June 29, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Rumors, DSiWare, DSi

Nintendo obviously has a little bit of a different focus on DSiWare than WiiWare. DSiWare isn't just getting games, it's getting a number of applications. Nintendo is trying to lead the way for other publishers/developers by putting out things like calculators and clocks.

If rumor is to be believed, Nintendo will also be venturing into a few more app-like areas. We are hearing that there will be programs such as DSiMaps and DSiDictionary, which I'm sure you can easily figure out what their purposes are. I think both would definitely be useful, but I don't know if they'll be a hit or not.

DSi Maps: Useless because it has no GPS functionality.

DSi Dictionary: Useless because we all have computers.

DSi Clock: Useless because we all have FREE clocks on our cell phones.

DSi Calculator: Useless because we all have FREE calculators on our cell phones.

I'd be happy with these apps if they were free, but looking at the clocks and calculators as an example, they probably won't :(

"DSi Maps: Useless because it has no GPS functionality."

... Have you ever seen a street corner? It's not hard to find your own location on a map.

"DSi Dictionary: Useless because we all have computers."

Oh, now it makes sense. You never leave your house, do you?

@Roto13

Exactly, haha.

Though I'd like if they would put out more practical applications for DSiWare... :\

I'd buy a learn Japanese or something. Not sure about the other ones like you guys (and/or girls).

Maps might be useful.

Yeah, an electronic Japanese dictionary would be a instant buy for me. This kind of devices with touch-screen kanji recognition are so expensive.
I don't mind if they makes applications: they always looks like games. Nintendo always focus on the games, and even marvellous they make a Mario clock, you have some elements of game-play.
It's true that I'm curious to see what Nintendo could bring game-play DSiWare (other than the marvellous art-style games), but the apps are interesting. But playing The Oracles of Seasons and Mother3 on my DSi would be also interesting ! :)

It would make more sense if it was always connected to the internet instead of a wi-fi hotspot.

@wiiarebrothers

Kanji Sono Mama Rakibiki Jiten was released some years ago, which has kanji recognition and japanese/english dictionary.
Actually, this app was the main reason i bought the ds in the first place, because i was learning japanese and those electronic jap dictionary are quite expensive..
...and this has games! ;)

Dsi Clock...err doesn't dsi has it's own clock system?? why need to open an additional app to look at "what time is it?". It's faster to look at the watch or cell-phone. World-Clock... maybe?(this on the go, of course!)
Sure you can make your "Animal Crossing Clock" a wonderful desktop clock!no doubt about it.

Dictionary? useful for travelling ..
Maps? also useful, but u'll find in a lot of situations praying for a wifi connection do download the maps <_<

Maybe Nintendo would think of releasing a gps add-on for the handheld... who knows! dreaming doesn't hurt anyone...
after seeing those wifi sd cards.. i believe in anything <_<

Worthless. Make better useful applications. Thanks! Though it's just a start...but it's still a weak one.

I think these are more aimed at the Japanese public, but I if they came over, I could probably get some use out of them if they were compelling enough.

I think getting aps on the DS alongside the games is a great idea.

Unless the DSi suddenly has GPS in it, the Maps thing will be pretty f***ing useless.

Dictionary, eh... I'm not opposed to it. Assuming it's a LARGE LARGE dictionary.

Reminds me of the various trademarks that were put up some time ago by Nintendo.

I don't see why Nintendo can't manage a GPS app if a third party did it on DS lite http://kotaku.com/5219117/gps-for-your-ds-lite

And yes, I know that used the GBA slot, but consider the fact that the Walk With Me pedometer is about the size of an external GPS receiver.

As far as I'm concerned the only obstacles currently would be price and battery life.

Did anyone make a PDA-type thing yet? I may be interested if they made one. :|
