ENDOFDAYTHOUGHTS 01

Turns out that I had internet upgrade issues, as well as a dead router...all in one day! How's that for some crappy luck? Now, before I head to bed...I get to go to Walmart and grab a new router. What a great way to start/end the day! See you guys in a few, short hours.

While I was out for Mom Brain's birthday bash, I had the chance to see someone that I don't often talk to. This guy is a gamer...one that I would call 'hardcore' without batting an eyelash. I know he plays a ton of games, and owns all the current gen consoles and portables. I figured that he would be quite up on what's going on for all the systems, but surprisingly enough, he wasn't too up-to-date on the Wii.

We first talked about The Conduit, which he was already aware of. While he knew of the game, he didn't know about the reviews or anything like that. He also didn't know what to expect from the online play. High Voltage has gone out of their way to create an online experience unlike any other on Wii, and many are realizing that they've gone above and beyond in creating that online arena. Unfortunately, too many people have no faith in the Wii when it comes to online. When support is minor at best, and Friend Codes are an issue, why would anyone bother playing a Wii game online when they could have a much easier experience on PS3 or 360?

We moved on from there to discussing Overlord. I happened to know that this guy was a big Overlord player. I caught him playing the original a few times in the past. I knew he'd be getting the sequel, and that he did. While he wasn't too happy with Overlord 2, he said he didn't purchase Overlord: Dark Legend. Why is that, you ask? Well, he thought the game was a port of the first one. Once again, this shows you just how little information gets out there on the Wii versions of games. When I told this guy that Overlord: Dark Legend was a brand-new, Wii-exclusive game...he was a bit floored.

How do we go about combating situations like these? I think it comes down to the gaming press, and its coverage of Nintendo platforms. The Wii and DS may be the biggest sellers in this generation, but the coverage of their games pales in comparison to 360/PS3/PSP. Many outlets just don't devote as much coverage to games on Nintendo platforms because they believe there's not much interest in them. We have to start proving that that isn't the case.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love running GoNintendo, and bringing Nintendo-specific news to the web. I just wish that the overall coverage of Nintendo platforms was a bit more widespread.

Good question RMC, and like you, I'm not sure I have an answer. One thing I will say is: the stereotypical "hardcore" gamer isn't going to even know The Conduit exists. We're probably among the few who own multiple consoles and bought it. And I'll admit if I only had a 360/PS3, I wouldn't go out of my way to look up news on Wii games. My friends are big into things like Halo, CoD, and GH, but have never heard of The Conduit. I feel like that's the case with a lot of gamers, especially with Wii since so many games are released on it.

Another thing is: I can't remember the last time a Nintendo game was on the cover of a magazine. 360/PS3 games seem to get all the spotlight. More pages in magazines, more coverage, etc.. like you said.

Sad but true.

I hope Nintendo gets better coverage in the future.

I know some people online who has never heard of The Conduit til I told them about it and they're gamers too. And this was as recent as a few weeks ago.

This is a mentality that really annoys me: when Wii owners feel it's their job to band together and "support" Nintendo by purchasing games that they don't want just because they wanna "support the developer" or when they feel that they have to "do their part" to "spread the word" about Wii.

It's one thing to recommend a game to your friends, it's another to go on a crusade for a faceless company just because you're so loyal. Nintendo is a big boy, they can market their games if they feel it's necessary.

I don't know when the Wii hate became more aggressive, but I think the behavior you mentioned is a knee-jerk reaction of the fan to Nintendo detractors, who continuously bash the console even if there are "games"
that exist within it.

@thisboywillbreak
Until Nintendo makes a hi-res game that can output good large screenshots, I doubt we'll ever see the day until next gen.

I think that this generation just really shows the true colors of the gaming "press" (I use that term very loosely).

This is the first generation that I can think of where the #1 selling console received less coverage than the runners-up.

Last generation, Sony's console received far greater coverage than the competition because it was by far the #1 selling console.

This generation, Sony's console is still receiving far greater coverage even though it lags is 3rd place and the Wii is on a faster selling trend than the PS2.

Apparently the gaming "press" is more interested in shilling for Sony and MS than actually giving fair coverage to the systems that deserve it.

Working at gamestop and owning all three systems, I'm constantly trying to get people to buy wii games. I have successfully sold 7 copies of the conduit, 3 madworlds, and 2 deadly creatures.
I find it hilarious when we are slow and a customer comes in to talk smack about the wii, only to find a devout nintendo fan. they are suddenly in shock that I have answers to all of his complaints and ridicules. I love it. But I try to get people excited for the wii games. Don't get me wrong. I do love my 360 and my ps3 makes a great movie player... and little big planet....
Nintendo just is unrivaled with characters, game play, and originality.

It's stupid how far people will go to show unjustified hatred for a game system out of fanboyism.

Yeah okay I'll stop playing No More Heroes and Castle Shikigami III because Wii sucks and only has casual games. Thank you for informing me of my error, general internet public.

Are you dumb?
Do you look at a magazine cover like this:

and go "Wow that's an awesome screen shot"
when half the time it's art?
Lmfao.

Many people don't know about the Wii's 3rd-party games because most of the good ones are niche titles. Why buy the Conduit if you have a PS3 or 360? The 1st-parties are well known because they've been around since the beginning.

It is unfortuante but I must say it.

It is simple really.

Most "CORE" gamers do not see Nintendo platforms as hardcore gaming systems.(You can't tell me am wrong because I know its true)

Although all 3 systems are gaming consoles..there is an actual DIVISION in the gaming poulation among MANY(not saying ALL) people when it comes to Nintendo platfroms as opposed to other platforms.

Nintendo for alot of people = Kiddy, kiddy games and with the advent of Wii and DS party games ONLY or minigames systems ONLY.

No serious games or core games.
Thus the mass belief is you want core games you want the "best experience" and all that.

What games are they going to buy...360, PS3 and PSP.

It is very simple really.
One example is GTA Chinatown Wars on PSP. DS version didn't sell well(long legs eh)

Watch as the PSP version sells like hotcakes right out from the gates and then continues to sell like the DS version is selling now..in the end it will sell more which is the point.

As for the coverage of Nintendo platfroms...nobody cares do they?

There is no gears of war, resistance fall of man, Cod4,Cod5 and halo, Mass Effect and God of War on Wii...

THe list goes on...

I bet right now people are plying 360/PS3 games...infamous,Prototype..

Wii? heh

A lot of people don't want anything to do with the Wii, regardless of how much press cover it gets.

Now in the case of this guy, who supposedly owns all current consoles and is a hardcore gamer, 2008 was a good year to become detached of the Wii with what the other consoles had to offer.

But overall I also think that Wii games need more coverage, especially 3rd party titles that inspite of how good or how much effort devs. put into them, one hardly ever sees as much as a screen shot in few magazines.

Umm... Guys... you DO realize that a lot of the gaming press is pretty corrupted. MS and Sony are constantly paying off mags and sites to give good reviews and huge coverage to their platforms.

Nintendo doesn't play that game.

MS and Sony are still sweating from the severe beating they took this gen and pulling all the dirty stops to try and change it (dont get me wrong, I have and like my PS3).

What really kills me:
the people whining about Nintendo's treatment from third parties and gaming press are the same people who then turn around and say, "Here, third parties.. take my monies for this high-effort PS360 game. Thank you for shunning Nintendo yet again."

Hypocrites.

When you financially starve the third-party and press snobs, you begin to address the real problem. Until then, get used to this status quo: main course for other consoles, table scraps for Nintendo consoles.

Well, it's funny because members of the so called "core gamer" base tend to be just as clueless as the casual players they're discriminate against. You still have members now and again who don't realize that FRIEND codes are for exactly that, friends, they think that you can't play a game online at all unless you have a FC with everyone you want to play. That may be true with a couple of games (namely Animal Crossing), but the grand majority of online titles on DS or Wii allow for matchmaking or gameplay with randomly chosen opponents who are connected.

It really kills me when people still trumpet up the shovelware excuse/complaint when there are and have been viable games out there to try for Wii. To me, if you spend most of your Wii talk complaining about a low effort product you wouldn't buy anyway versus talking up a potenetially great upcoming or currently released title you actually would pick up... something is wrong.

Im sick of how the press treats Nintendo. Its been happening since the Genesis days and journalists have come up with nothing new to bash them. Its all the same "its for kiddies" argument that we've all heard before. And still Nintendo has managed to make it through it all. Innovation and word of mouth goes a long way.

this post is 100% correct!!

hmmm, I wonder if I've made a website entirely devoted to combating this sad phenomenon....

I have!! >>> www.wiiaredeep.tk

I don't mean to "advertise," but I want to get a truly "flame-free" community going over there and we neeeed active people on the forums.

the whole point was to show that Wii gamers are passionate, but I'm having a hard time getting a community to thrive there as an illustration!

please join our cause!!

Congratz, you just made me want to never visit that site.
Also .tk

No thanks.

But in all honesty, just be straight up and advertise dude.
You're doing it in the right place as the audience is here,
but there's a time and a specific place,
and this seems like a silly place to do so.
Try the forums?

Using proper grammar and punctuation also helps btw.

What's funny is that there is many retro-gamers on Nintendo platforms. People who have played the NES back i the days (I wasn't born yet, even if I have a nes now), people who played earthbound, people who played the first Megaman, etc... These people know what a game is, well, more than some who discover games with über stylish games like DMC or GoW.

judging from your posts in this very article, you won't be missed.

and if you wanna pay the monthly fees for me to get a .com then I'll go register one.

PM me on the forums and I'll let you know where to send the monthly checks =P

lastly, it just goes to show you the extreme challenge in making the kind of changes RMC is talking about.
I work very hard to create something which, I hope, can help bring gamers back together - and your first reaction is to try and discredit me because of puncuation, "netiquette," and domain cost?

try to focus on the bigger picture.

*sigh*...it's an uphill battle, indeed.

Don't listen to these people... there's nothing wrong in trying to promote your cause in any way you can.

There are a lot of people who only post on GoNintendo's main page and don't visit the forums so there is a high chance of getting more people if you do so on both.

Rail-shooters don't tend to fire up the charts for Wii owners. No coverage for that reason alone in mainstream media.

IGN are also very obnoxious when it comes to marketing, glad to see they failed with MadWorld.

I've tried posting in the forums about the site. since GoNintendo people are awesome (zero, zero sarcasm, seriously, they are freakin' the best!) they very POLITELY took down my post and PMed me to POLITELY tell me advertising was frowned upon.

so, I just thought I'd drop a line here since this EODThoughts is exactly in line with my site's purpose.

As I said before, user base means nothing.

The gaming sites and magazines work for their readers and consumers. Even if the Wii have the biggest installed base worldwide, if thejaority of readers of don't want to know s*** about the console, is just fair to give priority to them. If they get more mails asking for ps3 or 360 information than Wii information, is obvious that they will adhere with the majority of their feedback.

And at any rate, there are enough sites like this very one to balance things, so in all honestly, if the informations doesn't reach people, is simply because they are not enough interested...and the ammount of coverage is not an issue...that guy in the EOD for example, what did he needed to learn that Overlord Wii wasn't a port? reviews, previews and interviews made it clear, you are going to tell me than more reviews, previews and interviews would have changed that? if he didn't read one, I don't see why he would potentially read the other hundred articles.

i don't think it's the gaming press at all, they cover what is BIG, just because something is big for nintendo and nintendo fans, doesn't mean it's BIG overall.

i know that sounds bad, but why should wii resort get as much coverage as ODST?
