Sessler still doesn't get it.

First off, let's not blame the recession. If Nintendo isn't going to blame it for their momentum loss with the Wii and DS, no other companies should. It should be a minor problem at the most.

Now, onto EA. While EA did experiment with new Intellectual Properties, they failed to make them more appealing. The problem wasn't because they were new games, they were games that the gaming audience, both core and expanded market, didn't really want. EA is just setting themselves up for even bigger trouble by following Activision's exploitation of established franchises. EA needs to be concern about the longterm, and milking your franchises will do nothing but hurt you.

Lastly, I'm disappointed in Sessler's comments about the 2007 'boom', as he called it. He refused to acknowledge Nintendo at all, which isn't surprising since his bias against the system is well documented in his Soap Box.

Y'know, I used to hate Sessler to death, but he grew on me. He's definitely not the greatest, but probably one of the more level-minded game journos out there. He also needs to just give up and start shaving that damn head.

I still think he stutters way too much for someone that works in television. >_>

On topic:
It's sad to see all these layoffs happen, but it's really a standard in the industry. I don't think the recession is a part of it at all. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a little "slower" this year, but definitely not the be-all end-all cause of it. People need to stop placing the blame *SOLELY* on it, which a lot of people seem to be doing this year.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard "...because of this recession we're in..." :/

Yes, Sessler doesn't get it. I'm sure glad we have somebody like you to explain why he's wrong and you are right. It's kind of funny how he's a big name in the industry and you aren't, though.

Holy s***. We are in a recession. When you're talking about anything financial; whether it be jobs or income or anything like that, the state of the economy is king of that argument.

I really enjoyed Sessler's talk, and he's absolutely right.

Think about this: games today cost around 40-60 dollars (Deluxe editions omitted ffs). Money is rough in these times (I'm in Canada and it's not much better here). In 2007, we weren't knee deep in it and we also get a bevy of interesting new IPs. We got Assassin's Creed, Modern Warfare, Bioshock, etc. Gamers bought these titles and loved them. And look at the top sequels in the coming year(s). Now in a time when money's not as exhuberant as we'd like it to be, to buy what we know and trust, and sadly it's hard for new IPs.

The lack of a Nintendo mention mainly has to do with the lack of new IPs from Nintendo. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, etc are ALL established and trusted brands. They need no mention. Look at Wii Music and how that bombed. Yeah, Wii Sports and whatever, but that was what... 2004/2005? Irrelevant to the argument.

Anyways, good video.

Yeah, I know you don't really learn about this until high school level education and beyond...

but the recession is kind of big deal, especially when your company makes recreational toys, which aren't necessities in many peoples' lives, and are usually the FIRST thing to go when money gets tight.

And who doesn't want EA's new franchises? Speak for yourself. I'd much rather have another real Dead Space game or Mirror's Edge 2 before I would most 3rd party wii games.

I think Brutal Legends would have done better on the Wii, to be honest.

Wasnt EA also behind the missed opportunity to have a Godfather sequel on the Wii?

To tell you the truth, if I were up to me, I would launch experimental, new IPs on the Wii, and then port them over to the HD consoles later. Since the Wii's cost entry point is lower, and it has a bigger install base. It always makes sense to port up, then to port down.

@Burgers

its also kinda cool that sessler, like you, is a total douche, and loves to troll nintendo fans

@ninjablaze

no, actually, games are pretty stable in a recession because they provide an outlet, its depressing losing jobs and money, so they have to fill the void. if the money loss becomes too much, however, yes, the games will take drops in sales

@MDX

you wont ever make it in this world, you just make to much sense

we dont take kindly to sense 'round here
