Playing by the Rules is an analysis of video games put together by a pair of Swiss organizations, Pro Juventute, a children’s rights group, and Track Impunity Always (TRIAL). The analysis' goal is to “raise public awareness among developers and publishers of the games, as well as among authorities, educators and the media about virtually committed crimes in computer and videogames.” A number of games were involved in the study, including titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. What's the final statement from the analysis?

It would be very useful if developers would incorporate more specific rules on how to conduct an operation in their games, in terms of the weapons allowed, the behaviour allowed, the military targets sought, the degree of collateral damage permitted, etc. The message of the scenes should never be that everything is allowed, or that it is up to the player to decide what is right and what is wrong. In real life, this is not the way it works.

He just doesn't get it.

Video games are a way for people to escape reality. If we wanted to abide by the rules of society, then we wouldn't even bother playing games in the first place.

I really don't think it'd be that bad if developers would put these rules into place for some of the missions in a war game, or maybe have these available as a challenge mode or something. Could be interesting to have to think carefully about what actions are legal while trying to destroy an enemy's base. Besides, there are already loads of games that have had "restricted" modes in order to change up gameplay/increase difficulty.

"In real life, this is not the way it works."

But video games, even the "simulation" titles, are not supposed to be reality at all. Should we set up a list of guidelines in movies just because its wrong to destroy a building while fighting a giant monster, or because trying to block bullets with a sword is dangerous? Seriously. :facepalm
