June 24, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, WiiWare

Over The Top Games just dropped this into my inbox...

"Icarian: Kindred Spirits" will now be called "NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits". For important reasons, outside our control, the team at OVER THE TOP GAMES, have been forced to change the name of "Icarian: Kindred Spirits", our first game for WiiWare. After extensive deliberation we concluded that this decision was the most convenient both for our company, and for the game. This is why our game will now be called "NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits".

You have to wonder if Nintendo is the one that took issue with the title. I was just thinking about Icarian yesterday, and wondered if the Big N had an issues with the name. No matter what the reason, we now have to remember to call the game NyxQuest!

Well that kind of screws up any relation to Kid Icarus to a person who hasn't been watching the game. They say its for the better but the original name is so much better. This name will probably confuse people.

I hate crap like this. Nintendo didn't create Icarus. They were a few thousand years late on that front.

I don't think the name change had much to do with Kid Icarus. A quick Google search shows two potential issues:
1) A free browser game already out there called "Ikariam." It's not the same name, but it may be too close for comfort.

2) The Icarians were a group of French socialist utopians in the 1800s, and they had quite a few settlements in the US. Even if OTT Games was not afraid of people making a false connection, they could still be worried that the name Icarian may be considered too generic to register as a trademark.

Ironic really, a name change would be the thing to thrust me into the action of downloading it.

I'm off to check the Wii Shop now. I'll edit in about 10 minutes.

Edit: It is still there as Icarian. I don't expect it to stay like that for too long (you might remember a few months ago something siliar happened with Bang which got renamed to project bang).
Edit2: Not project Bang but Bang Attack.

They could've chosen a better name...

@OgnodoDReturns

Are you certain Nintendo is to blame for the name change? I thought so.

New name sucks.

I'd be kind of surprised if this was Nintendo's doing, to be honest. If they had a problem with the game's name, one would think that they would've put the kibbosh on it a long time ago.

That said, the game was very obviously trying to grab Nintendo fanboy attention with it's name being so similar to Kid Icarus.

Nintendo didn't like it because Kid Icarus is coming out and they didn't want people getting confused with titles. lol I wish!

The character likeness looks like it comes from 2 different things.

The female looks like Megara from the Disney Hercules

and the Male character look very similar to a super hero from Dexter's Lab, Val Hallen.

:( WTF?!!? :( This is stupid! :( The new name suck! The old name was very good! Most games names suck, but this was a good one. I hope I get the old name when I buy it, or I'll buy it and then I'll replace with with a WAD I downloaded. A correct name is important to me!
