November 8, 2008 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: DS, GBA, Nintendo in general

I wish I could remember what magazine it was, but back in the day, some reviewer trashed this game. They didn't like it at all, and I got really worried about the quality of the project. When Yoshi's Island finally hit store shelves, I picked it up, played the hell out of it...and had no idea how the reviewer could have hated it so much! Today, Yoshi's Island is considered one of the best SNES games ever. Man...I wish I could remember who did that review!

Yoshi's Island was tons better than Yoshi's Story. Heck, it's Super Mario World 2, for goodness' sake! Just one more SNES title that Nintendo seems to be avoiding a VC release of.

Yoshi's Island DS doesn't compare to the greatness of the original.

This was my second GBA game (right after SMW which I already played on the SNES) The game was great and I wish they brought the watermelons in Yoshi Island DS. :(

How do they consider that game a spin off when it's Yoshi's main game?

Heck, I'd consider SMW1 a spin off to SMW2 considering Yoshi's smaller role in it, but that's just me.

@Artistic_Anarchy:

I agree. I felt disappointed playing Yoshi's Island DS. I felt that the other babys weren't really neccessary. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island will forever be the best Yoshi game for me.

I personally thought Yoshi's Island DS was a very acceptable addition the series. Probably not as good as the original, though nevertheless was still fun - much better than the steady stream of crap that was being given to us.

Yoshi's Island DS wasn't a bad game by any means, but it was nowhere near as good as the original.

Yoshi's Island to me was annoying (baby crying), but somewhat addicting (the puzzles). I ended up buying the GBA remake of the game, and then also bought Yoshi's Island DS which I need to finish both!!!

Yoshi is love xD

It's sad how we Nintendo fans should be living of nostalgia from older games, because Nintendo doesn't want to release anymore games for us. Wii Sports Resort (arguably a quick cash in to sell a peripheral, probably the game will cost 80-90 dollars, like the common rip - off from them) is all they got for first half 2009, 25 1st/2nd party teams doing nothing.

Nintendo, and more specially NoA screwed this gen big time. I guess at the beginning of next year, most of the core audience would have left the crappy casual, consumer-screwer and money-hungry Nintendo behind,and let them cash in on the casual, misinformed consumer. It's ironic how they decided to destroy long years of work by turning into a shovelware/casual company.

Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite games.... Definitely one of the greatest platformers ever made. (2D or 3D) The game is absolutely beautiful, charming and smart. It's also a very, very big game packed with quality to the brim. Every level, boss and world is completely different than the one before.

Easily one of my top 5 favorite games on the SNES.

A complete classic.

Anyone who even tries to compare Apples to Oranges (SMW1 to SMW2) is kidding themselves...

Yoshi's Island is my 2nd fave SNES game right under Earthbound I remember playing that game all the time as a kid and remember finally making it to Bowser (which i think that fight is the most epic in gaming history) and it took forever to beat him.

I bet you anything the person who did the review was a Gamepro or Edge Magazine guy.But i remember playing this game and getting all 6 Stars that said you did and got everything in that part of Yoshi's Island.Then there are some of you who have yet to have that feeling too.

Yoshi's Island is an amazing game. Yoshi's Island DS is pretty good too, but it didn't feel that different. I guess the developers played it safe when making it.

@ternor:

LOL funniest ignorant comment of the day :D Nintendo started off very very casual. look at all those sport titles on the NES. But they had a few core gems like Mario, Metroid and Zelda... and wait... omg... do you know what? They actually have those titles on the Wii :O including Fire Emblem, Brawl, Battalion Wars etc etc... AND their first parties aren't doing "nothing" they're just not revealing what they are creating until it's ready to be shown. Expect to hear nothing until a month before the game's release :P seems to be Nintendo's habit these days.

They should never have lied and called it "Super Mario World 2" because that implies a lot. It's like Final Fantasy:CC for Gamecube, it was a lie, and the game seemed "less than" it should have been.

So I can understand why someone might trash it, adding promise of something from the past, that clearly isn't there, totally throws the game down somewhat. Not that Yoshi's Island was a bad game, because it wasn't, but coming off the heals of Super Mario World, and having that in the actual title, implies something grander than what is actually there.

Yoshi's Island is one of the best platformers out there. Period.

I think it's one of Nintendo's crowning achievements in game design, myself.

That's my own opinion, anyway. :P
