physics, a no go.

I think that probably back in the day it was fine to have the princess float her way to success but it wouldnt be fair nowadays. It just wouldnt make sense, co-op wise.

Besides remember that smb2 was just rly a pallete swap of another game so in theory she should have never been playable.

Uhh...maybe because Peach is the entire reason the Bros and toads are on this adventure in the first place?
Don't bring up the Luigi saves Luigi in Galaxy thing also, as that doesn't make sense to begin with.

@coffeewithchess

That's the dumbest reason not to get this game. Not every game with multiplayer needs an online function. Brawl and Smash Up can't even handle well online, so what makes you think this would be any different if it were online? If you ask me, I think it would've been WORSE if it had online, looking at Brawl and Smash Up's online button lag-fest.

But whatever. :P

It would have been fun to see all 4 characters trying to stop Bowser and save the kingdom. If the floating was an issue, then they should have put her in the game without the floating ability. They could even dress her differently, if that would make more sense - like they did for Mario Hoops.

I REALLY wanted to live out my SMB2 dreams in the new game, hence my disappointment at the no inclusion of Peach. Technical issue, whatever. Why didn't that stop them in the 8-bit days?

For that matter, why didn't they include Toad instead of the generic yellow and blue mushroom retainers?

@WiiFolder

If that really were the issue, why did they not bother to give Mario, Luigi and the retainers all different abilities instead of playing the same?

I would have let the no float thing slide just to have her in there and dressing like a penguin and other such silliness.

For a Princess, they could have used Daisy, or had a scenario similar to the "dream" concept of SMB2 or the "save the world" ideas of the RPGs.

It's because this time, all the players play the same, and Peach being accustomed to floating or even what's left of a story wouldn't blend.

Still disappointing that neither of the Toads or even a Toadette have any sort of real names or personality.

@MoldyClay

I agree with pretty much all of this. I so would have purchased the game if the SMB2 roster was available.

If not unlockable at the end, then Daisy should have been the one kidnapped.

The whole physics thing is BS. She doesn't need her floating ability and her physique isn't much taller than Luigi. Lame argument if you ask me.

i agree, it's very lame. it would have been nice to play a game such as this with a ton of different characters, but then nintendo would actually have to do some work, and not just cut and paste for their wii versions of old games from the past. that's all it comes down to really.

personally, i think the only reason this game is even coming out is because people were b**** that nintendo wasn't making the games, and just tip toeing around. this game did seem to come out pretty fast actually. from the time that we first heard anything about it to the actual release date at the end of the year...seems odd to me.

Nintendo announces their games, when they are 6 months from being ready. Other start hyping their games before they even start making them, which makes them boring when they actually release after two-four years.

Nintendo has always announced their games very late. GameCube-era they were forced(?) to change their tactics, which didn't help them a lot. Now the old Ninty is back. And we can play our games fresh.
