March 12, 2010 by The News Team Filed Under: DS, Cube, Rumors, Nintendo in general

The following is based on insider reports coming from GDC, with devs supposedly confirming work on the DS2...

- two screens that are larger than what the DS offers, but the gap between the two is so small that both screens can be better utilized for making one big picture
- development kits comparable to GameCube
- devs say there isn't much of a learning curve
- accelerometer included
- devs looking to finish up their DS2 game development by the end of the year
- some devs think we could get an E3 2010 announcement, along with a release before 2010 closes out

I would bet it would be compatible with DS1 software, so you would be allowed to play all the old games on it.

It is pretty obvious they had to make it compatible with DS games, making it's initial library huge (they've done this in previous handhelds).

Now, I have to wonder how soon they will release it, considering the DS is still selling like there's no tomorrow.

...Why? The Dsi is still like not even a year old.

The DSi is a sideline project - it's only purpose was to give Nintendo an extra year or so to finalise the DS2 [in my opinion]. Why else the lack of games and support for it till fairly recently?

But yeah, unveiling at E3 2010 and release next year has been obvious for a long while now methinks. Can't wait! :-D

Why I'm excited about better graphics I feel kind of gipped. Unlike my Wii which at got near launch I only began with the DS last year when the DSi came out. I also feel bad because I convinced a freind of mine to upgrade to DSi becaue of flip book and the other features. I would like at least more than two years with the thing before it becomes obsolete. No one has even used the added hardware boost yet, the processor is clocked twice as fast as the regular DS and it has four times the memory. That's a bigger jump than Gamecube to Wii.

Luckily if a DS2 comes out, you and your friend are allowed to continue using your DS.

and I promise, even if they stop DS1 game development right then and there, it'll still be a long time before you run out of great games to play that have already been released.

Well if Nintendo actually shows some initiative and puts out some first party retail games that make use of the new hardware in the DSi and not just 'lol cameras', I'd say hold off on DS2, but until they do I welcome the successor.

This is coming from somebody who absolutely loves his DSi and DSi Ware.

Ha! Indeed.

If any of this is true, than good I guess. Let's just hope they just have an online shop that's not laughable when compared to the App Store.

While it might seem wwaaayyy too soon for the DS2 to come out considering how remarkable the DS turns out to be every month, let's not forget that there was just a 3.5-year gap between the GBA and the DS.

I understand that a lot of you are enjoying the DS or DSi. I am too. But why would you want Nintendo to wait? Look at the GB Color. They kept that thing going waaaay too long because it was selling well. The technology was so outdated at that point.

Why try to stop progress? You still have your DS, you still have hundreds of great games to go back and play, and if they make it backwards compatible you can sell/trade your old handheld. I hope these rumors are true and it comes as soon as they can make it at a reasonable price.

Gosh, too much DS hardware crammed these days. DSi just released last year and it hasn't been a year old yet. There's so many things they can do with the DSiWare and its camera (like recently, in Japan, a tilt-camera based DSiWare game was released). Now we're seeing the release of DSi XL this month. They should focus on DSi for another year! Please! DS 2 for 2011!

@Cornwad-

Dunno about Wii, but i can see some moron criticizing DS2 for being a Gamecube with two TV's duct taped together. :P

@Dr_Peace-

As decidedly last gen Wii may be, it has far surpassed the Gamecube already when developers take advantage of it. Neither Mario Galaxy or the sequel could have been made without compromise on Gamecube. Heck, it looks better than a lot of PS360 games...

As for anyone thinking this means the end for the DS, think first. GBA went strong for a good 3 years after DS was unveiled. Still pumped out great games till the bitter end. Just because a new system comes out, doesn't mean the old one is dead immediately. As for DSi, i'd label that as a glorified redesign. I don't think it was ever intended as a ds successor.

For all of you who says that it doesn't make any sense releasing a new handheld when the DS and DSi still sells ALOT..

When they release a new handheld that probably means they gonna release alot of new software too.. like another mario game (sunshine ds anyone?) or stuffs that couldn't be done on the current DS.
But yeh, they shouldn't really release a new handheld when the old one is still selling.. but hey, it's Nintendo, they never made any sense.

The only problem, is gonna be almost as powerful than the Wii, that is gonna be weird, unless there is a Wii 2 soon, about the sales, the DS was out when the GBA was selling A LOT, that much, that they called the DS a third pillar (because if it was a failure, they would continue with the Game Boy line)

Me too!!! I've been holding on getting a DS because I've been waiting for the successor. I'm sure the DS is gonna be like the PS2, it'll keep selling while the DS 2 is being sold.

People keep complaining about new iterations of DS's, but that's how technology is. I got a Macbook, then a few months later, the new one was released. It sucked, but hey, I knew it was gonna happen.

Oh, here we go with them rumors...although these seem more 'believable' than mere rumors...

Personally, I think the DS (specially the DSi, with DSiWare and the extra power) has potential left for at least one more year, even two. I would be all over 'DS2' as soon as it releases and I would inmediately become the #1 DS2 Fan (heh, I like the ring of that), but I think it would be wiser to wait until at least late 2011, so the DSi can leave a nice, although perhaps little, footprint on the DS family.

small correction nintendo made the 3axis accelerometer popular by putting two in the wiimote and nunchuk while sony was putting a 2d one and a one axis other thingy just for rotation. The sixaxis is a joke it's just not nearly as precise as the wiimote. Duck game two position why did no one notice that. ANd yello! kirby , warioware and prototype banjo pilot ? all from nintendo DECADES before apple was even a true hipster company.

Those are all nice addition can't really care for the small gap it was never a problem. Really hoping for an analog stick if they intended to put any kind of gamecube game , just one the other could be handled better by the touchscreen.

In retrospect , i should have exchange my dsl for a dsi but at the time the dsi only had the brand new "os" , no flipnote, march of the minis 3, metal torrent, that head tracking game, fighter session, shooting game you are the enemies, that x sequel , some platformer i forgot the names, braintraining small edition , wario diy even though it's not dsi only. And i'm still not sure how wide the "record one tiny sound " app could be pushed.

Now i just know the minute i buy one , the ds2 will be announced. And going by their business model , they have now, absolutely no competition in the HARDCORE MARKET. the psp failed spectacularly as a platform and as a concept... and still have all the big ip. Just to show how stupid those people are. Maybe a ds2 with good enough graphics and EASY PORT possibilities could grab some of those. They could have ported those ip to wii but hey stupidity first.

Meh i'm sure sony will make another of those conference where they'll pad themselves on the back for inventing the true touchscreen with i predict some degree a pressure sensitivity even it's quite useless in the gaming world. Oh and create your animation tool, the iphone would have done it , if it wasn't for the horrible finger control , they are even pushing with oversized even more overpriced ipad. All of this will allow them to syphoned some of nintendo consumers maybe but definitely all the 3rd parties who now clearly rather die that work for nintendo.

Not happy about an accelerometer really.

Bigger screens? Not really necessary, but I like that they are closer. Hopefully they are just DSi XL sized.

I know the DS will be 6 years old this Fall, but I really hate that Nintendo does this crap where you have the original, finally buy an upgrade, and then they release an actual new console.

It's obnoxious.

The DS is doing fine though, so I don't see why they don't actually use the DSi. They were all like "OH MAN, DSi ONLY TITLES." and then nothing happened. Nintendo always makes this crazy peripherals and then don't use them (and Vitality Sensor is going to join this trend, for sure; Potential or no potential).

Needs more Wii love and care. DS can stand to progress another year. No new DS this year. We're getting XL. Chill out, Nintendo.

Fantastic. Now c'mon devs, tell them the other stuff about the DSAdvanced. Like both screens as touchscreens, and the multitouch surface. Also, how GBA games aren't compatible but DS and DSi games are.

And of course the few upgraded bits that make it look oh so pretty, sound oh so pretty, and well- you get the picture.

To the people who claim Nintendo isn't supporting DSi:

Ever heard of DSiWare? You know, that little downloadable service for the DSi... Plenty of Nintendo-developed games on there.

Yes, Nintendo needs to put out some DSi-only retail games, but they are doing pretty well with the DSi's digital service.

@Araknid what do you mean inb4me?

I mean I dunno what do now...well I DO. Continue to wait it out.

DSlite your are OK FOR NOW. But now Nintendo seems to be making things tough for me...first I never got a regular DSi...and I did plan on getting one....but good that I wasn't an early adopter(maybe if i had the dosh I would of already got one) Good then as I thought when they revealed the XL I was in prime position as I didn't get the regular DSi but now I would be getting the XL....and then Nintendo release it in weird colours...

So I am just sitting here waiting for a black OR blue XL....and now its lets say 50% confirmned a new DS2 is one the way.....UGH! UGH!

*FACE PALM*

Well its ok actually I can just continue to wait it out...DS2 need only supports all previous DS and DSiWare and with BIGGER screens than the XL is that what they meant? and Gamecube power on the go?

er Count me in....price will be the only thing to worry about...but I bet Nintendo can give away shrunk gamecube tech in a portable on the go for "nothing" in 2010. heh
or beyond...

@Granville

You may well be correct, Mario Galaxy is beautiful and may not be able to run at 60 frames a second on the Gamecube, I have no doubt that it WOULD run though.

I chose to use the word 'hardly' because there are only a handful of games that do approach what the Gamecube achieved. Mario Galaxy itself doesn't have the technology to match Starfox Adventures and Rogue Squadron either.

I'm hoping Zelda Wii finally destroys everything though.

I would like to see a DS 2 with the same capabilities the Cube has had, like the graphics and the possibility to put many objects on-screen without slowdown (Paper Mario 2 anyone?).
What would be awesome is if the DS2 would get ports of Cube games like Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion, since I'd love to play those on the go. I mean, the original DS got Mario 64 ported to it, so Mario Sunshine is the next logical step for a DS2.
Oh, and it needs an analog stick (or two).

It may be false, but the next portable being about as powerful as the GC seems about right, considering the fact that the DS is basically on par with the N64. And the fact that PSP is actually only slightly more powerful than the PS1.

So I essentially would have expected the DS2 to have graphics on par with GC.
