This is in no way confirmed. Take this story as nothing more than speculation for now.
The rumor of Sonic in the new Smash Bros. has been going on for a long time now. This time it's a little different. Reader Alex sent me an email telling me that Swedish Nintendo magazine +N is reporting Sonic in SSBB as a fact. He even grabbed a scan of the article in question.
Basically the article states who we will be seeing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and they include Sonic in that list. Speculation by the magazine, or do they know something that we don't?

[...] GoNintendo got some information about the upcoming smash hit for the Wii Super Smash Bros Brawl. They cite a Swedish magazine which lists Sonic as one of the playable characters in Super Smash Bros Brawl. This is not a official confirmation and it could very well be an error of the author of the article but it seems likely that it will be officially announced very soon. [...]
[...] GoNintendo is reporting that a Swedish magazine called +N has an article describing the playable characters in the upcoming Wii title Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Interesting thing is that Sonic the Hedgehog appears in that list. While this is not a confirmation of Sonic’s inclusion in the game, it wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility. Gamers have wanted to see Mario and Sonic in the same game since the 16-bit era when Nintendo and Sega were rivals. Now, since Sega became a software publisher exclusively, Sega and Nintendo have a much better relationship, even sharing similar visions in game-making. Since Sonic already appears on Nintendo platforms, why not? We’ll keep you posted if any confirmation of this rumor surfaces. In the meantime, what other characters would you like to see appear in a Smash Bros. game? Source: GoNintendo Share and Enjoy: [...]

I for one hope it’s true. This surely wouldn’t be the first time these two faced off, but it would be in the virtual world. I’m a fan of both, but my roots run deep with Sonic, so I’d like to see him get his chance to pummel Mario again, like he did during their 16-bit wars.
