November 19, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

"Basically, you can expect something for everybody. One of the most eagerly anticipated titles here is 'Final Fantasy,' which is very, very big in Japan, and that is very much geared to the adult market. It will be the most sophisticated game yet. We estimate the serious player can get through it in 60 hours. Casual players may take twice as long.'' - Tom Sarris, Nintendo Spokesperson (1990)

This is quite a bit different from how Nintendo talks today, don't you think?! I don't believe they'd be trying to play up the adult nature of a title. At least we can see that Nintendo has been talking casual gamers for a long time now!

Except the context they used casual in is different than what people use it these days. Casual nowadays means stupid game/gamer.

I belive that there would be a lot more quality videogames if devs. would focus on that philosophy instead of breaking games down to bits that try to please everyone.

@Inneverate

"Casual" means someone who does not dedicate much time to the hobby of gaming. This is the reason why minigames are so popular with casual players, they offer short play sessions. No need to put hours of time into those games.

It meant that back then, it still means that now.

Yeah well, back in the day Final Fantasy was huge, now it's nothing obviously.

Apparently, pretending that you're bowling appeals more to adults now.

@Burgers:

@PaperLink64:

I'm willing to bet that you used a guide. Imagine trying to go through an old school RPG on your own.

I recall it taking a full month of playing the game every day after school and for at least 3 hours on weekends from the time I bought Dragon Warrior to when I finished it when I was around 8 years old. By that same contrast, I beat Super Mario Bros. for the first time within the first two weeks of getting it, even at that age (granted I had played it plenty of times on friends' NESes).

Remember that the internet didn't exist back then. Those of you who have played through old school games like this recently and used guides for at least ONE part or more, remember how lucky you are :)

Then again I -did- have an NP subscription... I just never had an issue that covered Dragon Warrior when I played it :P

60 hours?...hmm I guess. For me it was more like 40 hours (no guides/walkthroughs/cheats used), but then again I played the ps1 remake. (it's mostly the same but there are a few differences).

But FF1 is amazing (for its age)
