Now here's something that would make for a fantastic surprise announcement at E3. Could we really be seeing the new Professor Layton that soon?! Thanks to Supa_S for the heads up!

Gamers are always complaining that games 'aren't coming out at all' as a result of Nintendo's new policy to announce closer to launch, but as soon as the company announces 'In two months, these awesome games will be out!' People think: 'Nice surprise! Is this game really coming out that fast?" And get excited. I think its a good strategy.

Yeah, but the bad part with this new method of announcing games so close to launch is that there is no time to hype the games up as they have in the past and the sales have suffered for it.

Look at the dismal sales for Excite Bots. That game was a victim of no publicity.

that was more a lack of marketing altogether than simply the close proximity of announcement to release.

Anyway, nice! This will probably come out during their presser

A huge part of marketing of video games is the pre-release "hype" period. Same with movies. It's also the BEST kind of marketing because it's virtually FREE (unlike traditional advertising).

Get the potential audience excited for the release by putting out teaser info in the months-long lead-up to the release. Publicize the game with the major game media sites and they will hype the game themselves. Put footage of the game out there and gamers will market the game by word of mouth.

If they forgo that free publicity, then they really can't be surprised when the game posts terrible sales numbers.

You ignore the idea that they might simply have the budget to make these games exist, not market them, to justify their existence and do it as a favor to the rabid Nintendo fans who want games so that nobody can accuse them of releasing no games for long periods of time. They can also be promoted whenever as opposed to only when they come out. Look at the treatment Wario Land got, videos are going up every now and then still on the Nintendo Channel. That game straight rules.

Also: Professor Layton! Some people requested him in Brawl, how about the next Smash? WOOOOOOO!

That's why they should take advantage of pre-release marketing with the big media sites and the word-of-mouth marketing that comes with that. That costs virtually NOTHING and it is seen by millions of gamers. Pre-release publicity costs far less than running television or print advertisements after the release.

Seriously, how much do you think it costs to release a few screens and videos every couple weeks to sites such as IGN, 1Up, GameSpot, GoNintendo, etc.? Virtually nothing. Just look at the sales of Excite Bots as the most recent example. No publicity = crap sales.

Have you seen Nintendo's financial reports? They DEFINITELY have the money to market the titles they make. They are rolling in money right now. The lack of promotion, hype, and ad push for Excite Bots is practically inexcusable.

As for this title being announced at E3. Consider it nearly confirmed.
