Aonuma isn't the director of Zelda Wii? Hmm, I wonder who is. Anybody know?

I honestly can't watch this.

The guy dubbing for him is impossible to understand. I would rather read subtitles than listen to something I have to decipher just as bad as if he was just speaking in Japanese.

I don't actually know what he's saying, at all.

Except "The timeline. It is secret"

@Totodile

Miyamoto isn't the director either. There's speculation it'll be Yoichi Yamada.

Really? That sucks. I can understand it. Do you not live near people who don't speak English as their first language?

Anyways, for a while I was really worried about this one, but my worries were for not. Seems like Nintendo first party is saving their systems' holiday again. Wonder how the third parties will complain about this one...

Wait Aonuma isn't the director? As dissapointed as I was with TP, he did a lot of right things like make the story darker and took the first step for voice acting with midna.

I really hope whoever the new director is (Im guessing miyamoto) they don't dumb down the story or anything

@Stryks

Miyamoto hasn't directed a game since Ocarina of Time. He's been a producer almost exclusively since then (Majora's Mask was the first Zelda that Aonuma directed). I wonder if it's Tezuka. He was the director of Link's Awakening, which Miyamoto speaks favorably of (though admitted one of the main reasons why is because Miyamoto didn't work on LA, it was mostly Tezuka's work). Hmm, hey maybe Koizumi's directing it. That would explain why he's only a producer on Galaxy 2 and not director like the first game.

If they're not saying who the director is right now then maybe it's supposed to be a surprise? It'd be very interesting if it turned out to be Sakurai.

@supadude5000

I do, but they stick to just speaking their language, rather than even bothering with English. Nothing against them, and nothing against the guy speaking in this video.

I just can't understand it. I could make things out, but it was just too hard for me to bother with, especially when I was half falling asleep, which potentially could've added to my not understanding.

@vertikal

That's entirely possibly why. Normally, I can understand these things. I guess it seemed a bit heavy of an accent to me, as I've heard people with accents and understood them fine before. *shrugs*

@Stryks

It's not Miyamoto either.

The one thing I think he did wrong with TP was the wolf mechanics. Just everything about the wolf had potential and it was wasted in the end, and the whole "light' bug thing was just annoying and boring and really messed up the flow of the game. It's one thing to "switch it up", but it just made the game feel like it hit a halt.

As did the "look for these oddly placed Owl statues, which, btw, why the hell do the marks on the map NOT disappear?

I also think, whether his fault or not, halfway through the game, they forgot half of the subplots to the game. Zelda, Ilia, the kids, and various other things. They were all kinda forgotten and left to take a back seat to Midna as the main star, and some elements (as well as character development for Zant, Zelda or Ganon) all suffered terribly from it.

That's just me.

@Eternal Rain

I hope Sakurai adds tripping.

Honestly, I think MM is one of Aonuma's best. I also like TMC and PH, but MM stood out.

TWW and TP were great games, but there are a lot of elements in those games that are simply lacking in comparison. And this isn't even from me loving MM so much. I honestly just feel like he started on a high note and didn't really progress from there with a whole game.

There are bits and pieces of each game that followed that I think, as a whole game with those elements combined, would be an amazing title.

Aonuma had the potential to make REALLY great Zelda games, but I feel like Miyamoto was hindering his creativity in some parts and that they rushed some games.

I agree completely, and that is why I'm happy to see him as producer. His directing skills aren't the same since MM, but he is still a terrific designers and has incredible ideas. Besides, with him as producer, I believe there will be less Miyamoto intervention (which is great, after the way he screwed up the beginning of TP). Having someone like Tezuka or Koizumi as director (I prefer Tezuka, personally) and Aonuma as producer on a 4 year project could provide us something truly amazing and revolutionary.

And people say casuals haven't harmed gaming, this franchise on platforms has been hit hard. Having watched all that, I wanted to punch a wall when I heard Aonuma wanting to BALANCE the game for novices/fans.

Why? Why can't there be OUR game? Just like Wii Sports Resort, WiiMusic, and Wii Fit Plus, where is OUR 100% core Zelda game? It isn't fair.

Gone are the days of pure exploration from GBC Zelda. Gone are the days of difficulty spike and challenging dungeons.

Remember when buying potions in Ages/Seasons/LA DX was hard work after grinding for cash and you would use it on CHALLENGING boss fights and enemy encounters?

I'll give you an example.

Ask a Zelda veteran memorable dungeons from the old GB Zeldas and they'll respond with a few such as: Eagle's Tower, Turtle Rock, Jabu Jabu (Oracle of Ages), and hell the last dungeon in Ages.

What else? Ages had a boat you could EXPLORE with. And it wasn't on-rail and set in stone, you could actually EXPLORE.

All I've noticed with this franchise since Nintendo wants to entertain the casual players is it becomes more and more streamlined experience.

It's a little bit sad and I'll buy it but Nintendo can't fix a broken heart with a game like Spirit Track.

I'm not making any final impressions but this is what I got from the interview, my take on what Aonuma said. I'm also glad he's growing out his beard 100%, maybe it'll encourage him to finally give us a BEARDED MANLY LINK? ;_;

One thing that I disagree with, and that worries me: the idea that Zelda is about Link, Zelda, and a badguy, and everything else can be random crap pulled out of a hat.

If you put it that way, it can be just about ANY game. I mean, Mega Man, Roll, Dr. Wily. Sonic, Tails, Robotnik. Mario, Peach, Bowser. See where I'm going here?

What Aonuma isn't recognizing in this interview is that there are certain staples of the game world outside of just the three main characters that make Zelda a 'Zelda' experience. That troubles me, because Zelda needs to retain and CAPITALIZE UPON it's own unique character - something it's been inconsistent with for years..

"maybe it'll encourage him to finally give us a BEARDED MANLY LINK? ;_;"

If you can justify that being in a Zelda game, sure. Otherwise, that's just obnoxious.

@vertikal

The guy speaking clearly wasn't Aussie. ;p I'm American and I understood him fine, and I understand Aussies fine (at least, every one I've listened to thus far in my life).

"And people say casuals haven't harmed gaming, this franchise on platforms has been hit hard. Having watched all that, I wanted to punch a wall when I heard Aonuma wanting to BALANCE the game for novices/fans."

1) "Casual" is a meaningless word. It's a misnomer. Quit blaming people who have only begun to enjoy gaming as much as the rest of us. They're not at fault for anything and you're sounding like a selfish elitist. We have no idea how the game will turn out.

2) Zelda was already becoming an easier game beginning with the SNES title. Zelda II is the hardest game in the series. No game has ever matched that difficulty level.

3) The days of "pure exploration" were fundamentally changed with Ocarina of Time. It's not like the 3D Zeldas have ever recreated the overworld from the 2D games. They're entirely different. The 3D overworlds serve as more of a travel hub than anything else. The ability to discover a hidden dungeon or cash pit by burning down a random tree or blowing up a random wall was completely dropped.

4) I don't want a bearded Link. I don't mind him being a little bit older, but Zelda is not Gears of War. It's always been about a youthful kid who succeeds because of raw courage and determination, not skull-crushing strength.

@DoubleDragon

No, because that's a half-ass response. Nintendo wants to cater to two radically different fanbases and the new guys get games custom tailored to them (WiiFit Plus and Resort). Let us have our 100% hardcore title without any gimmicks to ease casuals.

Now back to why I said it was a half-ass response, its more so that you're trying to qualify this title as a full 3D title and that's why it has those chances in the exploration department.

Wouldn't you say this was more 3D with an over-the-top view?

Plus its a handheld Zelda.

The only reason I mentioned that was because it irked me that its yet another franchise we have to concede to casuals...in a franchise that's been stagnating over the quality since The Minish Cap on the handheld system.

"No, because that's a half-ass response."

What is? I'm not even sure what you're referring to.

"Nintendo wants to cater to two radically different fanbases and the new guys get games custom tailored to them (WiiFit Plus and Resort)."

First of all, I like Wii Sports Resort. I picked it up day one. So it's not custom tailored to anyone, except, perhaps, people who like pure game play and no stories or other things that might be viewed as fluff (not that I view that stuff as fluff). Besides, it has a huge appeal with kids.

"Let us have our 100% hardcore title without any gimmicks to ease casuals."

This is a ridiculous statement. "Hardcore" doesn't exist. There is no such thing. Besides, what do you think the original Zelda title was? It was what everyone today tries to call "casual." It had virtually no in-game story. You had to read the manual for that. Controls were simplistic and almost arcade-like. Puzzles were minimal and everything was essentially based on finding your way through a maze and killing every enemy in sight. So, you're trying to justify something that was never there.

"Wouldn't you say this was more 3D with an over-the-top view?"

What? Spirit Tracks? I don't know. I thought we were impliedly talking about what's happening with Zelda Wii. Spirit Tracks, like Phantom Hourglass, is essentially a 2D game - most of the time.

"The only reason I mentioned that was because it irked me that its yet another franchise we have to concede to casuals..."

Gaming does not exist in an "us vs. them" mentality. It's crap like this that is ruining gaming. Besides, if you're talking about Spirit Tracks, wasn't it already noted by someone (maybe the developers?) that it's harder than Phantom Hourglass? And if it's Zelda Wii we're talking about, we have no clue how it will turn out. But some people want to see change in the series.

"in a franchise that's been stagnating over the quality since The Minish Cap on the handheld system."

Some people may agree with this, others may not. Personally I have no problem with the 3D Zelda games. I love them. But I wouldn't mind innovation.

It's just that your whole anti-"casual" tirade is absurd. Wii Sports Resort is nothing more than a return to arcade-style gameplay. I think a lot of people were quite happy with swordplay and would like to see that in the next Zelda title.

1) sounds like a cheap way to use new OLD ideas to make a game.

and

2) not even motionplus could have made TP a good game.
