May 28, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

Wow...take a look at this bit of hatred for Nintendo's Satoru Iwata...

We thought Reggie Fils-Aime was the source of Nintendo's evil. But like a final boss fight in a game, after you defeat Reggie, another, even more powerful boss appears. And that boss is Satoru Iwata. No one currently embodies Nintendo's preening, self-satisfied attitude quite like Gasbag-san. Have you noticed his ability to make workplace abuse sound cute during his speeches? Example from his GDC keynote: "My team said, 'We can do this in two years'; I told them that they had two weeks." (Peals of laughter usually ring out.) OK, we get it, Iwata, Nintendo is successful. But rubbing everyone's nose in it, repeatedly, with your charts and graphs at every opportunity, only makes us all anticipate the day when the tables turn on the Big N. once again. And that day will come. It's inevitable.

I don't get it...I really don't. I enjoy seeing sales statistics, but I agree that it's pretty boring to see them presented on stage. Still, this is Nintendo's press event. They can do whatever they want. The thing is, I don't see them coming across as arrogant when they show off these charts. Does anyone feel that Nintendo makes a point of rubbing their success in the faces of Sony and Microsoft when they show this data?

You know what's funny, is that I don't remember people complaining when the heads of the Playstation and Xbox grands were gloating at how awesome THEY were last generation. In fact, that s*** got downright annoying. I don't think Iwata or Reggie have EVER gotten that over the top. Hell, Sony, firmly in 3rd place, was STILL insisting not too long ago that they were still going to "win" this generation.

I think it's Nintendo making a point to the "hardcore" and others that the Petz gamez do sell MILLIONZZZ...just to prove they have expanded the market and a game like Wii Fit has sold nearly 20 million units, approaching the PS3 install base...
so while I don't really care, I wish they would use the time to talk about new games, not ones already out. They can send an email or release a flier with their game sales for all I care...I'm like you RMC, I love sales data, just not at E3 which is supposed to be the biggest news event for games of the year.

Would they care if the Sony and Microsoft execs were to tout their sales? I doubt it. This isn't just Satoru Iwata hate. It's Nintendo hate. That last sentence says it all.

Of course they are not being arrogant. There is no better way to show to an industry that is ignoring the best selling console ever that it IS worth it to invest on said console than putting down the industry's throat that this is selling fckloads of units and selling gazzilions of software.

Pretty angry sounding article.

The point of E3 (or at least one of its many purposes), is for the industry to present this information directly to retailers, reporters, and other people in the industry. It's Nintendo's "Press Conference," remember? So yeah, if you're dominating the marketplace, I think it's entirely legitimate to show that sales data at this sort of event.

Someone is showing their true colors it seems. Seems very upset.

It looks like a "let's hate on people most gamers like" article for hits.

The excerpt of that article reads like a 14 year old's critique of homework or something.

Iwata's a friggin businessman who is the head of one of most successful companies currently in existence. And he absolutely needs to talk about these figures and this data to convey his messages to third parties and to the press to strengthen or otherwise reinforce Nintendo's image and position.

Ah well. He's missing a lot. Listening closely to Iwata reveals many really interesting details about Nintendo's strategy. No wonder why the industry doesn't understand it; they find the nuts and bolts boring, and they're focused on product launches. And sure, that's really important. But not taking Iwata's words with equal importance deprives the "journalists" of many important details.

this is absolute stupidity.

the other companies twist statistics to "brag" about whatever straws they can grasp at - it just so happens that Nintendo's stats are the "most important" ones this gen.

Personally, good for Nintendo, but I do wish they would stop talking about their sales all the time. The Wii sells great. So does the DS. And Wii Fit. And Wii Play. And Mario Kart. Okay, we get it already. It's becoming overkill.

Hearing how Nintendo is #1 is like like someone trying to pass off "the sky is blue", "water is wet" or "grass is green" as something you may never have heard before. If you don't know how well they've been doing by now, how has the coma been?

Anyway, it seems to be an inescapable subject in ANY conversation they have these days, but they're not the first company to ever do so.

Quite frankly, I don't like any company boasting about how well they are doing. Nintendo has been doing this for some time now, claiming their milestones and what not.

I would much rather just have them cut the crap and show what people actually care about. Sales statistics and business plans should be something that is discussed in the office.

Not only Iwata, but kojima, will wright, and etc... top people that know what they talking about. I'm sorry E3 is for retail, and the media only.....not gamers. But for the GAMERS, E3 is OUR EVENT, but remember why the public is not allow.

So who this cripsygamer? And why they bashing developers/publishers talking about sells, and their charts. Do they know top retailers are there. They're not going to put crappy selling products on their shelves.

Regadless of how people (like the guy who wrote that article)feel about them, they're still allowed to say what they want to say (as long as they're 'honest') and we can't stop them.

They're the 'people' of the video game industry.

1) E3 is not about Games. It is about business. That is why consumers are not invited. It is about publishers and retail. They aren't showing off games for the good of gamers. They are showing them off to get retailers to stock them. They invite the press because their games get free exposure and advertising. Trying to convince yourself that E3 is about anything more than money and business is being blind. We just reap the benefits of the show because we get a bunch of awesome news.

2) All companies talk about their sales and data as well as their future business plans in order to get people behind them and making games for their systems as well as getting retailers to stock a good supply of their products.

3) Nintendo is not even half the demon Sony was when they were on top (or MS during the 360's headstart). Sony STILL (in 3rd place) touts their sales data and vision and their wonder-blue-ray-marathon-machine. And MS also talks about their triumphs and visions. It isn't just Nintendo. Nintendo just happens to have the best news to share. And apparently some people can't stand that a company is successful.

3) This article was a big joke and it shows that Crispy Gamer has no credibility. Their whole list was unfunny and ridiculous.

/rant

I'd also like to add, that while I do agree with some entries on the list and that every once and a while I wish Nintendo would shut up and show some damn games, I think the list as a whole was very unprofessional.

Nintendo needs to grasp that, for us, this is our super bowl, our world series, so they can't jerk us all off like they did last year.

as for the charts, i hate when they give numbers, because they show numbers that prove A, and i can show you numbers that prove B, so who really cares.

like M$ might say that they sold 30 million 360's but about 25 million are based on broken 360's so what are the point of the numbers. numbers are just for blow hards who want to try and show off.

as for Iwata, he is very anal, and borderline annoying. he's more of a blow hard than reggie and that's really saying something.

Then be paitent, then. Sure it's frustrating to wait, but that's the best we can do, for now.

That excerpt was highly GameDaily-esque (which in my book is a high insult to any piece of journalism).

All the companies show off sales data. Nintendo just has more that's worth showing off! That, and people are just bitter about that Nintendo is successfully selling to what they condescendingly see as "ignorant masses". The only arrogance here is from people like the writer of this article.

Also, people complaining about Iwata being a douche obviously view the industry in a vacuum and have forgotten all about Hiroshi Yamauchi. :P

"Nintendo needs to grasp that, for us, this is our super bowl, our world series, so they can't jerk us all off like they did last year."

I believe the only people here that needs to grasp anything is you whiny gamers. As someone already pointed out in this article, E3 was never for you, it was for retailers and publishers. If it was really "for the gamers", it would be an open expo that anyone can attend. Nintendo has every right to show sales figures and do long speeches at an expo for retailers and publishers, STOP CRYING.

This comment right here shows that you "hardcore" gamers have an unwarranted self importance.

@Smashchu

And I love that article, as it demonstrates just how impossible it is for Nintendo to please anyone. It's odd that Nintendo is the company that's "dying", when Sony was forced to merge Sony Computer Entertainment with their other failing divisions (a sign many see as Sony exiting the industry).

I'm calling it now: 10 years from now, when the paradigm shift can no longer be denied, we will still see angry core gamers and "games are art" people calling the system a 'fad'

I don't think they show them off to rub it in their competitors faces. Probably has to do with their stock holders.

Sony is still the king of arrogance, even if they are dead last.

Same 'hardcore' bullcrap. Oh they do indeed love Nintendo, when they are down on the ground...

Iwata is awesome, he may sound anal (although considering he doesn't really speak english how can you tell) but he is generally a modest man, a true developer and brought Nintendo back to the top in spectacular fashion. so what if he talks about sales, Nintendo is a business, that is his job, that is essentially the purpose of E3 and everyone else does it even if they aren't as justified (Sony...).

Crispygamer should take their own advice.
