July 2, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii

Well, it was certainly a tough call. The fans and the team had a lot of affection for the setting and characters of the first Red Steel, and it was certainly tempting to pick up where the first game left off. However, as we developed our gameplay and art style for Red Steel 2, it became clear that what we were doing would work much better in a new setting: a setting that was built around this new type of combat we had built, and a setting that better fit what we wanted to do with the game visually. So, we took a good hard look at what was really cool about the first Red Steel (guided by a mix of our own gaming tastes and our quite passionate feedback from the fanbase). From this, it became clear that the strong Asian-style setting and the mix of modern action gun combat plus katana-based sword fighting is something that resonates with a lot of people, us included, but that there was room to take the franchise in a new direction while still keeping that “Red Steel” core. So, we started there. Then, we began to build what would become an entirely new world, story, characters, and visual style around those core concepts. What you see is the result. - Jason Vandenberghe, Creative Director

This is just one of a barrage of questions that Mr. Vandenberghe has answered concerning Red Steel 2. I highly recommend that you read the entire forum interview at the link below, as it seems that Ubisoft is going out of their way to get some back-and-forth going between the dev team and consumers.

Check out the interview here (thanks Chema64!)

I actually like the first one despite the frustrating controls for sword fighting. Unfortunately this one looks to me like a complete departure; they're just using the name to sell it.

@Fernando

Think of it as Final Fantasy. There's no continuity there and nobody complains

Not to say that the first game wasn't good but this one will be much better based on what we've been shown so far, mainly due to the extreme changes.

"it became clear that what we were doing would work much better in a new setting"

Why does that sound alot like what Ubisoft said about Rayman 4 being better when they changed the idea to Raving Rabbids?

@MasterTech

Idk...I actually like the original's emphasis on guns and the style of it. I don't see why they couldn't make a true sequal to the original AND do this "The Swordsman" spin-off.

@nGen

Exactly. Heck, and when they did make a direct sequel, most people hated it (referring to X-2).

"(in reference to the intro scene) We love making these – as long as they are amazingly cool, we’ll put as many of them in the game as we can manage to build. Try and stop us!"

I love this guy.

Because the first game was a giant, steaming turd and Ubisoft wants to distance itself from it as much as possible?

I didn't hate the first game(it was one of my first two launch games after all) but this one is looking much better, and I support all the decisions they've made so far. . .except lack of multiplayer, but I'm hoping the single player will make up for it.

Tbh, I much prefer the whole Yakuza setting instead of the western. I really don't care about westerns at all.

@Golbez

Then why would they call it red steel 2? That's about as much distance as exists between your nose and face.

@Wiilanadapter

Probably because the first one sold well and they want to show the average consumer the sequal thinking it'll sale the same amount or more.

@Wiilanadapter

Because at it's core the game's setting is still the same. It's about american / japanese culture combined into one game.

I think the drastic changes were the best move. It feels fresh and will draw interest from people that didn't like Red Steel 1. For those that did like it, the name and core gameplay concept remain.

The first one was a steaming pile of poo, in my opinion.

They were in need of a reboot. New location, new style, new story...

Without it, they can't shake the negative connections people will have made with the Red Steel brand. They need to show that they aren't making a shoddy sequel to a shoddy game.

Then why the heck call it red steel 2? That makes no sense. just give the ip a new name. I hate buying "2"s without buying "1"s and I will not buy this "1". Oh well, guess i'll learn to live with it or just not buy it.

While I haven't actually played the original Red Steel, from what I've seen I like Red Steel 2's setting, graphical style, and overall theme much more.
