November 23, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

The original Super Smash Bros. is coming out on the Virtual Console in North America. I'd say that's a pretty big deal for Nintendo fans, as the Smash Bros. series has moved on to become one of the most popular brands that the industry has. I know I'll be willing to get back into the original, even with the extremely unbalanced throws!

I tried to play it awhile ago. Felt much slower than I remembered.

Yea, I had the jap version on my Wii for a while. It's kinda fun, but it can't compare to Melee or Brawl. The sequels are just way better, and after playing the original again, I don't think I'll ever return to it again. Not that anyone cares, but I can only recommend this to those who have to have every Smash game in their collection.

This really should have come out around Brawl, I think. Or better yet, it should have been included in place of the demos.

Am I the only one that somehow prefers 64 over Melee and Brawl over both 64 and Melee at the same time?

Honestly I can't find myself actually caring to play past versions of games like Smash Bros. It's just soooo much better on Wii, I can't enjoy the old lesser versions.

Unless nostalgia is clouding my judgment (and it most likely is), I think I prefer the SSB64 over Brawl...

@Lofty The Metroid

Damn right it's nostalgia. Unless you can give us a reason why you prefer 64 over Brawl. Can you?

Smash 64 has really good multiplayer, nostalgia or no. I would DEFINITELY pick it up if you have several people to play with. If you don't... you might want to pass, as the single player is incredibly lackluster in comparison to later titles. *coughMeleecough*

well at least polygons were wayyy better than the useless "wire frames", and the alloys were respectable at least

Been going back and playing Brawl a lot this past week. Never played the original though, so I'm kinda looking forward to it.

It's my favorite Smash. Everything about the game still plays great to me and I can't wait to purchase it. It has the best LIVELY crowd of the series to and the best "Smash" hit effects. Seriously, the crowd's reactions and the way the smashing of the hits sound STILL crack me up to this day. Cannot wait.

I prefer this the most, then melee, then brawl.

This game was small but controlled very tight. I didn't feel like I was too slippery of floaty like the later iterations.

The level were very enjoyable as well (gotta tip my cap to saffron city or w/e that pokemon stage was)

Mario was not nerfed (lookin at you brawl)

No clones

It was just more simple fun for me.

It runs at like 15 frames per second with 4 people playing.

@trsspidey

With only like 10 characters to play as it's no wonder none are alike.

So what? That never stopped me from playing it for hours with friends. I am positive that I will spend hours with it once it hits on the VC.

I was so obsessed with the game that I spent my early Internet days feverishly scouring the web looking for any news of a possible sequel.

You might not believe this, but there was actually a time when you could go online and talk about Smash Bros., the wonderful game where iconic video-game characters battled it out. People gathered on forums far and near to discuss how much fun they were having! But then, well, you know.

One thing I loved about the N64 version was the crowd and you reminded me of that. The gaps and cheers were actually loud and made you feel like there really was an audience watching. I don't know why they toned down the crowd so much in the sequels.

Also, SSB has an amazing soundtrack. The Brinstar theme is basically the best Metroid Smash song ever. Songs like Final Destination and vs Polygon Team are playful and fun. Oh, and let's not forget the creepy main menu music... O_o

I loved the game when it first came out, but the later ones are simply better. I know there's a lot of nostalgia for it but, my N64 still works fine (At least I think it does). There really isn't much justification for purchasing this one.

@terryxlr

Why does a differing opinion have to be the result of nostalgia? I can give you my reasons for preferring the original over the sequels (and I do love the sequels).

Instant meteor attacks with no wind-up, strong throws, Link's bombs have better lateral movement and their explosions are more effective in reach and stun, a killer Falcon Punch, louder and punchier sound effects, a more reactive audience (as previously mentioned), stronger items, stickier screw attack, the exclusive stages (specifically Hyrule, modern and old Mushroom Kingdom, Pokemon), the voices. Your opinions may vary.

I played the original with my friends a week ago for a few hours and had more fun than we do with Brawl or Melee. This isn't meant to diminish the sequels at all, as they are great. I simply to this day have more fun with the original.

Just remember folks, the next time you feel like taking an untoward shot at Satoru Iwata, just because he's the Nintendo "Authority Figure" now, that he did in fact help to create Kirby, the Mother series, and Smash Bros.

I.E. he's awesome.

I personally never played the original [except once in a games store], the first SSB game I bought was Melee... so this doesn't really interest me.

I don't really know if I'll get this, having brawl kinda does that. I'll especially won't get it if Nintendo overcharges.

The bad thing that will probably come of this is people recording themselves doing tricks synced to horrible music. Sigh.

I see you have you're reasons and I'm totally cool with that. I just couldn't imagine why anyone would prefer the original, but if you claim to have more fun with it, then I guess what I said isn't an absolute. I'm just going based on my latest experience with the game.

Id like to see this convo again after SSB is actually out.

I am getting it for sure, even if its just cuz Id like the look of the classic SSB logo sitting in my Wii menu.

Also I kinda miss the old stages... fighting on the roof of Hyrule Castle amnd on Saffron City buildings... they should bring those back!

I wasn't going to get this as its successors improved on it inmensly and it's dated.. but now that my Wii stopped reading Brawl this will have to do.

- I've always liked SSB64 the most, I always play it online with people :3

- My brother and his girl also refuse to play Brawl or Melee because of how chaotic they find it, but they love playing SSB64 :3

I still have my N64 and Super Smash Bros. I play it every day. Unfortunately, the analog stick on my controller is worn out from so much use.

Okay, I just played the original Smash Bros. again. I had fun, but the sequels are just way better in my opinion. More moves, bigger stages, better graphics, better music, more characters. 64 still is a very good game.

Being a relatively high-level Brawl player, and understanding the mechanics behind high-level Melee play, I only find SSB64 to be a fun party game for messing around with. If you've got any skill, the game's combos can be ludicrous, and yes, extremely overpowered throws all around.

Although, if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't actually find it any fun to play :P However I'd never say I 'prefer it' over Melee or Brawl. Stuff like crowd reactions and sound effects are absolutely minimal in my opinions of the three games, as there are plenty, far more important aspects to the games.
