November 9, 2008 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

We'll post this up, just for the sake of being thorough. We've already showed you the short version of this statement, and linked you to the full audio interview. Below is Miyamoto's full answer to a question about HD, and whether Nintendo is heading in that direction.

“…I’m afraid we cannot confirm what we are doing today. But the fact of the matter is that technology is evolving all the time and in Japan, for example…All the analog broadcast will be stopped and shifted into the digital broadcasting. So many things are taking place and we are working in terms of the changes of the technologies all the time.”

A standard Nintendo comment, and something that should really go without saying really.

@GoApesh1t:

Alot of people aren't, I'm HD ready, have been for 2 years, now it just seems like a buzz word, I think nintendo has it right overall, the big jump, forced jump mind you will be in Digital over analog, not really HD. I'm sure they'll make the jump next consoles, and there's no real reason to simply go 720p over 1080i, but I think Nintendo will focus on not losing market simply because the console is in HD, ie, all the problems SD users have with HD systems.

If they want to continue domination and saturation of the markets, they'll do the right thing. I have confidence that Iwata and Miyamoto and all the rest understand that the digital age is upon us and it is becoming ever cheaper for the average consumer to purchase one or more high-definition television sets. Due process guides me to believe that Nintendo is now in a position of financial ability and will follow suit (much like they did with the transition from memory-based cartridges to optical discs) and offer high definition graphics with more processing power and other competitive hardware specs. They just want to make games accessible and affordable for everyone. Selling a $500-600 console in this generation was not feasible for them, and the Wii's success proves that.

Translation:

We had an HD Wii ready since early 2008, but were waiting for everyone to buy the regular Wii and once the sales finally slow down, we'll release it so that we can start this cycle all over again.

Seriously, you didn't see this coming? Come on, we've been doing this with the GameBoy, GBA and NDS, it was bound to happen with out consoles.

the wii will never have an hd conterpart just because of the fact that its going on its 3rd year and has yet to stabilize its sales, lower its price, or even offer a different color scheme. when this is all done nintendo would already be a month away from shipping wii2

Lol. Graphic whores will be born when the new HD Nintendo console is released and we'll be seeing even more hypocrites. =\ Hell, we'll even see the people who normally don't mind the whole storage solution with the whole SD cards say, "OMG HARD DRIVES ARE SO COOL" and forget all of their claims that working with SD cards wasn't a pain in the ass. ;)

@SuperPhillip:

I think that was a bad joke with bad stereotypes, wasn't it?

@Artistic_Anarchy:

I have yet to have a problem with the storage or SD cards but then again, I just delete games to download new ones (and yeah, I have MANY WiiWare games), I don't see it as a big deal, I would obviously like to have more capacity, but I don't see it as something primordial, but well, to each it's own.

Oh, I hope so. I mean, Nintendo has already proven that they know hard drives exist when they made those game stations for children's hospitals and such. I've only just begun accepting my SD card slot as something useful now that Activision has made it less of a pain to use (in GHWT). If Nintendo did the same and allowed for direct loading, there would be a lot less complaints. To load a 180 block song from my SD takes 10 seconds but copying a 300 block game from SD to internal memory takes upwards of 3 minutes. 300 blocks to the SD takes over 7 minutes. All with a 60x 2gb card.

@pikma:

Yes :P but I think SuperPhillip understands that.

But by the time they do then you'll be on the next big thing after HD, no one will give it a second glance.

So what would the point of a HD Nintendo be again?

It's odd, Nintendo is both behind the times and ahead of the times, both at the same time. Yeah i know that's confusing.

on one hand, the brought the world affordable touch screen, which is now becoming standard on everything, yet on the other hand, they have crappy small screens that suck to the tune of 1992.

Wifi is becoming standard on everything, yet they refuse to offer DVD as a standard, which is in EVERYTHING. Sure, some would suggest we don't need it, but my point is there.

Portable batter life is some of the best around on Nintendo systems, yet we have a wii with 512 memory like it's 1995 all over again.

No harddrive, and a lust for out of date SD cards, no real online multiplayer/in game dlc in way of new maps, items or weapons, yet pretty good motion control.

It's very odd really, how they can be so far a head in some areas and really far behind in others.

We'll also see the current "graphics whores," both developer and consumer alike, talk about how the new system is only "PS3 level" and that's why this new Nintendo console deserve only "mini-games" and poorly ported PS3/360 games (and not even the good ones).

Nintendo always slow... They move to cd when everyone goes dvd.. they move to dvd when everyone goes to blueray and hd dvd, and they'll move to hd when everyone moves to super duper hyper hd.

My guess is there will be a new "HD" version of the Wii in the not-so-distant future that has the ability to UPSCALE games and other applications. It's even possible that the extra applications (other than the games) such as the main interface, photo channel, internet channel etc. will be upgraded to work in actual HD resolutions, but I very much doubt the Wii games themselves will be in real HD anytime soon..

I dont think you've guys realize that nintendo's handheld stategy is very different from their console strategy, i think the only thing they would do is the different color schemes. And i dont think its a graphic whore thing but im pretty sure every developer would like their games to look good, you know, no blurry or muddy textures and what so on. I mean at least i know that when i render my own scenes i love my textures to be hi res. The polycount average.

They will probably do the bare minimum as far as HD goes. Probably 720p ONLY.. heck they would probably try to go 600p if that was possible just to save a few pennies on the hardware

The only reason they will do HD is when they HAVE to do it.

sounds like questworld and artistic anarchy should go to bed together. Sorry guys we have had two superior systems when it comes to graphics against sony. the gamecube and 64. and we were never graphics whores. Now that 360 and ps3 outweigh wii in graphics all the ps3 and 360 fanboys are graphics whores. Who's the hyprocrites?

@bearded OTP

And do you know whats best about these:

" yet they refuse to offer DVD as a standard"
"a lust for out of date SD cards"

both SDHC-card compatibility and Dvd-playback have been already done by homebrew on Wii. :p
