Did you grow up with the cartoon you see above? A lot of people did, including myself. I loved that series, and have a great respect for it to this day. With so many fans familiar with 'The Real Ghostbusters' cartoon series, why weren't these characters used in the Wii version of the latest Ghostbusters game? ToyFare magazine talks to Creative Director Drew Haworth of Terminal Reality to get the answer.
TF: Did you draw any inspiration from The Real Ghostbusters animated series?
DH: We avoided reference to any of the animated series. This isn't a reflection of their quality, but because the animated series isn't actually considered canon, and everyone from Sony to the original creators to us didn't want to create any confusion by blending them.
Well, I definitely understand the reasoning, but I don't have to enjoy it! At least we know that we'll probably never see those characters again. I think I'm going to cry!

It's VERY, VERY, VERY, 80's outdated.

Perhaps, but definitely iconic, and part of the lore, canon or not.
The series did influence GB2 a lot, and even the game, with Slimer now "canon" as a pet. It did it's part.
I wish they had gotten Sony's approval to at least add the multi-colored jumpsuits.
The Real Ghostbusters would have made it a must-buy for me. I understand that they were trying to make it distinct, but the result ends up feeling generic actually. I actually felt led on by some previews that said the Wii-version felt like The Real Ghostbusters, clearly it does not.
Picking up the PS3 version instead.
the graphics are dopey but the controls are awesome and the game is great. I was tempted to buy the PS3 version when it goes down in price because the graphics are so nice, but to me the controls would be a major step down
and it is cannon, set between the movies. Hell, even if not officially (im sure ive read dan and harold talking about how its involved) ghostbusters wouldnt have been as popular if it wasnt for the cartoon. Many of the current fans grew up watching the cartoons along with the movies. hell, the 2nd movie changed its style to reflect the cartoon.

Anyway, I still remember that one episode with the big blue headed Boogieman. It was one of most interesting episodes, and it's been branded to my mind to this day.
